High Intensity Training

Hi all,

After being directed over here to look at the HIIT posts I have to say Im quite excited about trying it!

Just one question, I have a three flight staircase near my apartment, if I ran up it as fast as possible and then walked down it (say 10-15 reps) would this qualify as HIIT? Or should it always be done on the flat ground?

Many thanks

YOu could certainly use the stairs for HIIT. My only concern is that the high intensity part of HIIT is supposed to be REALLY high. And for me, by the time I'm on my 3rd or 4th set, I don't have a lot of coordination left. I'd worry about falling up/down stairs if I were using them for HIIT.

That's me ... I'm a bit of a klutz anyway, but it would concern me.

Its not nec. reps of stairs that you should be looking at.. rather timed intervals. Run for as hard as you can for a minute and run normal for a cooling down period of i like its like 5 minutes is what they suggest. But I agree with Kara.. I'd rather do it on a flat surface just to save my pride because I'd most definitly fall!

I've done bleacher runs before when I was training for wrestling, which is similar to stair running. It's tough, although I've never fallen. However, bleachers aren't quite as steep as stairs. The trick is to keep your feet moving at all times, and to get those knees up (as our coach used to say). Give it a try and see if you can do it. Careful though because one slip, and you can really mess up your ankle, or if your toe slips you can come down on your shin. Worse case scenario, you fall flat on your face. Maybe you should stick to flat surfaces after all.
