HELP! I'm stuck/plateauing for months now....

Hey everyone.

To sum it up:
I started my weight loss journey last August (2007). I began at 215 pounds and by December 2007 I was about 179. Today, I weigh 175. I have never been below 170 in the past 6 months, but definetely fluxuated through the 170's.

I look better than I did in December, and have lost a dress size since then. I am in pretty good shape. I weight lift and run and am confident that what I do in the gym is paying off inches wise, but now I need to lose the rest of the weight!

I work out 5-6 days a week and consume about 1500-1700 calories a day (which may be too much)... I had surgery in the beginning of May, and thought it would take me much longer to recover than it actually did. The doctor let me exercise after 2 weeks though. I don't start school until June 30 (we can go in minimesters here) and go to the beach with my family who hasn't seen me since last July (when I was 215!) one week from today.

I get frustrated, feel like I have too much time on my hands. Should I be working out twice a day? How can I get out of the 170's? HELP :)

Try remeasuring yourself -- I've been plateauing since January, but having taken some measurements, I've lost about half an inch all over, despite the scale being stuck. It's probably not as bad as you think!

Kicking up your workouts or adding in extra ones could be good. Make sure you are eating lots of protein (I love 1% cottage cheese with fruit - filling and good!) and NO empty calories.

Feel GREAT about your loss so far - I am sure your family will be thrilled when they see you!

You can definitely bust through this plateau, as I don't think you are near to your goal weight yet. Generally it seems to be those "last 10 pounds" when you are at the very top of your healthy range when it gets really, painfully difficult. Or at least that has been my excuse as I approach my goal weight.

Best wishes on your continued journey, and enjoy your family time!
Cheers

Thanks for the advice! I definetely should be all about the protein -- and I know I need to do a better job with eating breakfast. i love cottage cheese though - so thats a good idea. I'm starting to run again after my surgery so that should help too. Again, thanks for the advice.

I am right there with you, lost the first 15ish pounds nicely and then plateaud. I have been stuck at 140 forever (one day it is 145, one day it is 141, but never less than 140).

I really can't give advice because this is the first time it has happened to me, but for me it was that after a few months I had gotten quite comfortable in my new weight and my new lifestyle, so much so, that I started slacking a tad. Ate more chocolate (I allow a bit every day, just nto tons of it), exercised less and less...
So to break my plateau I have decided to push the exercise up and the eating crap down, and well we will see. The first week was more than frustrating (gained, but I think it must be water weight since I was pretty religious about exercise and food), but I feel better and my tummy seems to be shrinking (now of course this is completely subjective).

I hope you find a way out of your plateau soon too (how frustrating is it to see the next group of numbers, in my case the 13x in yours the 16x come closer and closer just to go farther away again?), Camy

Thanks Camy! I totally know what you mean about being comfortable... I hadn't even thought of it like that before, but I think you've hit the nail on the head with me. I had so much desire and tried so hard to lose my first 40, and even though I've incorporated healthy habits (eating/exercising) into my life -- I still need to give myself that extra push. Good luck with your weight loss and hopefully we both can break thru these plateaus!

Hey there.. kind of the same boat as you. I lost 95 pounds in the first 8 months, but have only lost 15 in the past 4 months. Have been hovering around 170 the past 3 months. I had a really bad weekend last week and gained 3 pounds. Now I got rid of them in a week, which I'm sure some of it was water weight from having so much damn soda. Do you do the same things usually? I finally got around to trying a spinning class at the gym, and am going to try doing a few other classes. I'm getting really bored with doing the same thing lately. I just started eating a lot more fruit, A LOT. I will go through 1 large cantaloupe and a bag of grapes a day. It is getting expensive, lol. Other than that, just stick with it. Good luck!

Thanks for the sweet message, MelanieAnn! The 170's are not fun to be stuck in :) as you and I both know! I just had surgery on May 9 so that threw the exercise for a loop a little bit. I love to run -- and am trying to incorporate more weight lifting into my routine. How do you like the spinning class? I"ve never been to one but they do offer them at the gym I go to.

I am starting the "summer 5k series" in my town tomorrow. Every Wednesday, I will be running a 5k. Last night I ran 3.3 miles (but on a flat track), so hopefully I can do it. I've run two before, but it has been a few months. Eek -- sort of nervous! Anyways, thanks again for the nice message and best wishes for you

You're welcome. :) I know how it is, I had an accident and a minor surgery back in October. the class was okay for the most part, but man my ass hurt! I like that there's no clock or anything in the room or on the bikes, cause i have a bad habit of staring at the time wishing it would go faster lol.. i'm hopefully trying some other classes in the next couple weeks so we'll see how that goes. :)
