Hungry & Nauseas at the same time after exercise

Let me first say thank you for your help – This is my first post so please be easy on me.

I’ll ask my question first and then try to explain and give you some background.

After I exercise in the heat, currently 100 degrees, I feel hungry, nauseas, have a headache, and have LOTS of gas that if I don’t burp it away I’m afraid I would through up. This feeling usually lasts 3-5 hours.

It seems strange to be hungry and nauseas at the same time but it seems that the only thing that makes the nausea go away is to eat and drink.
I know some of these sound like heat exhaustion but I feel alright until I stop exercising and start cooling down.

Currently my cardio is done by bike riding. I usually try to ride 1 to 1 ½ hours and keep my heart rate at 150-160.

I am 35 years old and trying to get in shape for an upcoming hike that’s 16.4 miles with and elevation gain of 5000 feet. I live at sea level and only have 7 weeks so I’m trying to train pretty hard. I hike with 40 lbs, bike, stair stepper, total gym . . .

I try to drink plenty but I only drink water because I’m on a low carb diet and don’t want the sugar in the sports drinks. I have always consumed LOTS of salt, would think that might help here but. . . it's not.

I don’t know what else you might need to know. Thanks for taking the time to read this and try to help me figure out what is going on so I can keep training hard.

I dont really know but heres my stab...

A low carb diet ? why is that.

i see your hungry and feeling nasae, maybe this is a sign by your body that your not having enough glucose in your diet, -> for your brain.

Its all fine when your not exercising because your body can make glucose from other things like protein. But when your exercising the amount needed may not be sufficient. Or have you been drinking alcohol because this inhibits cofactors that are required to produce energy.

probably wrong but just a stab haha, maybe see a gp or something :S

Oh and by the way where is the event, 5000 feet woahh. Maybe it would have been good if you had the chance to train in that altitude so as to increase your hematocrit. Its gonna be touch, ecspecially if your versing people who live in that altitude.

matt182,

Thanks for your help - It gives me something to think about and research.

"Why low carb" - About 3 years ago I was 80lbs overweight. I went on the Atkins and lost 65 lbs - I decided I was good at 195 rather than what the books say I should weigh. I am comfortable eating that way and find it easier to maintain than most things. I never really exercised then other than playing tennis from time to time. Certainly not like I'm doing now.

No alcohol - most find it strange but I've never drank. Never been a temptation and it always smelled bad to me.

It's not really a competition just a hike with friends but I guess it will be competitive because I don't want to get shown up.

Thanks again for your ideas.
Matt
