Help Me!

I have recently enlisted into the military, and I have realized that I have somewhat of a problem: I can barely do 15 good pushups. This won't help me out too much in boot camp... I asked around on how to improve, and I always got the same answer: just keep doing them, build yourself up. This doesn't work for me. The rate of improvement is WAY too slow, and I don't have much time. I'm leaving in about 2 to 3 months, and I need improvement FAST. I'm not looking for "defined abs" or "huge biceps," I just want to be strong enough to pound out 20 pushups at random without struggling. Please help me out!

Don't worry. You'll build up while you are there, they will make sure of that. The best way to up your numbers is to do hourly sets. If you can only do 15 then do 8-10 evey hour. Or 5-10 every 30 min until you reach 10+ sets. Your numbers will go up fast. Once a week go to failure. Time yourself and see how many you can do in 2 min....If you can do any more, stay in the front leaning rest as long as you can before you fall. The biggest thing is not to give up. Another tip is to stop at the top, take 2-3 deep breaths where you exhale all you air out. This will give you an extra 5 reps or so.

Mayhem, I'm ex-army myself... so I can tell you from personal experience that you'll be fine once you get down there. I'm guessing that your main concern is that you'll get smoked by a DI or DS and won't be able to finish it and get more grief because of it. News Flash... they're going to smoke the h*ll out of you regardless... Believe me, they can yell at you longer then you can do push ups, sit ups or pretty much anything else you can think of.

I noticed you said that the your rate of improvement is way too slow... the only thing I can tell you is that there isn't a fast way to build muscle. I mean, you're already doing 15 push ups and your goal is 20. That's only 5 push ups you need to pick up in 60-90 days... I'm sure if you stick with what Johnny suggested, you'll easily get the 5 you need.

Good luck!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that is from personal experience of mine as well. One thing to remember though...you don't want to be the weakest guy there b/c your team won't give you the respect you deserve.
The time you have is plenty to get where you want, just stick with it. Don't forget those pull-ups and sit ups as well. Sit ups suck, but they still eval them. Make sure you are used to running.

Thanks for all of your help and support. I have an excersise routine now, and I am improving greatly. I forgot to mention that one of the largest reasons I'm concerned is that I have an excellent chance of landing in the toughest flight (or squad) of Lackland Air Force Base. Reason being that they do not administer a physical test to gauge your ability, rather they do it by height and weight- and being 5'10" and 160 lbs I should be in great health. But from my previous post you realize I'm not, and on top of that I've been a regular smoker for 3 and a half years. I'm confident now, and I will stick to my routine. Thanks guys! (and girls, maybe)

I just left Lackland about 5 months ago. What squadon are you referring to? The training is all the same, no flight is better than any other. Oh, except for band camp, they don't do $hit. Literally :D
