Guideon's diary of change

That c25k program is very similar to something called "running with Evy" over here, just load the lessons (mp3 format) on your ipod or smartphone and "evy" will tell you what to do and what to look out for.

Very valuable those kinds of programs..
I started "running wild", just going as fast as I could, which was a mistake. That's just asking for injuries, luckily I had none. Now I'm doing a program desinged by polar based on the exercises I have been logging with my heartrate monitor for the past few months. Much better, I'm running at a more restrained pace (mainly by monitoring heartrate in stead off pace), working on building up to longer runs and working on speed as well. It's ok to go all out once in while (preferably during a race), but not every time you go out.

Oh yeah also signed up for a race in sept where lots of ppl of last week's race are also gonna be present, should be a blast

I leave for a bit and come back to find Superman. Where to start? Congratulations on <200 lbs, congrats on an awesome 5K time, and congrats on the 15K! You're a new man Guideon! You are a hell of an inspiration and I am super proud of you!

You're doing a great job Guideon. I've found the Heart Rate monitor to be an invaluable piece of exercise equipment. It really does a nice job of motivating you when you still have more to give and then letting you know when its okay to scale back and rest a bit.

As I'm now a year into having used it, to some extent I need it a little less because I can usually guess pretty well what it is just by how tired I feel. But I still use it for my solo runs, hikes and basketball. Will likely use it when I do more cycling as well. Other little pieces of equipment I've bought haven't been nearly as useful, but the Heart Rate monitor is aces.

brawny77 - LOL! I nearly died reading that!

You're doing so well, 15k is awesome!! One day I hope to have the time to do exactly what you're doing. Do you find your joints hurt at all from running outside?

Thanks everyone for the compliments, means a lot to me :beating:

Risty: No, fortunately not.
But I was fearing that, that is why I just now started running. I wanted to be right around the 200 lbs mark (well actually below, but I was getting impatient, so I started above it), to avoid impact-pain and injury on my joints. I would hate it if I started running and would have to stop not long after because of it.
So no negative effects on the joints. And I do think the right shoes do help a lot in that area. They weren't cheap, but it's worth it.
Off course there is soreness and DOMS, you wouldn't believe how I had to get up the stairs after the first times I was out running :p

Today I used my heartrate monitor on my (7th time) Level 30 day shred exercise
Low avg BPM: 90
Calories burnt: 133
This is what my heart rate monitor said about the exercise:
This training helped and speeded up your recovery from intense activity. This training intensity is recommended for recovery exercises throughout the training season, and it is suitable also for warm-up and cool-down. It can promote overall health and wellbeing.

sounds good :)

Seems like progress varies from fast to slow. I think you are doing well. An injury could really set you back. Better to keep slow progress!

Yeah, that's why I started running in moderate heart rate zones, easier on the body. I'll be winding down in a couple of weeks, running-wise, getting ready for a hiking trip with my dad. So looking forward to that, hiking up some Bavarian Alps, enjoying the views and the occasional beer or two in the evening :)

DOMS? What is that?

How did you have to get up those stairs?? lol

This was posted in another forum.... since you run I thought you might enjoy this comic! I think most people trying to lose weight would understand most of this anyhow!

Ugh being forced to rest is never great. Try to enjoy it :) hope you feel better soon.

Risty i read that comic. Made me laugh.

DOMS is Delayed onset muscle soreness, which really is a fancy name for sore muscles after workouts.

for the stairs bit: I must have looked like a pirate with two wooden legs :p.

Saw that comic also on my newsfeed on FB, really recognizable :)

OHHHH, yeah I get that. I get the most sore 2 days after a workout!

LOL... I'm sure I've looked like a pirate before... either that or a 90 year old trying to hobble around!

So I decided to not do my planned interval run tomorrow.
I didn't have to much discomfort in my legs during 30 day shred today, but still I think it's better to give it a rest.
I might see how it feels on the bike tomorrow.
gotta get some exercise in before the weekend. It's "kermis" here in town (Tilburg), which is kind of like a state fair for the Americans and a funfair for the Brits.
It's a 10 day event, and I spent most of that time at my favorite pub (yes the "kermis" is smack bang in the citycenter), sitting outside drinking copious amounts of beer and watching the people going by. It's great, but as you can imagine not very good for the whole weight loss thing. So hopefully my legs will be better this weekend so I can squeeze in a run somewhere.

For some more funfacts on the "kermis" keep reading:
*It's spaced out over 3 km's in the city center
*There's over 200 rides, foodstands etc in all
*There will be somewhere around 1,5 million visitors during these ten days
*Monday is called "roze Maandag" which translates to Pink Monday, the biggest gay event in the Netherlands. It started as a joke some 20 years ago, the monday was the dullest day of the "kermis" and for fun an editor of a gay-paper advertised this day as a day for gays. Now each year there's more than 300.000 visitors on "Roze maandag".
Most of those visitors are not gay mind you, they just come to watch and have a fun day. It's a great day.

Bet you didn't knew that huh? :p

I hope your legs are feeling better today. I also hope you enjoy kermis. It does sound like a lot of fun. Our fair season where I live starts in a couple of months. There's one fair that I go to every year. It's the best fair around. I never really buy anything, but it's nice to just walk around and see the horses and other events. And of course, that diet goes out the window! I LOVE fried dough and always get some along with some vinegar French fries. :)
