Hello. I'm a 23 year old who's having a bit of trouble losing weight. I'm 76 inches tall and weigh 250 pounds. I run at least every other day, at least three miles (some weeks I run every day) and I hit the gym for an hour every day. I don't eat a lot-usually a banana or an orange for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch-tuna, chicken salad or peanut butter and jelly, and I really don't load it down or anything-and usually some fish or pasta for dinner, and not a very large amount at all. When I snack, I usually eat a small handful of unsalted nuts or some crackers and cheese (no more than five of those at a time) and I limit myself to snacking once a day. On the weekends I do drink (liquor, not beer) and go out to restaurants, but at the restaurants I usually order a salad or a healthy choice from their menu, like a "under 550 calories" entree at Applebees. A lot of my weight is muscle, but I definitely do have a gut, and I would like to lose 30 pounds at least, eventually fifty pounds.

The really frustrating thing is that I used to eat a lot more, and a lot more unhealthy foods, while exercising the same amount. I started eating a lot less, and a lot more healthy foods, and I remained the same weight-it'll vary up and down by five pounds a day depending on how hydrated I am and such, but it's been a month now and despite changing my diet, I still consistently weigh 245-250 pounds. Does anyone have any advice?

I believe that the trick is to get your total daily calories below what you need. Can you give me an idea of what your TYPICAL total daily calorie count is. Also, think about differences in your weekday and weekend eating. I assume that you are a man by your language, but I am interested if you have ever been in shape and just gained or if you have always been heavy

Well, this is the heaviest I've ever been. A few years ago I was eating very, very little due to my situation (If I had to estimate, I'd say I took in perhaps 1000 calories every two or three days, and there were days I couldn't eat) and was largely sedentary other than at work because I just didn't have the energy for anything, but I weighed close to 100 pounds less than I do now. Once I got myself out of that situation and began eating more and working out more, I weighed 200, and I was very healthy and happy at that point. Since that point, my weight seems to have crept up slowly (I never experienced rapid weight gain).

I eat anywhere between 1400-1600 calories a day currently, and more around 1800 on the weekends. For someone of my size and activity level, 2500 calories a day is what I need to maintain my weight, so I figured that this should keep me on track to lose about two pounds a week, but this simply hasn't happened. Oh yes, and I am a male.

It may sound a little cliche but it is worth talking to a doctor and let them know what you are concerned about. Let him or her check you out, do a blood test, etc. Sounds almost as if you are eating too little from my untrained eye. I think you need to log EVERYTHING you eat and drink in calories. Sometimes when you actually record it, you remember things that you eat ritually.

Have you always had a weight problem.
