Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and I really need some help. I really want to loose weight but I don't know where to start. Maybe someone to point me in the right direction about finding the right diet and exercise program. (Keep in mind I'm a college student so expensive solutions won't be an option for me...lol) I have always been heavier, but now I'm at my heaviest point and I'm too young to get tired so easily. It wasn't always like this.

Like I said, in High School I was heavier too but not at an uncomfortable weight. At about 5'7 190 lbs I felt happy. I wore a size 12, I played three varsity sports and even though I wasn't very thin, I was healthy. I want to get back to that weight. I thought it was perfect. I had muscle but still feminine.

Since then, I have gained a little more then 100 lbs. I am about 300-310 and I just don't feel comfortable. Most don't think I'm that weight but I am. Most exercises are to advanced for me to do right now and I would love to work out in the privacy of my own home because to be honest its a little embarrassing to do it in a group now.

I have start going out less and just want to be at home lately. Just a year ago when I was maybe 20 lbs lighter I went out and its still not that big of a difference weight. I don't know whats wrong with me.

One more thing, I don't know if it helps but most of the women in my family are heavy. On my both my parents' sides of the family. It has been a generational struggle.

Sorry for the long intro, but the help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks All

Hi everyone,

Have you read the stickies?

(Keep in mind I'm a college student so expensive solutions won't be an option for me...lol)

Eating less and moving more generally doesn't cost much :)

I am about 300-310 and I just don't feel comfortable. Most don't think I'm that weight but I am. Most exercises are to advanced for me to do right now and I would love to work out in the privacy of my own home because to be honest its a little embarrassing to do it in a group now.

And that's perfectly fine... you certainly don't have to join a gym to lose weight. Losing weight is very simple on paper. It's simply a function of being in a caloric deficit. Sure, it can get quite a bit more technical than that but there's no reason to muddy the waters at this stage in the game.

Start out simple.

You can buy exercise DVDs that you can do from the privacy of your home. Start walking more. And most importantly, get a handle on your nutrition.

The last bit is most difficult for most college students. The temptation to eat more than you're body needs is overwhelming in college. You can either start making better food choices which will almost guarantee a reduction in calorie intake or you can get more "technical" than this and start tracking your calories.

If you go the latter route, using something like can be a big help.

And as noted above, spend some time reading the stickies.

One more thing, I don't know if it helps but most of the women in my family are heavy. On my both my parents' sides of the family. It has been a generational struggle.

Personally I believe this is more about habits passed down from generation to generation than some fat gene theory or the like. Granted, there are some hereditary factors that can and do get passed down but even with these factored in, metabolic variability isn't that great. At the end of the day, it's still a matter of expending more calories than you eat over time.

hey girl,
welcome to the forum! your definitely in the right place since there's lots of useful info on here and everyones really friendly.

i can identify with pretty much everything you said on there, i started at 350+ pounds and now i'm at 317....i still have a looong way to go but everyday when i know i've eaten right/exercised i feel so much better about myself and it makes me want to keep going on and on till i get to my goal.

in terms of exercise if your not into the whole gym idea there's still loads of options, in case you choose to try out workout dvd's i'd suggest trying to search for sample video clips on youtube before you purchase the dvd so that your sure it's a workout you'd like and hence can do everyday, otherwise if you end up buying a dvd you don't like then you might not be so interested in doing it.

umm...thats all i can think of for now...all the best on your weight loss journey xoxo

@Steve Thanks a lot about stickies and the diary especially. The big thing will be staying on track. I think my competitive nature and the support of the this website will help me out a lot. I'm so excited.

@Cherry The progress you have made is inspirational. How did you keep going at first? I get discouraged when I try hard and see no results. But at least I found a place for help now. Do you have any tips?

hey fangurl,
in terms of how i started, i know it may sound silly but it's like a switch got turned on in my head and i knew i was ready, all my life i had tried loads of 'fad' diets and did them half heartedly and would give up after a few days. now i'm older and wiser and something just clicked early this year and decided enough is enough so i quit all the 'fad diets' and started a lifestyle change.

so i started by slowly cutting out junk food (sugary foods, fried foods etc), and started eating more healthy by increasing my veges/fruits intake and switching to wholemeal carbs like brown bread/rice/pasta and lean protein mainly lean beef mince, skinless chicken breast, fish etc i also increased my fiber intake and drink loads of water too. oh yeah and now eating more healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, fish etc

after about a month of starting to eat healthy i then started working out (in march), i signed up for a gym (since i had a park right next to where i live and have NEVER stepped foot in it i knew that i'd never get round to it, and currently where i live there's loud creaky floor boards so i'm too embarassed to do workout dvd's from the house which would have been my first option), but i knew i needed to get my body moving so what i did was sign up at a gym where i knew i'd bump into absolutely no one i knew. i remember day 1 i was so embarassed to wear my workout clothes and even getting out of the changing room took forever since i was trying to think of every excuse to just give up and leave. but 3 months later and now i'm loving the exercise and have never regretted joining the gym, i'm the biggest person there and don't give a hoot, it's just me and my ipod doing my thing and everyday my body and mind thanks me for it.

i think the fitday.com link that steve gave you is great for counting calories, i only just started using it myself last week...before i was just basically eating healthy portions of meals but not actually logging my caloric intake (but of course was making sure everything i ate was healthy)....then recently someone sent me this link on the forum and i took a look i'd also recommend it to you as it will let you know how many calories you need to eat a day to help you loose weight. it also tells you how many grams of fat, protein and carbs you need to eat a day, and that's where fitday comes in to log your calories which is a really great tool. remember for fat eat healthy fats (it's explained in the stickies that steve recommended and all the other healthy stuff too.

starting is the hard part but whats most important is that if you fall you get up dust yourself off and try again and again untill you one day succeed.

i'd recommend going into the forum 'diary' section and starting one of your own to write down your daily activity/nutrition or just to vent...you can also read other peoples diaries too. it's a really good support system.

okay, i think i've rambled on enough...wishing you all the best xoxo

3 keys to losing weight in college

i followed 3 simlpe rules for weight loss in college that worked like a charm.

1. Walk every were. Even if the destination is 2 miles away hoofing it can help you burn mucho calories.

2. Make your own food as much as possible. this was you can gain control over what, when and how much you eat which are the 3 most crucial components to your diet.

3. At the start of each semester be sure to get your workout routine in place A.S.A.P. it's much harder to get into a workout routine even after a week of the start of a new semester.

Hope this helps
