I have never joined a forum or anything in my life, but I feel the need for social networking. I am probably considerably older than most of you, 51 years old. I have never had a weight problem, I have always been thin and never had to worry about what I ate. When I turned 50 I gained 20 pounds in a matter of 6 months. I went from a fairly active job to starting my own business as a Virtual Assistant where I sit in front of my computer all the time, but I work from home. I don't know if it is the age thing or the sitting around all the time probably a bit of both that caused the weight gain. So never dieting before or exercising I am at a lose of what to do, I need some advice maybe someone who has gone through this or knows someone who has experienced this. Although anyone who has any advice will help.

Well, I don't know if you are a man or a woman...but I can somewhat address the age issue. I am 49, will be 50 in two months. I am female...and the pounds started creeping up in the past decade. I would occasionally lose a few, to only gain them back and then some. I convinced myself that due to my age and hormonal state that weight loss was impossible. My doctor even told me that at MY age, just maintaining my weight was good, as long as I wasn't gaining! (Can you believe a MD told me that!??)
Anyway, long story short...we started a Biggest Loser challenge at the school where I teach. I decided to get involved, somewhat reluctantly. I even told others that due to my age, etc...that I just could not lose weight. So, imagine my surprise when I actually lost 3 pounds the first week, thru a combination of carefully watching my diet and starting light treadmill workouts by walking. The more I lost, the more motivated I got...I have lost 31 pounds and only need to lose a few more. (By the way, I won the contest!).
I have found that at our age, it definitely takes a strong committment to BOTH diet and exercise to lose any weight at all. Metabolism is slowing way down...you need to fight against that by moving, moving moving!! ALso, drinking lots of water has been very beneficial. Weight loss at 50 is possible...but I do think it takes HARD work and determination...much more than when one is in their 20's or 30's.
Good luck and keep posting! Can you take short breaks from the computer...just get up and move around some? That would be a good start.
Take care!
