How long to wait after running before hitting the gym?

I was thinking about running (3-4 miles) sometime in the afternoon at around 5 or 5:30 PM and going to the gym at around 10 PM and doing my usual routine (about 12 sets, each 10-12 reps) for whatever muscle group im doing. Is that affective? I hear you shouldn't do too much cardio if your going to lift later since that weakens your body and you don't have as much energy to pump into your muscles when you do hit the gym. In addition, about how long should I rest in between running and lifting?

Depends on your goals. If you are looking for strength and/or size gains you need to run after you lift or on completely seperate days. If cardio fitness is your goal then it is only a matter of how long before you recover enough to lift.
 
I dont know of any rule here.....

But I often run to and from the gym to ensure I hit my required cardio. Beats the snot out of running on the damn treadmill. I am entirely to ADD for that piece of equipment.
