I'm Brian, I'm 26 years old, married with a beautiful daughter, and I want to live to see her grow up.

I currently weigh 315 lbs (but "I carry it well"), and I'd like to eventually get down to 220... but for now, I'm shooting for 270.

I live across the parking lot from my apartment complex's gym, which I can get into 24/7. It's nothing special, but I can watch a movie and do elliptical or walk on a treadmill. There are some other machines, but I'm going to stick to cardio for now.

My main problems are that I have some serious self-discipline issues, so I'll do really well on a diet and exercise plan for a few weeks, but it'll suddenly collapse because I'm sick of writing stuff down or I just don't feel like going to the gym. I usually eat pretty healthily, but I just eat too much of it. If there are good savory snacks in the house, it can lead to me binging.

I cook dinner every night for my family (I love to cook... I love food), so I have control over my dinners, which is a great thing... and a bad thing.

Besides my weight-loss goals... I love playing guitar, reading, playing video games, and even the occasional non-sedentary activity like judo or a team sport.

I'm not sure where to start this time... but I'm doing the weekly shopping trip tomorrow, so that might be a good place to start. :)

I know lots of things about diet, exercise, and motivation. What I am looking for most from this forum is a support network and maybe something to hold me accountable. Maybe I can partner up with a couple newbies on here and we can support each other. :)

Anyway... hi!

hiya, I think a lot of us on here know how you feel about the self discipline changing often a lifelong habit is a bitch (I've only just been doing it for 3 months)

I just think the benefits outweigh the negatives right? and some of the before and after shots on here are so inspirational its amazing!

good luck and I'm sure you'll find the support on here you need, I find keeping a daily LiveJournal of what I eat and the exercise etc works well and my friends (or other people on here who have joined LJ) can comment and hold me accountable for my actions

windspirit1333 is my username on there in case you feel like joining!

I used to have a LJ account. Then I started trying to have my blog on my personal website... but LJ has way more tools to make updating easier. I might have to switch back. :)

Welcome, SakanaUshi!

I have the same motivation that you do. I want to live to see my daughter grow up.

There is a diary thread on this site where you can log your progress. I started one and I hope to update it regularly.

I also have started a blog on blogspot, although that one also will deal with things other than weight loss.

I wish you success, and hope you find support and inspiration here to help you reach your goal.

Your ticker looks like mine should, Cord. I'm adjusting my goal to 200 lbs. That's an ideal weight for someone with my build, I think. I'm told it's still technically "overweight", but I'll get my BMI tested when I get close to that point and then we'll see.

114 lb.... Even assuming I will maintain a steady pace for weight loss with no plateaus or bad weeks, we're talking probably 18 months, give or take. I'm not going to worry too much about the timeline, though, cuz I've been fat since 3rd grade... it took me decades to get this fat, and I accept that it might take a year or two to undo it. *steels himself for it*

Some disturbing math: 114lb * 3,500 calories = 399,000 total calories. That's a whole lot of Doritos....
