Getting nowhere.

I am currently a 19 year old male who is 6'1" & approx. 170. I am pretty skinny all around with a bit of a gut. i would really appreciate any advice. Over the past few years, I have tried constantly to gain weight/muscle mass. I played football in high school and that consisted of weight training 3-4 days a week. I am now a sophomore in college and still struggling to add something on, while losing the gut. I'm stuck in a battle because if I run and eat less, I won't put on anything. And if I eat and lift...nothing. I can't seem to get results through anything. What can I do to finally see results? What kind of workout routine do you recommend? Full body workouts or certain areas on certain days? How much cardio? What and how much to eat? Is there anyone else who has been through a similar struggle? I feel like I've been working at it a while with no results. I'm guessing maybe I'm doing something wrong or just don't know enough about fitness. My usual routine is a full body workout 3 days a week with a jog on the off days. Again, any help/advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Pick your battles. Significant fat loss requires a calorie deficit, significant muscle gains require a calorie surplus. You're spinning your wheels most likely because you're trying to serve two opposing masters. Pick one and work at it for several months, then work on the other for several months.

I'd be aiming to hit each muscle group/bodypart at least twice a week, so a fullbody routine 3 days a week, or an upper/lower 2x/wk (4 days total) would be high on my list of recommendations. Make sure that you're not neglecting anything, as weakness in one area can cause a stall in several areas. For example, if you don't train your back properly, you won't be able to support enough weight to sufficiently train your legs, chest and shoulders.
