HELP! noob gained 10+ pounds in less than a month

i agree; i used to eat 8 egg whites in the moring and i would eat them every day but they are too expensive and my dad wont buy me them(i am 15).

So basically, minimize the yolks and I should just eat the white part? Err....currently I'm taking things step by step. For the time being I don't eat snacks in between, I just stick to the 3 meals a day routine. I'll probably do this for a month and see how things turn out. Also I'm also trying to lessen my carbs such as rice and bread and....I'm feeling a bit of starved. Is that ok? Is feeling starved really part of the weight loss routine?

About the milk.....just one regular sized glass...so you're saying it's ok. I usually drink it before going to bed ^_^

thanks again

chouji; be very careful when low carb dieting. it is not okay to feel starved; even when you diet. you should simply exercise, eat 6 smaller meals a day(this keeps your metabolism from slowing down) and eat good fats and a lot of protein. This is a very popular diet(high protein moderate carbs and fats). it is considered healthy and proven to burn fat.

i would like to help you, but will need to know your stats(age, height ect) and what your goals are.

: )

Chouji, this is the score...

Depends what time you feel hungry, 10pm at night, I feel damned hungry. I never feel hungry at any point of the day up to around 6pm. This is due to 'carbloading', to give it a label.

Egg yokes are going to kill you tommorrow. They are very good source of fibre. You could get that fibre elsewhere however and ditch the yokes. IMO, the best way to do this is the white omelette. I have this for breakfast probably three or four times a week. Four egg whites, one bagel, one omellette. Good to go.

Regarding carbs. They are crucial. This is where your body goes to run itself.

White bread = Bad. Toss it for wholemeal bread. Tuna and flaxseed oil sandwich using wholemeal bread, no spread.

Rice = Avoid all but brown rice if you can. Brown rice sucks hard, end of story ;)

Pasta - Stick to wholemeal if possible.

Potatoes - Another great source of pasta.

Make sure you get your carbs in, just don't go eating any carb heavy meals after say, 4pm and no carbs at all after 6pm. Get your required amount in BEFORE these times.

If you eating three meals a day now, here's what you do. Make each meal smaller, then for instance take an apple to work and eat this between lunch and dinner. Have something like a bit of cottage cheese on bread or something between breakfast and lunch. Just something for your body to burn and keep your metabolic rate up, it will help you loose pounds faster.

There's a bunch of other stuff but its late here and all the info is spread around these forums anyhow.

thanks guys, this is what I hate about weight loss, I need to start knowing what I put to my mouth...:(

Anyway, here are my stats...

5'10
190lbs
21yrs. old

my goal? for starters I just want to go back to my old weight first...which is 180. I've maitained this weight for almost 4 years, my weight usually ranges from 175-180(max) I dunno what went wrong now.

I'm gonna do more research on food and stuff, I would appreciate it if you guys could refer me to a site that could help.

For my workout...I'm not really sure my workout counts as cardio exercise. 3 times a week here's what I do....

60 (crunches) 2 sets
20 (Bicycle crunches) 2 sets
25 dumbbell lifts (22lbs) 2 sets
25 push ups 2 sets

After this, I do my usual flexibility and kicking drills. I'm doing some Takewondo that's why I could feel how heavy I've become
My whole exercise lasts about 40-45 minutes. I usually spend 15 minutes on muscle building and 20 minutes on the flexibility and kicking drills

Well, now I've resumed my other hobbies such as basketball and swimming. Every saturday, I go swimming to a 50m. pool and do around 20 laps.
Everytime I swim I make it sure I make at least 1000m in total, my swimming lasts for 1 hour. For the following weeks
I'm planning to do this plus our weekly basketball schedule every wednesdays (lasts about 2-3 hours).

So what do you guys think? Would this be enough to make a dent? hehehehe

Ok I'm learning things bit by bit. And so far, I think the basic precept of weight loss is diet. If understand it correctly, it's not good to eat only 3 times a day. It would be better if I increase the frequency but lessen the quantity?

fly; when you say brown rice sucks hard; do you mean nutrition wise or taste wise kuz i eat it every day (gulp)

lol I just mean the taste man, I hate the stuff but still eat it from time to time for variation :D

Exactly.

As for diet, put "Cutting" into the search engine for this site and look through the thread results. Plenty of ideas. Or just post in the Diet/Nutrition forum in the Mens section. Just make sure to put in all your stats, what meals you currently eat, when you eat them exactly.

Also, go look in the ladies section and look for any of Jenns post. There's a link in her sig to a good site, I think her site, with lots of recipe ideas. Sorry for being vague but I'm not on my normal PC so I don't have my bookmarks ;)

Also, cut those crunches down from sets of 60 to three sets of 12-15. If you can do them easily, add some weight. You look like your going for bodyweight exercises, so why not chuck in some dips and pullups?

Cardio wise, there's really only two ways to do it. HIIT, or fasted morning cardio. Again plenty of info on both on these forums, but if you get stuck PM me.

u might want to take out one set of the abs and add in some barbell rows or something until you meet some of your goals.

as for the website on diet; dont trust every site you go to. theres a lot of them out there that just dont have the right info. if you post more questions on this site, im sure more people will help you out.

AND YES always eat more frequently in smaller portions(not too small).

Guys do you have any suggestions what to eat between lunch and dinner?

Also, you suggested to cut down my cruches...but wouldn't that be bad since my body has been used to this routine?

Lastly, I've read in some threads that in losing weight you could actually lose your muscles instead of your fats. They say it's a common misconception that the body turns to stored fats when it rans out of fuel. It's also possible that your body will breakdown your muscles and convert them to energy leaving your fats intact:eek:

No how do I avoid this :(

Ok, this is really my last question. While going through this weight loss routine, do I have to follow this very strictly. Like...on some occassions, can't I go out with my friends and eat unhealthily:D

1st:
you can eat cottage cheese w/yougurt/wheat germ/both or maybe a cheese stick(part skim) wrapped in 3 slices of turkey brest or bread w/natural peanut butter or some high protein cereal or some chicken breast w/brown rice or a sub or some fish or some peanuts or a protein shake or an apple w/pnut butter

can you see your abs from all those crunches? if not its b/c you just have some fat covering them; doing ab exercises doesnt reduce fat. if you CAN see them, nevermind what i said and keep doing them.

yes its true that you usually lose a lot of muscle with fat. the way to avoid this is to train the muscles with a 3 day/week weight lifting routine combined with 2-3 days of High Intensity Interval Training. please tell me if you dont no wut that is.

it depends on how hard you work out; usually splurging on junk food once in a pretty good while will just give you extra calories for your body; if you are weight lifting, your body turns extra calories into muscle/fat. You will gain some muscle and some fat. Just try to make it a "good" splurge. for example if you are at mcdonalds, dont get french fries; instead get a burger(it has protein while fries dont).

life isnt all about looking good; unless working out is all you care about; it should not be keeping you from enjoying yourself with your friends.

Ok, I've noticed you've been recommeding food high on protein...why? If it's that helpful I could force myself to eat fish/chicken all through out the week

No, they're totally invisible! :( Though I believe all my crunches are not useless. It may look super soft from the outside but I've built it sturdy enough to withstand powerful kicks. But of course I can't make people kick or touch my abs to make them believe it's there...huhuhuhuhu

Errr...just a minor question...what do I get from beef. I had to stay late for work and don't have the means to eat a decent dinner so I just stopped by burger king and ate a regular cheese burger:p

this is exactly the reason why you gain weight. its not just the beef (Although beef is not a lean meat). The cheese they use is horrible and the buns have a huge GI giving you a big insulin spike.

a cheat meal at BK maybe once a month isnt going to be too terribly detrimental but its all the little cheats here and there that add up. If you really want to get lean, you need to eat a clean diet.

If you cant do that, then maybe you arent ready for a change in lifestyle. You need to be able to embrace the change completely.

i totally agree with junkfoodbad. the reason you cant see your abs is kuz you eat fastfood; you have some fat covering them. Since your abs are strong enough to withstand kicks, the crunches are doing you good; you have strong abs its just you cant see them kuz of the fat.

Many say that diet is like 80% of seeing your abs and exercise is the rest

oh; high protein with moderate carbs and good fats IS a healthy diet but dont force yourself to eat chicken and fish all the time. you need a balance of healthy foods and whole grains ect ect.

I have a question...what really is HIIT? I've googled about it, and apparently a good number of guys are suggesting it's effective. But why haven't I heard about this until now? If it's so effective why are people still doing low-carb diet, why can't they just switch to do this?

Also, do I really have to make it a point to eat in between lunch and dinner? I'm currently working, and I feel kind of akward that I have to leave my desk every now and then to eat. Well, it's more embarassing for people to see me eating at my desk....not to mention we're always on a tight work schedule.
