Heart Rate

My heart rate is about 182-185 when I run. It feels good to me, but I don't want to drop dead of a heart attack.

That's not really that uncommon. I do alot of endurance events so I'm pretty conditioned for it and I still sit on 175 bpm with an easy run, like an 8 minute mile. If I'm pushing myself I can easily hit 182 for extended periods of time while running. A generic chart would probably say that is beyond the max heart rate of a 31 year old but I do it all the time. I measure with a $400 Polar heart rate monitor with a chest strap too so I know it's accurate. I go trail running pretty often and can spike it even higher than that on the hills, and I do it for 2 hours straight... and I'm not dead yet.

I have a friend who is older than me who can hit 210 bpm while blasting up a hill on a bike.

Don't be going and having a heart attack on me.... I need you in prime condition for American Gladiators.

Oh, Kodiak can not be brought down by something as small / simple as a heart attack.

My paws will give my opponents pause

I've been visiting several forums here and I am getting different answers, of course

I want to lose weight.
I need to burn more calories than I take in.
What measure can/do I use when working out to know this information?

I'd start simply by tracking your caloric intake. Are you doing this now?

Target heart rate for weight loss

According to this site, in order to lose weight/burn fat, my target heart rate for my workout should only be in the 60%-70% range. Doesn't this conflict with the basic premise of calories in must be less than calories burned?

If I'm working for 60 minutes and keeping my heart rate up between 135-145, shouldn't that burn more calories than the same 60 minutes with my heart rate between 103-120?

If weight loss is the goal of my workouts, am I hurting myself by working out at a higher heart rate than the 60%-70% range? Or will the higher intensity workout burn more calories, resulting in a larger deficit, equaling greater weight loss?

You're right, it's about net energy expenditure.

Sure, there is a fat burning 'zone' with regards to heart rate but who cares what your primary fuel source is during an exercise bout?

That's not as important AT ALL compared with net energy expended.

Thanks Steve. So I can work out at a level that will not only burn fat, but be good for my heart too. :)

Yup, you're fine working out at a higher intensity than that.

I'd recommend it actually assuming conditioning is well off enough.

I thought I was getting into pretty good shape...still heavier than I would like, but I've reached my intermediate goal and my weight is within the "normal" range now....but based upon my recovery rate, I'm barely alive.

According to what I've read, my heart rate should drop a minimum of 30 bpm in the first minute after I stop working out...anything less than that and I should be seeing a physician before working out.

I've been working out 2 hours per day for more than 4 months now....and my heart rate is dropping barely 30 bpm after workouts now. I don't know what it was before...but apparently I've either not improved my condition much or I'm lucky I didn't die.

(Yes, I just got a heart rate moniter so I'm figuring this stuff out)

target heart rate

i have a question? So i have been working on the elipitcal for about 2 weeks, no weight lost yet. though i have only been keeping my heart rate about 130-140 at the end for about 30 min. Am i doing something wrong? SHould my heartrate be higher for more results? though when my heartrate get to high i dont feel like coming back the next day. any suggestions?

what are your current stats?
what's your meal plan look like?
What else are you doing for exercise?

there's a few threads around on heart rate...

You can run as hard or long as you want, but if your nutrition is not aligned with your goal of weight loss..... nothing is going to work.

And yea, we need your stats.

I am not sure what you mean by stats. i am about 5'5 and weigh 200lbs. i want to drop about 40lbs. I am taking it day by day and tryning to remind myself how to eat well.

i used to work out only 2 days a week and go as hard as i could get my heart rate to about 181 or so . i was just sooo tired by then.

so now im trying to track exactly what i eat. sometimes its not all good but im working on it. for instance yesterday i ate about 1700 caleries. oatmeal and coffee in am. bannanna snack. steamed rice and soup for lunch. nuts for snack, then speggetios for dinner. ( i know not good at all).

I aslo worked out for 35 min on the elypitcal at hr of 130-145.

so i think i am on the right track.

i just dont think that my workout is doing anything maybe because i am not tooo exhausted when i get off the machine just not sure.

i would love any extra advise if i should go harder or just keep consistant with this routine.... thanks

At that caloric intake you should be losing weight considering your size.

What's your age?

im 26 be 27 in april. so not that old. thats why i though to that i should be loosing more weight thank i am. i have doing this kind of caloric intake less than 2000 for about 2weeks and at the gym at least 3 times a week and walk my dogs in the am for about 20 min. but over the last 2 weeks only about 1llbs down.

And what has your weight done during these 2 weeks?

And in honesty, how positive are you that you've been under 2000 calories worth of intake each of the days of said 2 weeks?

pretty positive under the 2000 mark for the last two weeks. i got on the scale last monday was 199 and yesterday i was 198. so like 1lbs a week. its better than nothing. so trying to keep myself motivated. im thinking not to eat carbs after 3 in the afternoon. to see if this may help and have two serv of veg at night... i heard someone talking about it at the gym.
