How fast is too fast???

Ok so I'm thrilled but also a little taken aback by what the scale had to tell me this morning.

History, A portion eater....was eating waaayyy too much. 3-4 extra large meals a day - next to no physical activity.

Current, Small to normal sized portions have been to the gym 3 out of 4 days this week for 1.5-2hr/visit. Drinking lots of water.

Weighed myself 7 times 4 days ago....aghast and had to repeat to see if it was right!! Weighed myself today....3 days earlier than I said I would to see if there was any change....vowed not to beat myself up if there was no change yet....elated to see that I'm 8lbs down in 4 days....

I know that weight usually comes off quicker in the beginning and those who lose it slower have a better chance of keeping it off but I don't think that I'm doing anything outside of what I can manage as a permanent change....I guess what I'm looking for is for someone else to tell me this is ok.....

You're fine. That much loss so fast right at the beginning is going to be almost all water weight. You will not continue to lose 8 pounds every 4 days. :)

Once you're a couple weeks in, you ought to be seeing losses averaging around 1% of body weight or so.

Oh, and just in case it happens to you: if you don't lose anything in the next week or two, just hang in there. A big loss week followed by a couple weeks of nothing is normal for lots of people.

While I realize that I'm sweating it out at the gym...I'm drinking 3 liters a day..I don't really understand water weight loss if I'm better hydrated now....

I'm not challenging that you're right...I just don't get it....

If you're dehydrated, your body retains water to maintain the right electrolyte concentrations. If you're adequately hydrated, excess electrolytes get flushed out, and you don't need as much water in your body. Or something like that. There are other factors that influence how much water your body holds on to, some of which are affected by change in diet and exercise, some of which aren't.

In any case, I can assure you that you did not burn 28,000 more calories than you consumed in the last 4 days, and so did not lose 8 pounds of fat. The colloquial expression for getting a lower reading on the scale in the absence of a sufficient caloric deficit is "I lost a bunch of weight, but it was all water weight." :)

I guess there's a lot I don't know about the science of it all....none the less I'm still glad to see 8lbs down....all I can do is keep up what I'm doing and take the small rewards of each day!

lol make the most of the 8lb losses, i think i lost in the range of 30lb in the first 2 weeks. Now im down too like 1lb every 2 weeks! lol.

I could totally take anywhere in the range of 30 in the first couple of weeks....I would even settle for 25 in the first 3!! (trip to California in 3wks!!)

I'm still proud of my 8lbs regardless of what it was...8lbs is way more than the big fat 0 lost or 3 gained trend that I've seen for months!!

Ok but huge props to you wishes for an amazing job! I'm here on the forum because of people like you and the help and inspiration you provide! :hurray:

im glad i inspire you, inspiration is all good. it gives you goals and all that garbage.

I think i need to hide the cookies however because i just cant stop eating the darned things :O

when I was losing all my weight last year I tried to make sure I didn't lose more than 10 pounds a month. In an effort to try and preserve muscle mass and not end up skinny and puny, but rather skinny and buff.

It worked good, though I should've lost weight even SLOWER because it would have lessened even more how much muscle mass I would have lost. I lost like 65 pounds and like 45 was fat. but it really sucks about the 20 pounds of muscle I lost. Workin on getting it back now while retaining bodyfat.
