Good Idea?

I recently started playing quarterback for a local team and someone at practice said that i should hold a light dumbell and go through the throwing motion to strengthen my shoulder and give me a longer throw. Do you think this is a good idea because I would of thought that it would be a good way to get a shoulder injury:confused:

What do you think?

He said to use a 2-3kg dumbell although the lightest weight i've got is 4kg as I have Olympic dumbell handles. So do you think its a good idea?

No. Not a good idea. People seem to think if they mimic a sport skill with more weight it is a good thing. But that will only increase the potential for injury and have little or no effect on your throw.

Throwing is a skill. You practice that skill in order to get better at it.

You do regular strength training to strengthen the muscles used and increase the potential to of increasing performance.

Throwing comes from the hips and torso. A 50 yard quality throw does not come from the arm but the rest of the body.

yeah, some rotation work to mimic the throwing motion with the hips and all. And strenghten the rotator cuffs, they are always prone to injury when throwing alot.

Thanks for the advice:)

My QB coach has told me that the main power comes from the legs and torso as well as getting perfect technique although he was not at practice today so I thought I would ask on here.

So if I work on technique I will get a better throw but what are the main exercises for strengthening the muscles used? Shoulder press, Lateral raises, Russian twists, etc?
