I get about 7.5 hours each night... Fewer than 6, or more than 9 and I feel like crap!

Buckey Fuller used "Dymaxion Sleep," which is a polyphasic style of sleeping (as opposed to one 8-hour sleep session), in-which you sleep for 30 minutes every 6 hours. In this way, you only sleep for 2 hours each day!

Steve Fossett (one of my heroes) used polyphasic sleeping when he flew around the world... He only napped in 5-minute intervals!

I am fascinated with this stuff as well, because I feel as though we literally sleep away 1/3 or more of our lives!!!

I have often wondered if weight lifting and polyphasic sleep would mix... I have never been able to find a study, or more information in this area, but I know that our military has been secretly studying this stuff for ages.

I assume you know to be getting enough zinc and magnesium, and maybe some melatonin if that helps.

There used to be a Zinc/Magnesium supplement called ZMA that I took for a while and slept like a baby. I am lucky to get 7 good hours of sleep now though. I seem to get up every few hours to pee or as of now blow my nose. I saw a few bottels of zinc and magnesium at the local big lots. I may go pick a few up and try taking them a hour before I go to bed. Of course in the summer when I am not teaching I get over 8 hours pretty easy. Right now I get up for work at 6:00 and don't get home from work till 6:00. Its hard to try to fit 8 hours in between that with everything else going on

about 6 - 8 hours but i never have a night where my sleep is uninterrupted. I always wake up in the middle of my sleep, which is really annoying. I remember the last time i went a full night with no interruptions, the last time i looked at my clock before falling asleep it was 12am on the button and when i woke up it was 10am on the button...10 hours of solid uninterrupted sleep - needless to say i felt pretty good darn good when i woke up, which is extremely rare for me....That was probably about 2 years ago now.

I also though can go to sleep anytime I feel like it. I have a form of narcolepsy where i pretty much slip into the phase of sleep where you dream right after I fall asleep. I also can be asleep within 10 minutes whenever I feel like it even if I just woke up or feel completely wired.

How'd you get that diagnosis? Also, WTF. We've got a lot in common.

I've been trying to set myself up with a 10pm - 4am sleep schedule but I always feel like I'm wasting time. I understand sleeping isn't a waste and I probably should do it more, but today it was about 11:30pm - 3am and now I'm awake.

I don't know about secret studies, but I was definitely sleep deprived in the Army. Less then three hours a day for weeks at a time... My commander's motto: "sleep is for the dead, you'll get plently of it then." Ah, good times!

I absolutely hate my sleep pattern. If I could ask for one thing that might be it.

Weeknights-Sunday night to Thursday night-up at 7 for school
apx 4-5 hours of sleep. 5 on an awesome night, 4-80% of the time

Friday night-up at 6 for wrestling on Saturday
apx 6 hours of sleep

Saturday night-nothing to wake up for on Sunday
anywhere from 8 hours to 10 hours...this is an amazing sleep night for me

I have a terrible time getting to sleep. sometimes I can feel tired, go to bed, then lay there for sometimes 3 hours...it is very rare for me to go to bed and NOT have to lay there for at least an hour before falling asleep.
I just started taking Melatonin. I used to use ZMA on LV's recommendation, but that left me drowsy in the morning if I got my normal amount of sleep. I just started taking Melatonin Saturday night, so hopefully it won't effect me too much if I don't get 8 hours of sleep. I'm working on it though....

I usually get around 7 hours of sleep. We recently got a new mattress set and the quality of my sleep has improved greatly. I used to toss and turn, wake up numerous times etc. but now I sleep extremely well. 7 hours, maybe a tad bit longer and I'm set for the next day.

I used to be an insomniac but nowadays I just go through periods of insomnia where I get 1-3 hours sleep. I need 9 hours sleep per night and have been getting that recently bar this week where i have been getting 1-3 hours sleep. Without 9 hours sleep I find it hard to communicate comfortably with people and with less than 6 hours sleep; I get ill and can't really do anything. Sleep is the most important thing of my life because without it I can't have a good life. Like karky, I often can't switch off no matter how tired I am. However lately bar the last week my sleep has drastically improved :)

Two nights on ZMA now and I'm noticing a difference. Better sleep and actually falling asleep sooner. I'm also going to take up the habbit of reading some books on the curriculum, or, as I'm gonna do tonight, read some critical essays on Wuthering Heights. If that doesn't put you to sleep, nothing will.

As I said earlier, Karks, reading is a great way to get in touch with when your body is telling you that you're sleepy. A lot of people overshoot it because they're distracted by louder activities like watching movies or listening to amped up music. But when you're reading and you start to lose your ability to focus, you're probably at the point where you can and should fall asleep within 15 minutes of getting into bed.

Problem with textbooks, though, is they make some people fall asleep regardless. ;)
