Hey, guru.....

Speaking of Drs, are you a doc, Doc? Not to lump you in with that crowd of sycophants.

No.

My user name is a play on words. It's designed to evoke memories of the traveling medicine show of days gone by when traveling salesmen entertained the crowds before offering some magic elixir or snake oil guaranteed to cure diseases, smooth facial wrinkles, remove stains in clothing, prolong life, or cure any number of common ailments.

bunkum - "ludicrously false statements"

I like to drop into the various weight loss forums and mlm type forums and piss off people trying to sell some dumb weight loss pills or offering some nonsensical advice about diet.

I've been having an ongoing squabble with a group peddling a certain detox juice. You know, the company that claims the reason you're fat is because of toxins. Flush out the toxins and the fat will go along with it. Those geniuses.

Or as one Dr. McReynolds puts it, (I just did a quick search), "Toxins are stored in fat, so as you cleanse, impurities are eliminated as excess fat is dissolved. If you are normal or underweight it is still important to cleanse. The less fat you have the more likely toxins are going right to your organs."

Wow! That really is insightful. I'm sure a few basic laws of physics were just violated in that one sentence.

I've also asked them to explain this claim too: "They have a 9-Day and a 30-Day program which are both designed to help you lose excess weight and build lean muscle mass while cleansing."

I worked out the calorie intake for the program and I recall it averages somewhere around 650 calories a day. Right. And like I'm going to build lean muscle mass? Exercise isn't even part of the regime. How could you anyhow on so few calories?

By and large, I find they don't like people questioning them. Their stock answer is "try it and see for yourself".

Now that I've got started...

They had a beaut a while back. The bodybuilder types can relate to this one. I should have erased the name from the add, but anyways, here it is.

This ad was all over the net awhile back by that crowd. People that should know better or at least think a moment.

Like they expect us to believe this guy dropped from 5600 calories to 1500 calories and gained 3.56 lbs of lean body weight in two days? (Well, it's true that if your bf% drops, your lbm has to go up, but that's not what he's saying ). :rotflmao:

Hey, guru..... Explain just how you managed to do that!

Actually, I Googled that Paul Neill guy and found he was competing in bb contests long before this company was around. Duh! With a little more digging, I'm sure I could have dug up a few photos too. Would have been interesting to see what he looked like.

Anyways, that's my rant for this evening. :)

Hey,
I haven't been around for too long (yet ;)), but I was wondering what exactly you are Steve? I have read quite a few of your stickies and stuff and I appreciate your advice a lot, I just wondered if you work in this (physiologist? nutritionist?) or if this is just knowledge you have acquired through a passion of yours.
This is not supposed to sound critical in any way, it is just honest curiosity.

By the way I am a medic (I wouldn't say Doc since I haven't practised yet, am still in training), but I do not feel AT ALL that I know enough of nutrition and sports physiology to give anyone advice on that. I am trianing in OG/GYN so if anyone is pregnant I may be of some help ;)!!
What I mean is unless it is YOUR field (or your area of interest), a Doc probably knows as much as anyone on how to lose efficiently weight. Just look at most Dr.s... they tend to be overweight themselves!!

That statements brings back visions of Fatkins, er, excuse me, Atkins.

Sorry.
the best diet book EEEEVAH!!! was Dr Phil's weight loss solution... :) seriously dude - have ya looked in a mirror? have you tried yourp lan yourself? Have ya son? No didn't think so .. that's one of those -those who can .. do -and those who can't - write books and take advantage of those who need to..

My all time favorite diet book has to be Dr D’Adamo's " Eat Right For Your Blood Type Diet".

Like my body knows what blood type I have?

He actually believes that different blood types evolved at different times throughout history and that we should eat a diet based on the types of foods our ancestors typically ate at the time when our blood type was first recognized.

That theory raises a few questions.

Like we should be evolving towards a blood type F pretty soon. People with blood type F will need a diet with lots of fast food, takeouts, pizza, sugary snacks, Krispy Kremes and chocolate to remain in tune with their environment.

Hey, I haven't been around for too long (yet ;)), but I was wondering what exactly you are Steve?

I'm a certified personal trainer. I have two certifications though and I can honestly say I didn't learn much of anything from either one. I've had a strong passion for fitness, health, and nutrition since grade school. I was asking for college level texts long before I actually got to college.

Although I have some credentials, I am more self-taught than anything else. I've always said if you're willing to put the time and dedication into a particular subject, it doesn't matter what package the education comes in..... knowledge is knowledge.

I have two bachelors degrees in unrelated fields.

I started a masters program in ex phys, but not sure I am going to complete it. It's just not that important to me at the moment and I wasn't learning much in it. I'd love to do something with nutrition, but to be honest, the time is few and far between right now. If I do something formal in the future though, that's what I'm leaning towards this hour.

I have read quite a few of your stickies and stuff and I appreciate your advice a lot,

Thanks.

I don't mind the question at all. Trust me.... I'm not trying to be something I'm not.

Good for you, what made you choose that field?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for posting this, Steve. There are so many people out there who don't know what in the hell they're doing and so many people want to take advantage of those of us who aren't quite bright enough to research and explore things on our own- and the internet just helps those wanting to take advantage and hurts the rest of us more.

Haha, you're welcome.

And it's important to note that it's not always about people not being bright enough. Fitness and nutrition is a specialty nitch of education that not everyone has the desire to take the time to understand.

It's the same reason why financial advisers make the big bucks. Not everyone wants to know how to handle finances, so a select few who have a passion for that provide a service.

I got a bit depressed when I went through different parts of hospital and it was all about sick people and dying (I know I know, that I should have thought about BEFORE studying medicine...), so I tried to find where the not sick not dying people were and I found them: in Obstetrics!
Most of my patients are healthy and extremely happy to come and see us, because they will have a baby. Then they come again and have 1 bad day in which they scream and push and poo and vomit, but then they are thankful and happy and most of the people leave the hospital with their babies and I was part of the happiest day of their lives!
I am a sucker for gratitude and they are sooo thankful, so I think I found my field!

Thanx for your answers Steve, that explains a lot!

I'm really just a lurker on the site. My posting is on and off, and I have learn a lot over the past while reading posts, most of it is common sense. Not all new members who are just starting out know enough to get themselves started properly. There is a lot of really good advice that goes on, and a lot of it makes sense. I haven't really noticed a lot of bullshit like there use to be. Just want to say congrats to the admin and the mods for keeping a site like this with very little spam.

Weight loss sites are huge targets for spam, and other bullshit. I have seen sites which follow huge trends and are full of trend whores. This site could even be full of hot air heads who think do nothing but brag about themselves because they've lost so many lbs ect, and do nothing but criticize other people's methods putting them down. But there is plenty of nice people, who give lots of support, and for the amount of people who use this site. I think everyone has done an amazing job.
