Headaches with exersion

Hi. these past few days i have been having very bad headaches whenever i exert myself. started with weights training, when doing a chest press, and the compression just seemed almost to force blood to the head and create the pain. Yesterday and today have seen the headache emerge with even warm-up type exercises with low intensity like push-ups and chin-ups. I have not dared to exert and push through the headache.
Would really appreciate any help. Thks.

Could be because you are not breathing properly. If you are holding in your breath while you create force and exert yourself you are going to force blood to your head which could cause headaches and dizziness. If you know your breathing is sound it could be some kind of blood pressure problem. I would make sure you are preforming the exercises properly and breathing properly. If all that is good, then a doctor's visit may be in order.

I agree with Limestix, sounds like a breathing issue. Maybe lighten up the weight a bit so you don't feel the need to hold your breath? I know it's hard for men to go lighter because of ego but really you will progress faster if you are breathing and staying in a good but challenging range. Breathing is key to all you are trying to do with weightlifting. Your body needs that oxygen to metabolize the fat and build your muscle!

Limestix is right that if you are concerned a trip to the doctor is a good idea. Good luck.

ok ok, thanks!
breathing: I'm quite sure I'm doing this right. If not for the heavy weights, then definitely for the push ups and chin ups...and they're warm-up kind of low intensity! how much lighter can it go?
I max at about 25, and would usually do 3x20reps (weighted) or something. but it hurts now even after 10 in a warm-up set.
Weight loss pills: Nope!
I'm really worried now, hearing about the doctor's visit and all
there's really no other reason?

Does this problem present itself when you exert yourself aerobically?

If not then I dare say it's related to the pressure.

Don't be upset about seeing a doctor! Even a super fit person needs to make sure they don't have underling issues that strenuous exercise could aggravate. :)

Check your diet and sleeping pattern. Are you getting enough sleep? What supplement are you taking? Caffeine? Stress?

I used to have that problem and somehow it just went away. The doctors told me to keep a journal of what I ate, drank, sleep, excercise, and when did those headachnes occur. Try to keep a detailed log as possible. Ya, also go see the doctors. They didn't help me much but they did give me clean slate of bill. Check your blood pressure and blood sugar level especially.

disclaimer, I am no doctor and my advice should not replace a medical professional. In other word, go see a doctor for safety.

Perhaps you are experiencing a neck pinch or spasm from the upper body motions ( from what you have said they are all upper body motions causing you troubles)? I used to get a ripping headache from neck spasms causing a nerve pinch up to the head, last thing I was thinking of was a neck problem when I was getting them. A few weeks of rest and then returning with very correct form and being sure to warm up the muscles with very light weights so they wouldn't spasm or tighten suddenly helped me out.

Could be worth a trip to a doctor though just to be safe. Make sure to be able to tell the doctor as much as possible about the type/location of headaches and if you get any nausea, blurry vision, dizziniess or anything like that along with them, that will help them a lot with finding the problem.

I had exactly the same problem.

I would be pretty confident in saying that it is a result of exteemely tight neck muscles which is causing the pain. I went and saw a Chiro who pointed this out, had a couple of masages and it went away. I make sure I give my neck a good stretch before lifting and have never had a problem since.

thanks, guys, for the great advice! I went to see a doctor and he says everything is fine. As expected, he just says monitor the problem, come back if it persists
Answering some of the questions: I dont get the headache with aerobic activities, even rather intensive ones. My sleeping patterns are still rather consistent, and I wouldnt consider the pass few days/weeks all that stressful.
I've tried to do more aerobic and abstain from weights, the last few days. Today when I did some, the headache still comes back, but since I stop once it gets a little too painful, it seemed to go away quickly and didnt hurt as much. I got some exercise done.
The neck spasm idea seems quite possible since it does seem like the lower part of my head some times. I'll try stretching more, and just...give it time?
thanks again everyone.

I’ll third what JTM and blackedout have said. I used to get headaches when lifting, and for about 30 minutes after. I thought it must have been a blood pressure thing but my doctor said that she thought it was a tightness around my back and neck muscles being too tight; the whole posterior chain links up to the top of your head and if it gets tight then it can cause head aches.
Try stretching and using a foam roller for a while, the problem doesn’t have to be in the neck, it could be further down your back
