How good is swimming for weight loss

Hi im 21 and i have to lose 3 stone i have been going to the gym the last month and feel i have deffo lost weight but i havent lost anything according to the scales i think i may have been doing too much weight training and not enough cardio.

my plan is to go swimming for 40 mins in the morning and the cross trainer for 50 mins at lunch time, would this be a good combination along with sensible eating for me to achieve weight loss or should i stik to full body weights also.

any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

you don't need to do 1.5hrs cardio every day. the best way to lose weight is a combination of cardio and weights - with eating well being extremely important. there are several ways you could do it. one is weight training 3 times a week and cardio on a different 3 days with one rest day.

if you've been going to the gym for a month and not lost any fat then i'd suggest having a look at your diet. it may be that you've lost a bit of fat and gained a bit of muscle tho. try taking measurements of your waist each month instead of relying on the scales.

Thanks

Ok i just didnt want to keep on with weight training as i thought this would add weight by toning when i want to lose weight.

So if you rekon i should do 3 days of each how long each day should i do it for.As i try to fit it in before work and on my lunch break so i can do 40 mins in morning and 40 mins at lunch.

Would that be enough time to achieve good results.

I was planning to go swimming every morning and at lunch one day of weights then next day cardio and vice versa but is doing weights good for losing weight ?

your help is appreciated

Thanks again

Personally I have found swimming to be very good for weight loss, as well as improving CV fitness a good deal.

Personally I swim a mile, fasted, 6 mornings a week in the 40-45 minute bracket. Not a scintillating pace, but if I pushed it whilst fasted I'd probably pass out and drown :D

I also lift on Tuesday, Thursday and a big leg day on Saturday (hence no swimming on Sundays!!).

I wouldn't even dream of doing another cardio session. Patience is just as important in weight loss as diet. If you get your diet clean and your workout right, you will start to see the results you want.

weight training is excellent for losing weight. i've no idea about the science behind it but i have read that weight training will boost your metabolism for pretty much the full day. regardless of that tho, i have read and heard time and time again from people trying to lose weight and doing masses of cardio and not getting the results they would have liked. they then start weight training and the weight comes off much easier. in addition to that, for every pound of muscle you gain you will burn an extra 50 calories per day.

if you want to do the swimming every morning that'd be good and then maybe mon, wed, fri lunch times a weights session. a full body workout would maybe be best for you as you begin. have a read of this: total body training and this: 10x3 for fat loss. you should be able to fit 4/5/6 exercises into your 40 minutes.

also, weight training will add weight. you will gain a small amount of muscle. but i'm assuming when you say you want to lose weight, you mean fat?

hi yes thanks i want to lose fat ie- i want to look slimmer and not have a belly and a big bottom i just wasnt sure by doing weights will this actualy help me lose the belly and bottom or should i just stick to cardio to slim down.

What do you think, to me i just want to look slimmer

Thanks

weight training combined with cardio will give good results! you can do fullbody 3 times a week and cardio on your resting days.

The "science" behind the weight lifting, as far as i know.. is that when you lift weights you damage your muscles way more than when you do cardio. The hormoes the body sends out to repair those muscles burns cals ;)
This is also the reason why HIIT is superior to low intensity cardio, because with HIIT you need more hormones to recover, thus a greater ammount of cals are burned. remember, its not just what you burn during the exersice, but after too! ;)
