Hello! I'm new.

Hi, I'm extremely new to this website. I haven't poked around these forums very much but I figured I'd post here first.

I'm 25 and in recovery for an eating disorder. I'm currently working on eating healthy (I think I'm doing okay with this area now!) and exercising (oh god help me). It's taken me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I don't need to lose weight anymore (I'm 5'11" and 140 pounds) so I'm just trying to tone and gain muscle definition.

I'll be honest- I have no idea what the heck I'm doing. We have a weight machine in the back yard but I'm not sure how often I should be using it. Anyway, I look forward to learning many new things about fitness and nutrition here. :)

There are some very good threads around with numerous exercises you can do.
Rules to follow at the start are simple and if you get them all right, you will be in the minority, and do incredibly well.

Train the whole body, including your heart and lungs. Don't do weights with no cardio, or all arms and abs etc.

Start steady and remember the idea is overload, not injury. If you ache a bit the following day, that's OK, being immobile is not good, and if you don't start aching until two days later (known as DOMS) you have gone way too far and caused major muscle damage.

Don't be in a rush. If you want a wonderful body for a holiday next month, sorry it will have to be pretty wonderful now to get it. However if you want something that will look good for next years, that is far more realistic. I have said before, the more patient individuals with long term goals often get the results before those looking for quick fixes.

Most important of all. Enjoy it. Find activities you like and you will keep to them, if your dread the idea of going out to the weights machine or running, or the classes etc. you will often quit. If there is a common reason for this not linked to the activity fix that, for some it's solitude, then find a training partner, others being watched, train alone. Those of us who love our training really get a buzz off it and our lives are enhanced in many ways. My brother and I both keep fit, but in totally different ways, put a ball at my feet I am lost, a bar in his hand likewise, because we hate those activities, however the other way around and we love it.
