Hi all.

Just registered, been looking on here for a while now but never posted but ive hit a bit of a wall in terms of weight loss progress and would like some advice/guidance and thought you all seem like a lovely, helpful bunch so came here :)

I currently weigh 230 pounds, I'm 179cm tall (5 foot 10.7 ish). About 2 weeks ago i started this journey "properly".

To be honest im really eating very little right now, an idea of my daily intake would be -

Breakfast - Low fat bio yoghurt usually accompanied with fresh fruit and water.
Lunch - Weight watchers meal, a 4 point one, with a glass of water.
Dinner - Usually a chopped up chicken peice, grilled with some form of spice, cajun seasoning etc with long grain rice or salad.. and more fruit for dessert.

If im snacking ill probably have a slice of weight watchers bread toasted with vitalite spread.

Im excersising like a woman possessed right now. I bought myself a wii fit so i usually do the aerobic section, e.g jogging, hula hooping, boxing for about an hour and a half a day with the muscle workouts for about 30 mins at night. I also bought the "My fitness trainer" workout dvd for the wii, which i find more effective in getting my heart pumping, if i dont use the wii i do 45 minutes on there, usually 15 mins in the day, 30 at night.

I have done this every day for a week now, but the results aren't really showing much.

So far i have lost 1 pound...

I think maybe I'm going wrong somewhere... I don't have any gym memberships or personal trainers, haven't spoken to a doctor but i am aware of my bmi and what i need to lose for a healthy weight.

I would love some advice on where you think Im going wrong or what you think would be a good calorie intake, workout plan etc..

Right now Im feeling a little disheartended but I'm still positive as like most people on here, I want this more than anything :)

Thanks for reading.. i know this has been long! So if youve stuck to the end... congrats! :p

spend s ome serious quality time reading the stickied threads around the forum -there's a lot of info that will help to educate you.

Get an account at or one ofthe 100s of other free nutrition tracking sites and get a good set of measuring implements and teach yourself what aportion size is and keep track of what you're eating.

Read the stickied theads in the nutrition forum and get a REASONABLE calorie goal for yoursel that you can stick with for the rest of your life.

from what you've written above -you're dieting and will have no concept of what to do if/when you reach your goal weight... focus on lifestyle change.. and make the changes fit into your life

maybe instead of determining your 'progress' through lbs lost on the scale try measuring yourself in inches. measure around your bust, waist, hips, thighs, arms, etc and then remeasure weekly to see if you lost any inches, instead of just concentrating on the scale. with my experience, sometimes the scale wouldn't budge for a week or two, which causes frustration, but i lost inches...so at least i knew i was doing something right.

good luck!! :)

I agree with the previous post about measuring inches. Muscle weighs more than fat so if your working out and losing weight u are probably gaining some muscle which will make it appear that you arent losing much if you rely on the scale. I dont know much about the wii fit but if you ask me nothing beats running around the block, or getting on an elliptical or treadmill at the gym and getting some good solid cardio in. Im not doubting that the wii fit may help but its a physical activity but if you have serious weight loss goals and u can afford to either go to the gym or buy a treadmill do it. serious weight loss take serious effot and hard work which i kind of doubt you can get that from the wii. if im wrong someone please correct me.I feel like they make the wii fit look fun and easy but in reality if your exercising properly it should be hard and a challenge. Anyways other than that make sure your eating 5 or 6 small meals a day and always have breakfast to kick start your metabolism. Good luck in your journey to a better you, I'm sure you'll find a world of help on this forum!

I'm not sure how effective using the Wii to work out with is, but I know that I do break a sweat during boxing, but that's about it. It might be a good way to begin your exercise regimen, but joining a gym would be the best bet for long-term goals and a lifestyle change. I find that when I buy a workout DVD or do Wii Fit, I memorize the workout and get bored with it, then never do it again. At the gym there's weight training, ellipticals and treadmills, classes (kickboxing, spinning, aerobics), and different people so there's no room for boredom there anyday. Plus it's too easy to fall back on the couch behind me, which puts a quick end to a workout. That might just be me though, and just a suggestion...

I don't sit on the couch instead of using the Wii; that's not even what I said. It's just a little easier to cut your workout short if the couch/family/kitchen (distractions) are right behind you. If you go to a gym you probably aren't going to cut your workout short if you walked or drove there. Then again, I've been wrong before, some might.

I agree with the fact that the Wii is good for beginning a workout regimen. But at some point, the Wii won't be a challenge, and the gym would be my suggestion. In my case, I got bored, memorized the programs, didn't break a sweat anymore, therefore it wasn't worth my while, when I could go to the gym and actually get a good workout in.

I'm also aware not all gyms are the same, but it was just a suggestion for the poster because her gym might have classes and what-not. Some communities have more than one gym and she could choose the one that have these options.

Thanks for your responses guys.

When using the wii fit i tend to only use the cardio games, like jogging/boxing, and the muscle workouts and a bit of yoga. But i do also use my exercise bike to really get my heart pumping. I cant really afford the gym right now, only living on my student loan so haven't got an income to afford the gym, i wish i did as i know i could probably achieve alot more. But for the moment i am just trying to get my heart pumping and basically excersise with what i have, which is obviously the wii fit, various workout dvds.. and my legs for walking and im starting to speed up a bit.. hopefully ill be fitter and jogging before i know it!

I had a little measuring chart of all my measurements from before xmas that i made of my arms, chest, waist, thighs, hips.. and i re-measured myself yesterday and found that on all areas i was an inch less, which has made me feel a lot better knowing that something is working even if it isnt starting to show on the scales :)

Its ok that you cant afford a gym membership right now. Just keep your weight loss goals in your head all the time and make little lifestyle changes everyday that will add up to buring a lot of calories. always take the stairs instead of the elevator, & cleaning your house/apartment is a great way to burn calories too. you said you were living on student loans so i take it your in college. when i went to kent state we had a zillion buses to take you around campus because its so big. unless its raining or twenty below zero always walk to your classes. When you go to the store park the farthest away from the store that you can(if its daytime. I wouldnt suggest doing it at night its probably not safe). You might not think that doing something as walking an extra 20 ft to the store will do much but if you add that in with other small changes throughout the day it does make a big difference.

Thanks for all that Patsar, thats really helpful advice! You're right, its about changing my lifestyle to be more healthy.. i dont just want to be on a "diet" (HATE that word its so negative!). Im feeling really positive today, lost 3lbs since i last weighed myself.. so i must be doing something right! i dont really want to lose more than 1 or 2 pounds a week as ive read if you lose more than that you will lose it fast but gain it back just as quick! But im actually enjoying myself now.. usually when im on a "diet" i feel restricted and constantly negative and thinking about food.. but now i get excited and feel pleased with myself when i reach for an apple instead of a choccie bar or bag of crisps.. :hurray:

Thanks again to everyones for your replies!
