HIIT training

How should i structure my HIIT workouts to get the most efficiency out of them. length, how many intervals, length of intervals, etc... and how often should i do a HIIT workout? i use an elliptical, and just don't want to be doing it wrong or to be hampering my progress.
 
If you are trying to lsoe weight I would recommended doing HIIT on an empty stomach. Below is the program I use with good sucess:

5-7 minute warmup (walk briskly)
20-30 minutes HIIT (Sprint 45 secs, jog 1.5 minutes)
5 minute walk to cool down

A lot of people sprint 30 secs and jog for 1 minute. Just need to find whats best for you.
 
but how often should i do HIIT? I don't want to do it too much and wear myself down, or do it too little and not get enough out of my workouts, what would be a good rule of thumb?
 
Depends on if you are also weight training and if you are trying to lose fat or gain muscle. I do it twice weekly but I am trying to build muscle.
3-4 times per week should be good if trying to lose fat/cutting. I would allow at least 1 day off in between sessions.
