Frustrated

Hi Everyone! Just joined and wanted to let you know a little about me......I'm a 44 yr old female...married 24 yrs...son 22, daughter 20! Have always been thin until I quit smoking 3 1/2 years ago. Also I am pre-menopausal. Not overweight but uncomfortable in my skin. I am 5"2 and now weigh 133 lbs. I am not a big eater...sometimes find it hard to get enough food in. I've just started working out on treadmill...20-30 min in the morning and again before dinner..lost 2.5 lbs the first week and have stayed the same for 2 weeks now. Is it just muscle gain or do I need to eat more/less. How long should someone try before getting frustrated?? I want to get to 120 lbs by May!

Go for it!

Not eating the correct amount of food can be almost as bad as eating too much. You need to train yourself to eat enough to sustain you. Make a commitment to the clock to eat SOMETHING at regular hours. Whether it be small meals every three hours (which I recommend) or 3 medium sized meals. Take time to eat. Which also means don't rush while eating. Allow your food to digest.

Everyone gets frustrated. And its fair to re-evaluate. Consult a doctor or physical trainer if you have questions about what you're doing.

Welcome here Suzy Q! I agree with the above poster...you need to make sure you're eating enough. I would suggest you start a journal, and keep track of your food intake/calories. It really is the best way. Keep it at home if you want, but if you start one here, we can help you figure things out. :)

Welcome to the board Suzy-Q!

Grats on quiting smoking! I know that its hard, and the weight gain is unwelcome, but the health risks of smoking out weigh those negatives.

Thanks for the advice!! I will keep a journal of food/calorie intake. It is difficult for me to eat every 3 hours or so because of work but I have been eating 3 meals, watching my portion size. I am also going to try just exercising on the treadmill in the mornings... Someone mentioned I may be burning more calories than I need too? I had surgery on my elbow in July so I can't really weight train right now or maybe never. I know that helps but what can you do!! lol I guess getting frustrated at 3 weeks in is stupid but I've never had to do this and not sure what to expect. I'm just going to chug along and see how it goes. :D

Like the other said, look at your diet. As you eat less, make sure you're eating better food so you don't become deficient in nutrients which can throw your body into "starvation mode."

What kind of pace are you doing on the treadmill? Are you doing interval training at all to work your heart? This can also boost your results.

You said you hurt your elbow and weight lifting may be out of the question. On the contrary, it may be just what you need. I would consult with a physical therapist about your situation as training with light weights can rehabilitate that joint by strengthening ligaments, tendons, and the supporting muscle structure. It'll be a slow road but it's better being at 90% of your previous strength than 40%. I injured my right rotator cuff about 3 years ago and I let it slide as after a month or two it felt ok, but as I was in a band lugging around guitar amps every other weekend in Hollywood and playing guitar, it was definitely not worth skipping proper rehabilitation for so long.

Thanks! Actually I am seeing a physiotherapist and have been for almost 1.5 years. I do work out with light weights,(I use to workout with the total gym but can no longer use it...thats what I meant when I said can't weight train) and was actually thinking of joining curves b/c I heard their machines can be slightly adjusted. I work out at about 3.8-4.8 on the treadmill and mix up the program during the week. Yes, I do interval training as well. Also I am eating better than I ever have, lots of veggies and fruit, salmon at lunch everyday etc....is it possible my body is still holding on to all food?? (Starvation mode???) I only want to lose about 13 lbs but would like it gone by May!!
