Help! New Beginner Don't know nothing!

I just registered here and I think I'll really like this forum.
I looked through some new beginner posting but there are many.
I am trying to start weightlifting and I need help. I don't know where to start. Can some one please help me? I weigh about 210lbs. I tried the fad diets and I lost 10lbs, and then I gained it back. I no longer care about losing weight I'm thinking about building alot of muscle. I just don't know how much I should bench, lift, squat etc...at first. Is there a certain percentage of my body weight that I should first start out with? I'm a student and I've thought of going to a personal trainer after graduation, but that's 6 months away, I think maybe theres a lot I can do in 6 months to get a head start. I'm 5'9, so I am overweight.
Thanks for any comments.

Do you lift at a gym? If you go to a gym, is there a PT there? If you lift at school, I'm sure they have a strength coach or PT there; this will be important so that you have someone to show you proper technique. How many days a week do you have where you can lift?

I can work out 3 days a week, I have some workout equipment at home, I don't go to a gym, I can't afford it right now. I have a bench, leg press, squat thing all in one, free weights, Ball etc

I remember back in middle school or high school, the coaches would tell us what we needed to start with and either put more weight or less weight from there. We would max out and then ..........?
I don't know, they had their ways of finding out, I just don't know where to start. I don't care about how they came up with the numbers, but I want to start low, and work upwards,
I started to work out long ago, when I first got this bench, but I over did it with the weight.
