Evening all

Michael here just joined this forum here's my brief story.

I have quit smoking for 30 days now and not smoked 600 cigarettes, anyway i have decided to try and lose weight now as they say you put it on when you quit.I do need to lose weight this aside.

I am 5ft 8 ins tall
Weigh 14st 11lb (got weighed 24/11/07)
BMI 31.4 (This shocked me as it is classed as obese)

My aims are pretty simplistic really i aim to cut down on food consumption and get more exercise ie walking. My target is to get to a healthy weight/BMI something like 11st 10lb which would give me a BMI of 24.98 and put me in the ideal weight range.I will perservere as long as this takes me.

Thanks for reading my post and i will now take a look around the forum and pick up as much help and advice as i can.

Hi Michael

I am from England too.

Well done for giving up smoking. That will be of vast benefit to your health.

Why not start a diary. It can be very helpful. You can post what you have done and how you are feeling. It is somewhere for people to visit and they may well make comments that could help motivate you. This is what I have found to be the case.

Have you got a pedometer? They are really cheap. Since you say that you are going to do some walking - it can be useful to see just how far you do. A lot of authorities recommend that we should all try to do 10,000 steps a day. I actually do more than this. I am sure that walking will help you to lose weight.

Take care
Best wishes

Evening Margaret

I think i will start a diary thanks for encouraging me.I haven't got a pedometer but the way im doing the walking bit is from a idea from the ,this morning programme a bloke went down from 44 stone too 12 stone in 2 years,

Basically his walking part of his weight loss consisted of going for a 30 minute walk each day 15 mins there and 15 mins back,he never had too increase the time because the fitter he became his walk length increased.

By the way im from the North east part of England Margaret thanks for your reply.

Gracias

Welcome Michael! I recently quit smoking too! (6/23 quit date for me) It's hard to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time...but breathing becomes easier without the smoking so increasing your physical activity becomes more feasible.

Good luck on your journey to better health!

Hi Michael

What part of the north east are you from. I was born in Newcastle.

I know all about the man you mention - I am often mentioning him on this forum.

He said in an interview that he built up to often doing 30,000 steps (he runs in marathons). I aim to do about 30,000 steps per day on average.

Take care
Best wishes

Hi again Margaret

I am a monkey hanger :biggrinjester: oh and before all you animal lovers get cross its a very old legend about people from Hartlepool where i live and them mistaking a monkey as a French spy and subsequently hanging it on the beach way back in Napolionic times.

Thats the reason we are known as monkey hangers.

Hartlepool.

Hi Michael

I know the term monkey hanger well - as you would expect of a geordie.

I know that Dr Chris Steele (the doctor that helped Charlie Walduck) strongly recommends the use of pedometers. I actually bought my first pedometer through that program. I found that it didnt register steps very accurately (I did a weeks shopping at Tescos and the pedometer told me that I had done 15 steps - I dont think so!!!) Anyway a friend got me a pedometer from weight watchers for about £14 which I use all the time. I know that my husband got one from the internet for a similar price.

The thing about pedometers is that you see how many steps you did one day and it challenges you to more the next. Also you can do as I do and wear it all the time. The bits around the house burn calories too. It encourages you to be that bit more active around the house. It is so nice to see the numbers go up.

I think that my walking and particularly my using the pedometer is the difference between my weight loss project and millions of failed diet attempts of the past.

Take care
Best wishes
Margaret
