you know how when u start working out.. u notice a little change in ur body.. maybe u lost an inch and that keeps you motivated.. ive been working out an HOUR EVERYDAY for a MONTH and i do not notice a thing! not a thing! ive been eating really well too.. im so frustrated and unmotivated... i just wanna give up..

why am i not seeing even the slightest bit of results.. im 5'4 139lbs .. i dont expect to drop 20 lbs in the first month but cmon.. at LEAST an inch or so?

-Sarah :(

Aww girl, I know how you feel. I was going through a bit of that today. I know I'll probably get a few angry responses to this, but the way I break through something like that really is to lower my carbs for a couple of days until I start seeing/feeling a difference again.

You're doing awesome and you look HOT, girl. So keep it up, your hard work will definitely pay off! Keep your chin up :jump:

This is a very common tale, I say this as to give you hope;)
List the following.
-Stats (age, height, weight, Body fat %)
-Diet (in detail meal to meal, overall daily caloric intake, ratios)
-Exercise routine in detail (cardio/weight training)

Not uncommon

For a number of reasons.

I have lost over 50 pounds yet when I look in the mirror I see no difference. Purely in my head I know. Luckily the belt measurement doesnt lie. Scale and mirrors are completely subjective. This is an all too common occurence and should not make you feel down. Have you taken measurements recently?

As someone else said, you are already a hot looking woman. You really dont have far to go to get to your goal. At this point you may be making subtle little changes that arent so easily visible (armpits, toefat, back of the knees, inbetween the shoulder blades...). It is pretty common knowledge that the closer you get to your goal the harder it becomes to see the differences that are happening. I remember looking at your "before" pics and they looked like most peoples dream "after" pics. May take some time to see some changes on that already great looking bod. May also simply be a plateau, happens to the best of us. Nothing to do but keep going and be patient. Giving up now would be a terrible mistake. Dont let simple vanity destroy your best efforts.

I know it is frustrating, but stick to your guns. You may well be making big changes, just in places you arent regularly measuring or seeing. How are you feeling? That should be more important in the long run. As I said earlier, even after 53 pounds I dont "see" a difference yet at all, but damn do I feel it. Thats worth more than looks to me anyday.

thanks for the responses! and i havent taken measurements.. i just kinda try to tell by the way my clothes are fitting.. and there is no difference yet! it cant be a plateau because i havent even STARTED losing weight lol

im 5'4, 139 lbs, 22% body fat (around there)
i workout for an hour a day on my elliptical, weights and abs almost every other day..
i dont have a daily routine for eating.. i just try to keep the calories below 1200.. most days my caloric intake is around 900-1000..

so thats about it!

Anyway.. If I remember, you're already in pretty decent shape. You wanted to be the Britney look-a-like right?

You're gonna really need to watch what your eating and up your excerise. A month isn't exactly alot of time anyway. You're at that point were its gonna be ridiculously hard to lose weight.

Check out Steve's Diary "Journey, not a Destination".

The first few pages, another young lady had the same exact problem as you did. I'm not sure how it ended out (didn't read the whole thing yet :D) but i'm sure you can find some great advice there.

Best of luck.

hmmm... sounds pretty solid... how's your fluid intake? Maybe try upping your water a little bit sometimes that can get the ball rolling at least shedding some water weight and getting your body into the right direction. Like someone else said, you're real close to your goal weight so it's a little bit harder, as I'm sure you know. Maybe you just have to bust through by working out EXTRA hard for a week. If you really push yourself, that may get the ball rolling tooo... Just tryin to help!

Hi Sarah,

I had the same problem but noticed that my workout on the elliptical machine was not pushing me hard enough. After I increased the resistance level of my interval program, the weight loss increased significantly.

What program and resistance level do you use on the elliptical machine? It is really challenging you? More important do you increase your workout levels now and then?

For me using the elliptical is: no (mental) pain = no gain (actually no weight loss). At this moment, resistance level 13 on my Schwinn elliptical Interval program for 45 minutes with 68 rpm is my limit and after the workout my upper legs burn. Next week, I add 5 minutes.

Although I am eating very healthy within my calorie limits, without a good workout 5 times a week, I hardly loose weight.

by the end of my workouts im sweating and breathing somewhat heavy.. but i dont go to the point where im going to pass out.. i dont think i could do an hour a day if i did that..michael thurmond said its about keeping your heart rate up for a long time.. not about getting it beating really hard for a shorter period of time..

taking pictures motivates me, frusteration motivates me too!

i take pictures and weigh myself once a week... so comparing that helps me a lot!

if i start feeling i'm not losing anything i'll up my workout a lil bit!

I would suggest buying a hear rate monitor. They are pretty handy and keep reminding you if you fall out of your target heart rate zone. You can also make sure you are doing the right intensity for what you want to archive.

i know exactl how yu feel
i was the same way and what i found my first time around was that figuring out my bmr and really strictly monitoring my calorie intake based on that number was the most effective method... stay strong, dont give up!!

Maybe you can change your routine-forget the elliptical do something else it could really get things going-You can also try working out harder on the machine-you dont have to feel like your going to pass out but that pain is what some of those people we see with hot bodies go throught to get and maintain their bodies.

Its not unusual for it to be hard to get the ball rolling really.

From what you've said, the amount your eating seems to stand out the most, with all that exercise you need to eat more - i know it sounds silly but your body needs it, you'll probably find that your RMR is higher than what you're currently eating let alone what your burning off.

Also with exercise you need to be taking in more fluids, keeping intake up will help flush the system so to speak.

Don't get downhearted as it will happen eventually, keep up the good work.

(and by the way, you look gorgeous;))

just my two cents

you probably do look better, you're just critical of yourself and haven't noticed. try taking before/after pictures.

also..ditch the elliptical! You know how it feels quite a bit easier than other forms of exercising (ie: running)?...because it is. Even my personal trainer at my gym told me that the elliptical machines tell you you've burned twice the calories than you actually have!!

Now, if its an elliptical that you own, in your own house, then by all means, keep doing it. its way easier to get motivated when its that easy to access. However, if you're going to the gym, try mixing it up with the treadmill/bike/lunges..etc.

keep it up! good work.

I second this...900-1000 calories is WAY too low for your height and activity level, no wonder you're not losing any weight! Most health experts strongly advise against eating fewer than 1200 calories per day because not only is it unhealthy, it can cause your metabolism to slow down. I'm 5'8 and I've managed to lose weight by eating 2000-2200 calories a day; for your height and weight, I'm guessing you should be eating about 1500 cals a day for weight loss.

I'd suggest first of all determining the appropriate number of calories you need to maintain your weight, and then shaving off 250-500 calories off that figure. is pretty good and it actually gives you different ranges for maintenance and fat loss. Good luck!

This things happen, dont throw the towel yet, maybe take 3 days off, you have hit a plateau. This happens when the body gets used to whatever you are doing it. Trick your body for 3-4 days, eat more calories and DO NOT exercise. It works believe me!!!!!!!!!

Your body is absolutely starving. No one should cut to 900 calories, it's not healthy and it actually poses a pretty big health hazzard. Cutting too many calories will throw you into starvation mode, which is when your body will do what it's designed to do, and that is to hang on to the fat that you currently have. You need to eat about 500-1000 calories less than what your body needs to maintain weight. 500 calorie deficit per day equals about 1 lbs loss per week, and that 500 calorie deficit can come from you eating less, or doing more exercise, or even better, a combination of both. If you're not sure about the amount of calories your body needs to maintain your current weight, you can do what I did. I went to my local gym and had a "Med-gym" done, now it may have other names, but basically you wake up first thing in the morning, you eat or drink nothing, you go to the gym and you breathe into a device for 10mins which measures your oxygen consumption, and after 10min, the device will show how many calories your body burns in a RESTED state, basically by just breathing and functioning. Mine was at 2600 cals, and with my exercise plan and diet, they told me that I need 3300 cals per day to maintain my weight. Try it out, it'll help ya out.
