Hi, I'm an emotional eater.

Alright, my name is Jayna and I have been struggling with my weight for a while now. I am 5"9' and recently weighed at 180 lbs. My goal is to be 140 lbs which is the rough, healthy weight for my height.

However, I am an emotional eater and I don't know how to get passed it. Not to mention I suffer from clinical depression and have recently been prescribed anti-depressants. That is a lot to take in for someone who is only 17.

At some point every month I begin exercising telling myself that, that will be the day I change my life but after a week I fall back into the same patterns. The story of many lives, no?

I am here in hope of finding support and encouragement from others and I am even looking for inspirational stories that can help get me motivated to change my lifestyle.

If you took the time to read this, please say hi? :)

Hi Jayna and welcome to the board.

I think many of us have been emotional eaters at some point in our lives - I know I am.

One thing that I might suggest is that you register for a free account on one of the sites like fitday.com or thedailyplate.com and start logging your food. Not only will it give you a good idea of the calories you're eating and the nutrition you're getting, having to write down what you put in your mouth often makes you more accountable and makes you really think about whether you WANT that food or are just eating thoughtlessly or emotionally.

Also something I'd suggest is not overwhelming yourself with these thoughts of "today I change my life". That kind of thinking can actually lead to failure because you set huge and high goals and then when you slip up, you just quit, feeling like you've failed.

I've seen it in people who say "I'm going to go to the gym EVERY DAY" then they miss one day and just quit, saying "What's the use - I can't do it anyway."

Instead set manageable goals for yourself. I will go to the gym 3x this week. I will walk for 20 mins today. I will not eat chips today.

Don't worry about tomorrow. Don't worry about next week. Just make ONE GOAL for right now. And get through that. You'll find as time goes on you've made enough small changes to make a difference. :)

I hope that gives you some help in getting started!

Hi, Jayna. Welcome to the board.

I certainly get emotional eating. There are a lot of supportive people here, who have a lot of experience. It can be nice to have a place like this to turn to when feeling emotional.

And I recommend taking KaraCook's suggestions to heart--you'll find she's a great source of both information and wisdom. :)

Hi Jayna...:grouphug:...!! Glad you made it here, babe!! :)

Step by Step...thought by thought, meal by meal, day by day, ....moment by moment. Stay present and don't overwhelm yourself with thoughts of tomorrow. Do your best and most today! :D!!! I wish you well on your journey, hun. You have all the power within you, and we can do this!!! :D!!! You can do this. We are doing this. This is taking the first step. I'm so Proud of you!!!! Hey, welcome! :)

I can really relate to a lot of the stuff you're talking about, I’m actually on anti-depressants right now (just started a few days ago), I'm 19 and I've always struggled with my weight.
I'm an emotional eater too and I know how hard it is to control your emotions and not resort to food when you feel like you can't handle what you're feeling.
This website has been really helpful, I've met some amazing people and I'm still struggling every day but I'm not gonna give up and I hope you don't either :).
If you're looking for inspiration just read some of the stories here, they're incredible.
Anyway good luck and hope to see you around here :)

Thank you so much :) I will look into those sights. Something that I think will help is I finally got a job that will keep me busy. :)
