Got a blender for my birthday, tips?

Hey guys,

For my 19th my father got me a blender, for health reasons indeed. Any recommended fruit smoothies? Protein shakes? I'm only a newbie but today I made my first one; just simple one banana and a glass of skim milk and some ice, and it's delicious. :)

Any recommendations for both protein shakes and fruit smoothies would be highly appreciative.

I drink a smoothie every morning for breakfast.

It contains the following:

1 scoop of whey protein, chocolate
1/2 cup of fat free milk
1/2 cup of fat free plain yogurt
30 grams of natural peanut butter
1 tbspn of Udo's Oil
1 whole frozen banana

It's yummy. Sometimes I throw some dry oats in there too.

I don't. I eat a bunch of fruit throughout the day and this I've found to be the best combo in terms of taste for me. But that by no means you couldn't add whatever you like.

That sounds nice, Steve! Where do I buy protein ingredients from? Local supermarkets? (Very stupid question!)

You can go to something like Vitamin Shoppe or GNC. Any whey will suffice. I like the brand name, ON.

There a bunch of websites that sell it too, which I've used. Stuff like proteinfactory.com or bodybuilding.com

I had finally perfected my recipe last semester, but then my blender broke. So this is what I think it was:

1 scoop whey protein, vanilla ice cream
15 frozen strawberries (whole berries, no sugar added)
6 oz grape juice
1 medium banana

I'll usually add a little water or more grape juice after I've started blending it if the consistency is too thick.

I got my whey online at amazon. I priced around and at the time they had a really good deal and free shipping.

1 C 1% milk
1 C frozen raspberries, or 1/2C raspberries and 1/2 C banana, or a couple or strawberries and some peaches, or whatever fruit you have / like
1 Tbl ground flax

Is there any way to make a protein shake without the powder? My GMC is so far away. I was thinking of blending up oatmeal and chocolate powder and milk or something. Maybe some peanut butter with it. Any ideas?

Every morning I have a green smoothie.

2 types of fruit (one should be a banana as it works well)
Some leafy green veggies (kale, spinich)
Water (and milk if you want)
Oatmeal - dry
Flaxseed (optional)
Ice

No measurements, I just throw it all in there. I think if I missed a day of my green smoothie, I'd go mad.

enjoy your blender.

this is going to sound like a really stupid question, but do the protein powders add taste? i'd like to find something that doesn't really add taste

I have a blender but the husbad wont allow me near it *sigh*
I did find some cool things to do with it (which may or may not be related to why im not allowed to touch ours)

Some protein powders taste like feet, others taste like ass, others have a delightful chalk-like taste and others have a strange after taste that Ic an't quite figure out what it is...

Protein powders do add taste -and can come in flavors like chocolate/vanilla/strawberry or plain... experiment with some sample sizes or go to places like Jamba Juice or other fruit smoothie places that have protien powders and experiment with the flavors..

I add non-fat yoghurt to my smoothies, which adds some protein--not massive amounts, but it helps.

Started with smoothies a few weeks ago

I finally started using a blender a few weeks ago that I'd had for years. Its great.

My usual in the morning is

200 ml water
vanilla protein powder (about 25g of protein worth)
15 ml fibre supplement
15 ml flax oil

mix this

then add a handful of ice cubes

mix this

then add 1 cup partially defrosted frozen berries (I buy a big bag at the grocery store)
and half a frozen banana

Tastes great and gives a lot of things you need

I saw this thread, and wanted to add my own contribution. :)

I love smoothies myself, but have never tried the green varieties that I've seen here, so I think I might (just have to buy some fresh spinach).

This is a smoothie combination I really like:

8oz juice (orange, apple, or whatever is on sale; I've been using Kern's Strawberry banana nectar recently)
8oz plain non fat yogurt (I make my own at home, so always have plenty of that, and I'm always looking for ways to use up what I have so I can make a fresh batch)
1 banana (frozen or unfrozen, doesn't matter)
2 large strawberries
5 or 6 raspberries
1 carrot, topped, tailed and peeled, and broken in half (especially if your blender is old and funky like mine is)
Ice (optional)

Put the juice and the carrot in first, and blend that well on the highest setting (liquefy? frappe?) to grind the carrot up small.

Add the other ingredients, blending well. (Add more or less liquid to alter thickness.)

Add the ice, if you desire ice (three or four cubes works for me, if I even bother).

Pour into glass and enjoy.

OK...this may sound gross to some people but I absolutey could not live without it. One of the ways I have gotten so big is that I am such a coffee hound.....I love coffee!!! But I like it sweeeeetttt! Lots of sugar. I am from the south after all and I like my coffee just like I like my iced tea. Now I can drink sweet & low or splenda in my iced tea, but something happens to it when it gets hot. It tastes like ass. :puke:
So I drink my coffee cold. Now If I am going to drink it cold, I want it like a mocha coffee thing. So in my blender goes a bunch of crushed ice. Then a heaping teaspoon of instant coffee and a heaping teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa baking powder and about 6 packages of sweet & low. Cover with water and blend. Pour in a glass with a straw and pretend you paid $5 for it at Joe Muggs or Starbucks. I love them! And no guilt!! Drink them aaalllll the time!!
