How often do you buy clothes?

So, I'm swimming in my clothes, but I'm also losing weight fairly quickly. I was in in 18s when I started. I'm now in loose 14s. I have ONE pair of size 14 pants. They were a gift from my aunt, and sadly, they aren't work-appropriate. Everything else I own hangs off me.

I swore I wouldn't buy anything until I was down to a size 12. But I look ridiculous in all but one pair of my work-related pants. Since all my pants are so big, I'm belting them. I have to wear them way up high and cinch the waist in. And once that's done, the front puckers really badly. And then the puckering causes the top part to stick out in a point. It looks really stupid. My tops sort of cover this unsighly area, but the fabric on the pants still protrudes.

I guess I'm just too much of a cheapskate to buy clothes each time I drop a size. It doesn't make sense to me.

What do you do? How often do you buy new clothes when you are in the midst of losing a lot of fat and many dress sizes?

I would invest in the basics like a black/blue/grey pant or a skirt which you can pair up with almost all color tops and of course a pair of jeans to wear on the weekend. When you wear clothes that fit it would motivate you even more to get to your goal. Wearing clothes that fit make a big difference in your confidence and also helps you feel good about yourself and provides tons of motivation. Atleast with me when I see myself in smaller clothes I feel good about myself and this then makes me want to stick to what I have been doing and get to the final goal I want.

I was a size 16 and then did not buy much until I reached a size 10 as I could no longer wear what I was wearing; I remember the first day I wore size 10 and went to work people started to give me loads of compliments; the most wonderful thing it did was it kept me going and now I wear a size 6.

I feel better about myself if my clothes fit properly - find a tailor in your area and have your clothes altered or visit good will, thrift shops, marshalls, tjmaxx, whatever and find youurself a few outfits.

I've lost about 10 - 12 sizes now... and have replaced the wardrobe basics about 4 times already - and while I am cheap, I have been passing on the clothes I cant wear anymore to people who need them -makes me feel a little good to help someone out..

In the past when I lost weight I wouldn't buy new clothes. The big clothes fit weird and made me feel uncomfortable. This time around I am buying new clothes and it is doing great things for my self-esteem. When I walk outside I know I look good and then it makes me want to lose more. I buy at Target or Walmart and find really good sales. It just makes me feel better to wear the size I am.

Secondhand store all the way baby! I love mine, I go in once or twice a month and have found quite a few like-new jeans for $2-3.

Not very often, unfortunately for me, school and food and bills use up more then I can afford. I'm in a negative income right now.

When I was on a roll back a lonnnnnnnnng time ago lol I would hit the 2nd hand store and buy the next size down on 1/2 off days so a for a nice pair of jeans name brand to would only cost me $3.50 and I would get 2-4 pairs also shirts were $2.50 so affortable and my sis N law hooked me up with 16's-22's when I 1st started out and she had gastric done. But every month N 1/2 or so I would need new clothes.Tammy

I shopped Ebay, thrift and resale shops to replace my clothes while losing weight. I started a year ago at a size 12 and now I'm a size 2. I donated all the clothes to Goodwill every time I dropped a size.

I finally started shopping online at the Gap and Banana Republic now that I'm at my goal size.

Congrats on your weight loss :)

I was wearing 20s when I started and now my 18s are falling off of me. So what I'm trying wear a belt and just deal until I lose enough weight so I can buy clothes to actually wear for a while. I may not look so fabulous but it's for something better anyway.

This is my solution too. I just look through the clearance rack for stuff to get me by. Actually I was there last night to grab a pair of jeans, snagged pair if Levi's for $9.50.

Aren't we all losing weight to look better(and better health)? Don't go ruin all your hard work buying walmart clothes that make you look like crap!

Some of us don't have money to buy better clothing. I'm stuck with a whole lot of clothing that is WAY to big for me, I can't do anything about it.

Well try harder. Im in college and maintain a 3.5 average and work at best buy as a manager for about 35-40 hours a week.

freecycle.org (a mailing l ist b, craigslist, thrift shops, second hand stores, consignment shops, sale racks, sale racks, sale racks...

I know I feel a bit b etter about myself when my clothes fit and I'm not constantly adjustig them or having them pooch out on me...

New to you is just as good as new..

Most dry cleaners also have tailors that it might be worth checking into paying a few dollars to have clothes that you like taken in...

lol who says Walmart will make anyone look bad? Yeah they do sell some iffy stuff there but they also have some nice stuff. I tend to avoid their house brand and stuff that looks cheap in favor of Levi Straus, Dickies and Wrangler stuff, which is what I wear even when I'm thin.

I buy plenty of stuff at the cheap stores, then again I am clothing 3 people. I dont buy a heck of a lot at Kmart but I love Target, which I think is a bit more upmarket than the US Target?

anyway I have a suitcase full of clothes under my bed, some things are so tiny I just hold them up and shake my head - my 15 year old daughter would be to big for them, and shes tall and slim! These clothes are only 6 years old when I lost 36 kg and was fit as could be. I want to get back there! But in the meantime, Ive kept some of the clothes I loved, and HOPEFULLY this site will help me wear them again! In the short term I am buying minimal cos I want to start shrinking, lots of cheap colours for summer and no major purchases. My dream is to be able to buy an expensive suit for work which looks fabulous!

Inexpensive doesnt neccessarily mean cheap... The Tar-jay's in OZ are quite similar to the ones here... better than Kmart but not quite a department store... Some ofthe clothes are nice looking...

The store I discovered recently - that I actually have found some stuff I like in, and was suprised that I did was H&M - I figured that it would be too young, too trendy and not my style - not that I have a real style -- but it's really not -there's some stuff that's atrocious but other stuff is pretty good at good prices... Tim Gunn described them as the Ikea of the clothing world -and I'd agree :D

Yeah, basically I went to Khols and TJ Max and Marshalls. I bought three new pairs of pants but will exchange one pair for a size smaller.

Mal: I know you've lost a ton of weight. Do you mind telling me your size? I've never really been able to fit into clothes found at normal stores unless those stores carried larger sizes. I doubt I could fit into H&M stuff. I thought those clothes were geared more toward people who have narrow frames. I'm in 14s now, loose 14s, but I'm wicked rumpy. I totally like the trendy crap they have at H&M, but since I've never been able to wear most of it, that store isn't really on my radar.
