How to strenghten lower back?

Just basically looking for some exercises to make my lower back stronger as i sometimes get pain in that area..

thanks if anyone can help out

Maybe you should see your doctor first to find the cause of the pain, that'll affect the way you treat it.

I had lower back pain for years but my doctor told me there was no actual problem; I just had weak back muscles. The only thing that worked for me was deadlifting, I'm pain free in my back now for the first time in years

Yeah you should get it sorted out with a physio or something.

More likely due to weak anterolateral muscles (can type that in google) thats causing the pain..

ah i don't think i need to see a doctor... it's not that bad and i don't get it always i just know that my lower back isn't particularly strong.

so if i perform dumbbell deadlifts should i be using heavy weights to allow me to only do 8-12 weigths or will this just strain the muscles?

or should i use lighter weigths and do higher reps?

I'd never go over 10 reps for deads because I think form starts to suffer if the reps get too high and deadlifting with poor form will do your back more harm than good.

Personally I think deads are most effective when performed in the 1-3 rep range

To only make it to 3 reps would require me use quite heavy weights.... won't i damage my back?

Not with correct form you shouldn't. Maybe try dropping the number of reps every now and again and ease yourself into low rep deads if that'd make you feel more comfortable

thanks for the advice...

one thing: does a seated shoulder press with no back support put strain on the lower back? it sure feels like it

Yes, usually because of overarching. Keeping the abs pulled in and the glutes tight can help with this, but ultimately you just have to watch your form.
