Hello all

Hello all, I’ve been lurking for a few weeks now and finally worked up the nerve to speak out loud.

I’d like to say that I’m currently trying to get back into shape; but that would mean that at some point in my life I was in shape.

I’ve never been in shape. I’m a bookish introvert who, until recently that is, has never seen the inside of a gym.

Thanks largely to those new stretch weaves, I had been the same size since I was about 15 years old. That is until I turned 33. Long story short, I tried to buy some new clothes and ended up crying in the parking lot after I discovered I went up two sizes in eight months.

My goal is to be lean and statuesque. Currently though, the only statue I resemble is the Venus of Willendorf, only with smaller breasts. I weigh roughly 200 lbs, depending on what scale I’m using.

Now for a question. My problem has never been over eating. I tracked my calories for a month, even including things like extra half and half in my coffee, and found out that I don’t even eat 1000 calories a day. I don’t drink soda; in fact, other than my morning coffee, I only drink water. It’s not that I am purposefully starving myself, I’m just not hungry. I love food, and I’m a great cook, but I never really feel hungry.

Does anyone else have this problem? According to both my doctor and my trainer I should be eating more. My trainer assured me that once I started working out I’d want to eat more but that hasn’t happened. I’ve been hitting the gym for over a month now and still haven’t seen an appetite change. Is this something that anyone else is going through? How are you handling it?

Welcome, I'm new too.

Weight loss is simply achieved through taking in less calories than you use. I'm sure you know this, but it leads to something strange in your case: You're burning less than 1000 calories a day. That is very little and it seems your body somehow thinks you're in starvation mode. This is just more baffling when you say you exercise also because that would imply you expend a fair about of energy a day.

Honestly, the best advice in this case would be from a medical professional. You could possibly have a genetic disorder which has slowed your metabolism or any number of things. I don't mean to alarm you in this regards, but it would be wise to get a second medical opinion to pinpoint the cause of this. If you consume =<1000cal a day and exercise then you should be losing weight somewhere (fat or muscle).

Also, there could be a practical solution. If you're supposed to increase your calorie intake to stabilize your metabolism then steadily increasing your calorie intake up to what is required to maintain your body weight and then working down might work. It is also possible you're sneaking in calories from somewhere where you don't realize, maybe you're underestimating your calorie intake somewhere.

A real dietitian/doctor would probably be more help in your case, though.

first, see a doctor anyways but you are not burning under 1000 calories a day. The human body burns more than that by existing. My first answer? You are underestimating your calories big time. I know you say you have been tracking them but outside of a medical condition, there is something wrong with your math.

Just in case it could be helpful to someone else, because it was certainly helpful to me, you were right. I was underestimating my intake. The calorie tracker I was using and I had a completely different idea of what "extra cream" in my coffee actually is. That alone added an extra 60 calories to my intake.

Because of that, I suggest to anyone else who may be having this same problem to go through a couple of calorie counters before you settle on one. And actually measure your portions instead of guessing like I was. Again using my morning coffee as an example, because I already had a tablespoon to measure my portions out with in that case, I found at that my perceived 2 tablespoons of half and half was actually more like 4.

As for a possible reason for not losing anything yet, after finding a more accurate calorie tracker I also found out that about half of my diet consists of dairy fat. Also I seriously underestimated my beginning weight by about 15 pounds.

Hello, I'm newbie too. Nice to be friends
I have just got a baby and I'm trying to lose some weight. Hope that you can help me

Cheese, double creamer in my coffee (real cream, not that fake stuff), cheese, cream cheese, yogurt, whipped cream (homemade) and of course butter on everything it can go on...and sometimes I few things it doesn't need to. Like I'll ruin a perfectly good steamed veg plate by covering it in butter. Unsalted of course, because I do try to be healthy. Oh, and cheese, did I mention cheese?

I counted all my butter, cheese, creams and everything else and found that all of those things bump up my numbers to 47% of my intake being fat. I changed that around today and got a nice even ratio. Which I think is a good start so far.

Wow, that's a lot of dairy food. That definitely could be a reason for your weight loss problem. Hopefully your new diet covers the other food groups better. You can share your diet with others here if you are unsure that you are getting a good variety of nutrients.

Those cute little 70 calorie cheese sticks are probably my biggest issue. There are some days when all I eat is three or four of those all day until dinner. (By the way, that's how I end up staying under 1000 calories on most days. For almost a month now my portion of dinner has stayed around 500 calories, even with all my extra butter, which means I'm only getting about 800-900 calories on my cheese binge days.) That really skews my fat ratio. Even though they are low calorie, if they end up being all I eat all day, until a butter covered dinner, they still seriously offset my fat intake. Check my diary post and you can see how I'm trying to cope...if you're interested that is...there's no reason for me to post that here and there though.
