Honey I shrunk the belly…

OK, I’ve never been one to look to others for help but this looks like fun!

A little back ground:
I’m 34 year old male
6’0” 325lbs
Married to the love of my life for14 years now (yes I know we were young)
Have the two best kids ever created one boy (11) on girl (9)

I was always a very athletic as a kid and a young adult. I put on 15lbs to play collage football, went from 215-218 to 230-235 now 13 years later I’m 325 lbs (I guess I found something I was good at and kept with it). I’ve always had body image issues, even at 215lbs with a 33” waist I had issues. Now I see pictures of my self back then and wonder what the hell was wrong was wrong with me, I was ripped!

So, about a week ago I bought a scale and much to my surprise I was 325lbs, I new I was fat but damn I didn’t realize how fat. My wife has been on me now for quite some time to do something about my weight. She has never been fat… a bit chunky at times, but not fat by any means, at her heaviest she was 134 I think, she’s now about 110lbs and a marathon runner also training for her first triathlon (she defiantly got her sexy back!).

Well I didn’t waist any time after I saw that number on the scale, I decided right away I need to do something about it. I have been walking in the evenings and have cut out all the soda I was drinking (boy that was allot of unneeded calories) and have been eating a much healthier diet for the last 5 days. What do you know it actually works! I got on the scale today and have dropped 8.5 lbs weighing in at a mere 316.5lbs now I just have to stay on track.

I need help with what to eat. My wife is good at cooking a healthy dinner, but she doesn’t eat breakfast and I’m at work for lunch so…

Hey, welcome! I'm pretty new here too.

LOVE the title of your diary. :hurray:

Things that have helped me with the weight loss food wise are cutting WAY back on sugar, ditching the simple carbs (bread, white rice, pasta) and staying far, FAR away from the prepackaged crap you find in the freezer section. Lean meats, lots of veggies, fruits... it would seem the fewer steps between it coming off the plant, or off the animal and your plate, the better. That's just an observation on my part. Portion control and calorie counting are instrumental too. Drinking lots of water (good job on cutting out the soda!), and making sure you aren't shorting yourself on the daily needed vitamins & minerals will help keep you healthy as you lose weight. Lots of great resources on this forum... the mods and veterans of this site keep telling the newbs to read all the stickied threads in each forum, and they are full of very good info.

How does your wife eat? Maybe talk to her about ideas on how you can eat during breakfast and lunch.

Sounds like you've already been doing well these past few days, way to go! I look forward to reading your progress.

Oh yeah, and very cool on 14 years! I'm hitting my 15 year anniversary middle of August.

Get yourself an account at -it's a big help in keeping track of calories and other nutrients... spend some time reading the stickied threads around the forum - especially nutrition (it will give you a good idea of a calorie range to shoot for) and exercise and on tipic -there's lots of good useful information for you to take with you...

What to have for lunch? eh - can be whatever you enjoy - leftovers from dinner the night before is always a good way to go - breakfast can be fruit or oatmeal or baggies of c ereal - whatever you enjoy...

WOW! You are definitely on the right track! :)

Hi, and welcome!

I'm no expert, but I can tell you what works for me for meals.

For breakfast, I have (like Mal said) oatmeal, cereal (not the tasty, sugary ones!), toast with reduced sugar jelly, low fat waffles with sugar free syrup, or anything else that may catch my eye. I always, always, always eat breakfast!

Lunch varies between a small portion of leftovers, tuna, chicken, soup, or occasionally the (sorta bad for you) lean cuisine frozen meal.

Sounds like you have dinner covered! :)

Healthy snacks in between are always good. I usually have almonds, light string cheese, Kashi bars, or whatever else sounds good and is sensible.

Cutting the sodas will make a HUGE difference!

Good luck, and I look forward to reading all of your successes!

Hello all,

Thanks for the advice, I feel like I might be on the right track.

Phoenyx, your right about the vitamins and minerals… I always get sick after I try one of the latest fad diets. I last about a week or 2 and loose 5-10lbs get sick (cold, flew ect…) quit the diet and gain back more than I lost. I’m going to Vitamin world tonight to get some supplements any suggestions?
btw congratulations in advance on the big anniversary coming up that’s quite a milestone!

Maleficent, thanks for the fitday tip that looks cool. I’m not a big calorie counter, just seams like too much work but fitday looks like it will be useful for that.

Daiseeangel, “SUGAR FREE SYRUP” they make such a thing? Oh, there is a God. I’m gonna have to get me some of that! One of my biggest downfalls is cereal and milk, and of course with kids, you know it’s not the good kind. I love cereal I can, and some times do (did) eat it by the serving bowl full. As for milk I would drink a couple glasses a day, easy. I have been doing what you suggest with the small portions of leftovers from dinner for my lunch.

Food for the day:

Breakfast: Running a little late this morning so I just grabbed a hard boiled egg and a little cottage cheese, not the greatest tasting combo but it was all I could find that wasn’t Coco Puffs

Lunch small portion of leftover dinner

Snack: Kashi bar

Dinner is going to be tough tonight, it’s my birthday and my loving family is taking out any place I want to go! I’m struggling with… do I eat a traditional birthday feast, or keep to the plan and just eat sensible.

Hi. I love the title. =)

If you like cereal, Kashi makes a great healthy one called GoLean Crunch. It's 200 calories for a cup of it, but it's full of fiber and protein and VERY filling(and delicious). It's naturally sweetened with honey and great with skim milk. I just finished off a bowl a few minutes ago.

Oh, I saw that you looked into FitDay- I also use FitDay; it's great and I love it, but I constantly hear people raving about how thedailyplate is so much easier and better, and has more foods, etc etc etc if that's any interest to you. :)

Also, happy birthday! I think you should enjoy your birthday dinner, just don't go overboard and you'll be fine- just get right back on plan tomorrow. I don't think it's good for people to use special occasions as an excuse to go off plan all the time, but I honestly think a birthday is a worthy exception to that. :hat:

I LOVE Kellogg's Nutri Grain low fat waffles with Mrs. Butterworth's sugar free syrup! It's excellent! Even James really likes it, and he's pickier than I am! :)

Sugar free jello and pudding with sugar free cool whip make great desserts as well!

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Happy Birthday!!!

I say enjoy your Birthday feast, just keep the portion control in mind. You can always box up the leftovers and have them for lunch tomorrow.

I don't know if I could recommend any specific vitamins, but if you are heading to Vitamin World or GNC, ask them about a good multivitamin for men. That might be a good place to start, and you can tailor it from there. I have a multi that I take plus a few other supplements that it seems my body needs to operate correctly.

I know what you mean about cereal... I have a serious Lucky Charms addiction. :biggrinjester:

Birthday celebration was fun, didn’t get to crazy with the meal. We went to Ted’s Montana Grill they have the best hamburgers and mashed potatoes! Then a little ice cream at Marble Slab, a couple beers with friends and that was it.

Now oddly enough my wife’s birthday is tonight, but I will behave tonight. It’s funny after eating well for only a week or so I felt like such crap after all I ate last night. I don’t think I could do it again tonight if I wanted too. Maybe a couple martinis or gin and tonics at the party and that will be it for me.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes it was fun reading all the post, Hope everyone has a great day!

Rick

Remember alcoholic drinks have alot of calories.

Gin and tonic (2 ounces gin, 4 ounces tonic water): 21 carb grams, 178 calories. Martini (2.5 ounces gin, splash of dry vermouth): 0 carb grams, 175 calories.

Say you have two Martinis... thats 350 calories and you havent eaten anything yet. For the calories in one Martini you can eat 1 slice cheese pizza (183).

If you choose a wine over a martini the calories are way lower.

or maybe Rum and diet coke(133 calories)

and I LOVE bailey's irish cream but I stay away from it because for the calories in it.... I could have

5-ounce lean beef sirloin steak
1 baked potato with 1
tablespoon fat-free sour cream
green salad with 1 tablespoon fat-free ltalian dressing total: 467

I just thought I'd share because sometimes people forget how many calories the are consuming while they drink . Maybe this will help...
