Guideon's diary of change

London was great, really enjoyed it!
Now counting down to saturday, when I'm off to the states.

And today I set a big goal for myself, I preregistered for the Berlin Marathon 2014.
If I get drawn in, I'm gonna have a no trouble at all working out, my work-out schedule is pretty much set then to be able to finish the marathon.
Made this commitment together with someone else, if we both get in, there's no backing out of it (barring injuries off course).
If only one of makes the cut, we'll try to find another marathon round about the same time, but we're really hoping for Berlin.

(article written from a weightlifters point of view, but still very informative)

I guess I have endomorph body type.

some motivation to be sapped from this bit of text for all those endomorphs out there :) :
Once you know you are endomorph, you know that you were born this way. Your propensity to gain weight is in your genes. It’s not your fault that you gain weight easily. Once you understand that, you can stop blaming yourself for who you are and start educating yourself on how to maximize your body's potential.

As an endomorph, you may feel as though your body has let you down a little. It isn’t working as well as it should do in defending against weight gain. However, this doesn’t mean you are destined to be overweight or even obese. Your body’s internal weight regulatory systems may be short circuiting, but that doesn’t mean your head has to as well. Where your body falls short, your head should lead the way. In other words, you have to make a conscious, concerted effort to do the things your body should be doing for you automatically. If your body isn’t instinctively telling you to get moving, you have to make sure that exercise is part of your daily routine. If your metabolism is sluggish, you need to eat the right foods that will fire up your metabolism. To put it plain as day, you need to bust your ass by exercising and eating right for your body type.

Endomorphs don’t have to be fat. In fact, endomorphs shouldn’t even be fat. Female endomorphs who are in shape are simply stunning. J. LO, Scarlett Johansson, Beyonce, Raquel Welsh and Elizabeth Taylor all have endo bodies. Sure, ectomorphic women tend to look great with their clothes on and can wear almost any style of clothing (most "models"), while endomorphs are more restricted in their look (endomorphs do best in fitted clothes, which is the reason Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Scarlett Johansson, Kim Kardashian wear the clothes they do or design their own). However, I'm going to toss in my opinion that no ectomorph can beat an in-shape endomorph in swimwear or sports clothing. The ectomorph’s body lacks curves, while the endomorph’s body is all about the curves. It’s the reason that every pin-up has been an endomorph and not many have been an ectomorph. Your body doesn’t need clothes to look its best! In shape endomorphs look good naked!

So what’s my point? You are at a disadvantage in that you have to work harder that any of the other body types to control your body fat percentage but once you master this art your body can be incredibly spectacular.

Hi everyone, I'm back!
My trip was wonderful, really had a blast. NY was beautiful as ever, even though the weather wasn't great (bit it cleared up the last day to go do one of my favourite things in NY: just enjoy the view on top of the Rock).
Miami was really great as well, beautiful art deco district (if you ignore the loud bars and equally loud tourists on Ocean Drive :D)
We did a lot of walking and I even went for 4 runs on vacation, so I managed to loose weight on my trip.
Weigh in today: 195,8 :)

Only not so good thing: My checked bag is still somewhere in NY JFK, or hopefully on it's way over here.... :(

*woot*

Just got word they're gonna deliver my suitcase in a few hours.

Starting tomorrow I'm gonna do "Zuzka light" in the mornings.
I was less motivated before my trip to work out, but now I'm back in work out mode.
So really looking forward to see how that's gonna go!

Glad you had a good trip and they found your bag!

Hope you get back into a routine now that you are back :)

Not really getting into the correct sleeping patterns of this side of the ocean yet...
On the bright side, I'm watching one hell of a Sunday Night Football game :)

Pfft bad night's rest and lots of lugging stuff around at work ( depratment is moving a floor up) really wore me out today.
No workout today, too tired.
Going to bed early tonight, and get up early, getting that work out in in the morning.

Happy you’re back and that you had a blast! Good to hear your luggage will be arriving soon too. I’m going on a trip in March of next year and that’s one of my fears. I cannot – or should I say THEY cannot - lose my luggage!

Good luck getting back to your normal routine and sleep patterns. I’m sure it’ll take some time to readjust.

Thanks Mandy.

Slept really well last night, even overslept a bit :)
Also got some running in tonight, so settling back into normal routine again.

Last Saturday I went shopping again.
Fitted in (and bought) jeans in size 33, just one away from my goal size of 32 *excited*
Long way away from the size 42 I started with almost 4 years ago... :)

Congratulations Guideon! That is great. :)

I'm still struggling with size 46... I started on 50 though. I just hope part of the reason is that I have big hips...
Take care! :grouphug:

-(Edit)-

Well, I started to question whether the sizes may vary from country to country.
My 46 size pants here have around 38". My hip is around 40". So yeah, still struggling with those... :biggrinjester:

Look who's back?
Did you all miss me?

Been a long time since I've been here, so get ready for a little recap.
When I stopped posting here (which is around the end of November apparently) I was a happy camper, having left the 200's and never going back and stuff.
Well... turned out a bit different. In November I was away on "vacation" (which actually was a trip to organize a sports tournament, which is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun), and while on vacation I didn't have too much time to go running. Which wasn't that bad, seeing that we had to set up the whole venue of the tournament, which is old fashioned manual labor, and I had to patrol the courts everyday during the tournament, so I got my workouts in. But next to no running. Once back home I figured I could just put on the running shoes and pick up where I left off.
Not a good idea, my knees began to bother me in a 15k race in december. Did finish the race but my knees were not feeling good. Tried to rest them and don't go running too much, but they never felt better. So I went to a physical therapist, and it turned out I had Iliotibial band syndrome, or runner's knee. Bummer.
My first half marathon was scheduled to take place in march, so an injury was not very welcome.
Luckily it wasn't that bad and my PT let me run short distance and have me doing various strech exercises at home.
During the time I wasn't able to run as much because of the injury (which also included the holiday season by the way  ) I gained weight pretty fast, resulting in me weighing in at 213 lbs in the first few days of 2014 :cuss:

Took me about an month to let my knees get better
I had some weeks left before my HM and tried to build my training distance to a point where I would feel I would be able to finish the half marathon.

I got to that point just over a week before the race, so decided to go through with it.
So the day came I was gonna run a half marathon. I was in good company, my dad was gonna run the 10k race in the same event, and my sister would also be doing a HM (mind you, she's run a few before).
The first seven k's of the race my sis and i ran together, but after that she told me to go ahead (I'm a bit faster than she is, normally).
So from that point on I ran alone, and when I say ran alone I mean alone in a sea of people. I'm not sure how many participated in the HM, but it 's somewhere around 25.000 at least.
I began to feel tired after a while and the last two miles I hit the wall, the wall everybody talks about. My pace slowed by a full minute per km during the last few miles, but I kept a pretty good pace and at least I was able to still keep running. I passed quite a few people who were walking. I wouldn't let myself do that, even tough it sure was an inviting thought, to walk for a while. In the last mile I saw my dad among the spectators and that gave me a little bit of a boost. My sister was running a steady pace since I left her and wasn't that far behind anymore, without both of us knowing it, otherwise we would have finished together.
But I did finish. It was a great sight to see the finish line and finally cross it. My time was 1 hour 57 minutes en 15 sec. Secretly I was hoping for a sub-2hour time all along, but getting to the finish line was the main objective.
My sis finished only 15 secs behind me.

I was pretty content with my accomplishment and I should be, but let me tell you, the two days after the race my legs already started screaming whenever I came close to a staircase. Boy were they sore (taking walking like a pirate to a whole new level).

Since January I was able to loose 13 pounds and now I'm slaloming over and under the 200 lbs mark for the last few weeks.
I'm OK with that, I'm doing more weight training now and I'm getting ready to start training for my next goal: the marathon.

So that's where I am at now.
Hope to find some time the next few days to read up on your diaries.

stay strong my friends!

Welcome back and congrats on the half marathon! Hopefully you'll be able to keep your knee and the rest of your legs healthy and relatively pain free.

In any event, it's always nice to see folks come back so I hope you stick around.

Welcome back and awesome job on the HM!

I started running regularly in January and I've started a thread for the runners here. The link is below. Please stop in.

http://weight-loss.fitness.com/threads/61779-Run!

I have overdone it a bit for just starting out and I've been struggling with hip flexor pain on one side. I'm trying to make stretching a daily thing and make myself take breaks from running and take easy runs. I need to take my resting heart rate to get a better picture of what I am doing in terms of % HR, but with just the old 220-age MHR I've been trying to run most days at 85% max. As heavy as I am that is too much. I'm trying to make corrections, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Stick around Guideon! I look forward to hearing about your marathon training.

Q, that sounds familiar. I overdid it at the start as well, and to be quite honest I just learned a quite valuable lesson about running:
"There's no use to train hard, before you've mastered the art to run slow", meaning that variation is very important. I used to go full throttle every training, bu learned over the course of time that running slow is valuable to becoming faster. I do intervaltraining once a week now, a long slow run and a moderate run. Slow running was a real hurdle for me, I couldn't wrap my head around how that was helping me.
Full throttle is only for events now, and even then only runs up to 10k. I feel I haven't done enough longer distances to know what i can do on those.

If you're interested I can dig up some schedules I've gotten from other runners and the ones I used (need to translate them a bit tho, they're in dutch :p )

Variation is key. I feel that I would like to figure out the variation on my own. I appreciate the offer for a schedule, but I have seen some running schedules and my issue is that they are pretty generic. They are designed with an average sized person without injury in mind. I think now that I have variation and moderation in mind that I might benifit from finding my own way.

Weighed in under 200 lbs yesterday, after the last few were above.
198.6 lbs.
Hope I can get out of this plateau pretty soon
