grip strengthning

What can I do to strengthen my grip? I know there are excercises for wrists & forearms, but i'm not sure how this affects overall grip. It's especially frustrating when doing deadlifts or shrugs, where I have a heavy weight hanging from my arms & even though I know I can do more reps my grip fails me and I have to stop short. Any help is appreciated
 
Towel hangs, wrist curls will help but I have found the most benificial thing I ever did for my grip was do hammer grip pull ups with my gym towel over the smith machine bar.
 
This is an old rock climbers trick. Take two 10 lb plates. Squeeze them together in one hand side by side (like a sandwich) and walk around the room. When they fall from your grip, the sets over. If 10's are too easy, move up to 25's.
