Here goes nothing

Well, with the past few years of university I have noticed that my weight has increased rather rapidly, and before I knew it I was at 255 which is way higher than the 210 i weighed only 3 years ago. I started a new workout plan on monday where I will try to walk to the gym, work out, and walk back. The walk is approximately 12 kilometres there and back, so it isn't exactly a short distance. Combine this with a 1200-1300 calorie diet and its a rather intense plan.

I used to be a competitive athlete so going to the gym is nothing out of the norm, but eating properly is the biggest hurdle, but here is hoping I can stick it out, hopefully keeping a online diary of this helps!

Are you a male? 1200 calories seems way to low to me if so...I stick around 1900 calories a day and I've lost almost 5 lbs in a little over a week

Here's some advice and something I learned:
Eat healthy for the first week, don't eat any processed foods or junk. This means whole grains, fresh fruit, low fat cheese and other dairy products, vegetables, and lots of water, if you drink soda, don't drink any or have a diet soda a day max. After about a week, you should actually feel the crave for the bad junk to go away. I've noticed this with me. My weakness is snacking a night, because I sometimes I can't fall asleep well. Try to remember to eat the healthy foods to satisfy hunger, nothing else. I used to drink 7 regular sodas a day and didn't realize why i was doing it until I realized I was hooked to the 'high' from the sugar in it. After you eat healthy foods for a little over a week your cravings should go down alot.

Good luck! You can do it!

Thanks for the words of encouragement! So far everything is going well. I don't plan on weighing myself till next monday, but since I started I have walked 36 kilometres (or 22 miles for you Yanks :patriot:)and have done 1 half hour cardio session, and will likely do some weights tonight. And as far as my diet goes I have eaten well...here's hoping it stays that way!

Welcome Flatlander! Eating properly is a hurdle for me also. Looking forward to reading about your journey.

hi hi!
two things - 1. isn't walking 12k everyday (i'm assuming you go to uni 5 days a week?) for 5 days a bit gruelling?
2. i agree with SparkErosion, 1200 cals sounds bit small. how many calories are you used to eating - by that I mean before you started this new plan?
also (sorry I sound like I'm ragging on at you but it's out of genuine concern) won't walking 12k a day plus what your body burns naturally just living, burn more than 1200 cals?
It sounds like you're aiming for a very high calorie deficit to start with. lifestyle changes usually start with small adjustments and then work higher as you get used to a new routine. but jumping straight into 12k a day plus calorie restricting I'm worried that you may exhaust yourself and end up right back where you started.

But if this is what you want, and since you used to be a competitive athlete you should know all about what I said anyway then I wish you good luck with your plan and cheer you on! Ra ra ra! :)

I am used to the 12k walk as I often have done it in the past. And yeah 1200 is a tad low and as of today i have bumped it up to 1400. The worst thing about the walk is the blisters, other than that it really hasn't bothered me at all. And when i played sports I was a hooker in rugby, that should tell you my general body type, and since your a kiwi you should know what that is like. :cheers2:

If you currently weigh 255, then 1400 calories is still extremely low for you. It's well over a 50% reduction from your current maintenance - especially if you're walking as much as you want to.

You need to be eating at least 2200 calories to be healthy ... and more like 2500. You will still lose - and probably lose BETTER eating a reasonable number of calories and enough protein to sustain the level of activity you're attempting.

People tend to think that if cutting 500 or 1000 calories is good, then cutting 1500 will be better, but the fact is, you body catches on that your starving it and it starts to horde calories instead of burning them and shutting down basic body functions to save energy, like, say the function of healing those blisters, the function of heating your extremeites and that function we like to call thinking. If you've been feeling ditzy for the last few days, I'm guessing thats why. I'm with Kara, up your intake to around 2000 and see where that gets you. Why starve when you don't need to.

Oh god I don't know how you can handle getting blisters and then doing another walk! I have the lowest pain threshold of anyone I know though :)
Ah the typical kiwi rugga player :D I'm guessing you playing in school and then came to uni and stopped? I'm actually a South African who lives in NZ now, so my rubgy alliance lies with the boks (which doesn't work out so well when watching rubgy in a bar filled with All Black fans!)

Ahhh, these are good days to be Bok fan, too bad I can't say the same thing about Canada, we have really tailed off since the 90s where we could play with anyone. Our crowning moment is making the RWC quarterfinals in 1991!

Update

Well so far so good. I made an error when i originally said I was 255. I was, but that was about a month ago, and when I started fresh on monday I was 246. As of today I clocked in at 241, so things are going well. Eating proper foods has suprisingly been easy as well. My workout schedule has went as follows

Monday
12k walk

Tuesday
12k walk
30 minutes on the eliptical

Wednesday
12k walk
Weights at the gym

Thursday
30 minutes on the eliptical

Friday (today)
day off (its raining and the gym is closed :( )

I feel great though and tomorrow plan to walk to the gym and back which is essentially the same as what I did on wednesday. Here's hoping this continues.

Update

Well today marked one week and I feel great! I clocked in at 236, so that is quite the lose- 10lbs. I am not shocked though, as when I do eat healthy and exercise, weight literally falls off me. The hard part has always been keeping it up. It always seems that I lose the most weight the first week, then seem to plateau or lose little thereafter. So if i can lose 3 pounds this week I will be happy. A great first week for me! :)

so that is quite the lose- 10lbs

Epic win!
Keep up the good work!

Omg Canada plays rugby???? hahahaha, I had no idea.
Shame on me.
But it's true. Being a bok fan atm is a treat! We're kicking some Aussie butt!

Hello Flatlander,

Your name caught my eye, and I thought I'd pop in for a moment.

Maybe you're from Sas. :jump:

How are you doing?
Great work on the 10 lb drop!!

Welcome to the forum. :)

Hey Flatlander, and welcome to you!

Good on you for starting your lifestyle change!!!

My hubby is a Kiwi, although we live in Oz.. so I have to tolerate the All Blacks.. (except if they're playing the Wallabies)

But......

Boooo the Boks!

:p
