Getting Functionally Fit

thanks Kim, indeed, i have already dropped those pounds this morning, lol. at 422.4, new low, looks like maybe right back on track with more weight loss. really though, i dont know what to think yet. going to stick steady with what im doing, and in another week or so, maybe I will have to adjust my calories upwards if my weight loss doesnt become a little more steady and healthy. Since Im going to need to be in a deficit for almost 2 years, i think that it could be possible to down-regulate my metabolism if i kept my calories too low for that long.

which reminds me, i need some info on the topic of refeeds, zig-zags, etc. honestly, ive never been lean enough to need them, so i never learned about them, but I would like to get an idea of what they are and what they do to benefit now, so i can effectively use them down the road. If anyone has any good source of information, or wants to post some of their own info, i would much appreciate it, thanks.

Hi, Coach. Talk to Steve about refeeds and zigzag dieting. He's a pro at that, since he's never had the kind of weight problem we do.

Edit: not that he's not a pro at our weight problems, too -- it's just that he's never personally experienced obesity.

If Steve is such a said expert, and I dont doubt at all that he is, hopefully he will drop off some info sometime when he has a few spare moments, lol.

pretty friggin excited today, Supertraining came in already, and I plan on starting it tonight once the day winds down a bit.

Also, I got in a good amount of exercise today helping my uncle clear out his store room and move his stuff back to his house. that took about 4 hours, and included moving some 600 pound saws and equipment, and lots of stacks of tiling, laminate, and other various construction related things. good amount of work, and it feels good to be active.

and as a reminder to myself, i need to take my own advice and pick up a pair of walking/running shoes. If i am going to start doing cardio and the like soon here, I am going to need new shoes, or else I am going to be in quite a bit of pain from the junk ive got right now. friggin feet pronate like crazy in these shoes, cardio will destroy my feet, legs, and back like that. however, the local high school did just get a brand new artificial grass (not the same as astro turf) football field and all weather track, I could probably go walk around on the field in bare feet and get good exercise that way. and it would be easy to know how far i went if walking on a football field, lol.

420.6 this morning, which means i am less than a pound away from the halfway mark in progress goal #1. Not much else to report besides that, well, and that I've dropped around 8 pounds in the first week of the june 2 pounds a week challenge, lol.

Sounds like you're doing really terrific Coach. And you're right about shoes. I get new ones every 3 months, since the last thing I want to do is get plantar fasciitis ever again.

i read something recently that every 250 - 300 miles you should replace your shoes, but i think if you're heavier, that number probably drops some... my current sneakers have about 250 miles on them and they definitely need replacing and they're just over a month old...

get two pairs of the same shoe and alternate them...

ive been trying to do some research on specialty shoes, as i need a good pair of extra wide running or walking shoes for my pronation problems. my feet are only about a 13/14 (US) in length, but they are as wide as 15/16 or even larger. which means most shoes only add to the pronating problem by not supporting the outer foot enough. but i really cant afford to be spending very much on shoes often. does anyone know of any good places to find extra wide shoes at an affordable price? Most of the shoes we work with through my track team end up being spikes, flats, or some other specialty shoe that wouldnt really be good for everyday walking and running. and they end up being fairly pricey too.

thanks Kim, appreciate you stopping by.

havent been around much myself the last couple of days. and i havent been eating as frequently throughout the day. which is ok, because im still staying within my calorie range, and keeping my macros right on target. ive just found myself in a few instances where i ate a few less meals, but they were a bit bigger than they have been. not supposed to be anything wrong with that though, so like i said, no worries, lol. as long as it isnt a sign im slipping back into old habits. which i dont think it is. because i dont want to go back to those old habits.

i have lost some of that feel good feeling though. i think its mostly because i am taking forever to kick this sickness. for a couple of days, i was really under the weather, nasty fever, aches and pains all over, cold chills while sweating, etc. i kicked that in a couple of days or so, but now i am just severely congested in the chest and sinus. so much so that my ears are plugged and i have lost some of my hearing. really friggin annoying! cant breathe right so the few times ive gone out and done some physical activity, i feel like crap cuz i cant get enough oxygen. ugh, im just sick of being congested, and the doctor says sometimes the congestion can last up to 2 weeks after the initial sickness. once it is gone though, i think i will be back to feeling like i am on top of the world again. at least i hope so, because thats been a good motivator.

well, at this point life has slowed down quite a bit. pretty much done substituting, and track season is over. I will make enough from my coaching check to cover all my expenses this summer, so technically, i dont even need to get a job. though i would like one because its extra money to help me get ahead of myself. what am i most concerned with though, is if having the time off would be best mentally and physically concerning what i am trying to do here. not many people get a chance to focus purely on their health and wellbeing, and i think i might be able to take advantage of this free period to do just that. perhaps i will just get a part time job, something not too stressful or demanding. maybe something with short hours and some physical labor. i could always go back to old navy outlet as a stock associate. 4 hour shifts, decent amount of physical activity, and a bit of extra cash. guess i have some thinking to do...

Hi Coach, sorry you're not feeling very well. I hope you get over it really soon. I HATE being sick!

I hope u get better soon. With summer kicking in, do drink lots of water ya!
Yea... take the chance to focus purely on your health now while you can. Tho extra cash sounds nice and a little work helps log in that bit of extra activity. Whatever it is... Have a great summer! :)

I know this will sound crazy, but after years of buying expensive sneakers, I found that the cheap gym shoes they sell at KMart come in wide sizes like dress shoes and last me about 3 times as long as Nikes. You may want to give that a shot.

Good thing that you can walk. Im with Mal on the shoes thing though. Ive often read having 2 pairs and taking alternate days also. Apparently the impact on the soles is bad and you should leave them a day after using them so they can go back into shape (or some such crap similar)
Take care of your feet, they are carrying a hell of a load there :)

hey guys, thanks for taking the time to come by...

last 4 days have been kinda crappy. weight has stalled, i believe due to water retention issues. and now i seem to be developing some sort of lump or swell under my right jaw near the ear. just not getting healthier for some reason.

still been eating right on, no problems with binging and whatnot. defeated more than one temptation, and am ready to take on the test that comes this weekend. i just hope i am feeling better so i can enjoy our camping trip. and even more so, i want to feel better so i can start really exercising and start getting back into shape.

i am also due for another weekly evaluation, but it is late, and i am tired, so that will have to wait for the morning.

eek a lump isnt good. Make sure you get it seen to if its too big. Could be one of those skin infection thingees that make you feel like crap for weeks.

I would have that checked by a doctor. One time I had this sore lump on the back of my head. I was frightened just cuz I'm the paranoid type when it comes to my health, but it turned out to be an infected hair follicle, of all things, and went away with antibiotics.

Its OK if your weight stalls here and there, and little health issues crop up, but the bottom line is that you were halfway to 500 lbs, and had you continued on it is likely you would've seen that unhealthy number, BUT NOW you are VERY CLOSE to being in the 300s. That is so exciting!

What is different about this time Coach? How will you harness the level and length of commitment that is needed to do this? I know you've thought this over so I was just wondering.

sounds like you've got swollen lymph nodes which would be anything from tonsilitis, ordinary cold, mono, to something more serious. get your butt to a doctor - pronto...

Hey Coach, just adding to the chorus: please, please don't put it off...it's time for a visit to the doc's asap
