From alpha testing to the QUERCUS 200

A side note: Being vegan has meant almost no eating out in town where my wife and I live and work. We were eating vietnamese and one meal via a salad bar. the salad did not agree with me and the Vietnamese place failed their health inspection.

Did you know this place failed its health inspection before or after you decided to eat there? Pleeeeease say "after."

I've eaten there ever since it opened and it's always been a little sketchy. We haven't been since we found out about the fail, but we did go once before we found out but after they reopened. We went there one evening and they had a sign on the door saying they were closed for a private party. I'm guessing that was a lets clean up the rat turds party so the health inspector will let us reopen.

They literally had 2 vegan options, so we were about burned out on them anyway. We never got sick from there at least. The whole vegan part might have helped us there. I imagine it's a lot harder to spoil tofu than say the shrimp or mussels that they serve.

To say that the dining options are poor locally would be an understatement. Even at full omnivory there are scant options for even a decent meal. Go vegan and it's flunky Vietnamese or salad bar. I'm hoping that being reduced to eating out only when we visit a city will increase how often we get away.

One of my size 40 jeans are ridiculously big now. I didn't wear a belt today and I'm having to constantly hitch them up. They need to be retired. I was hoping to replace them first. Also, they are really comfortable to sit around in. I'm torn between reducing my biggest jeans as possible and wanting to keep comfy and pretty new jeans. I'm happy to have this problem so don't think I'm whining.

The last pair I got into are snug in the thighs and a bit loose in the waist. By the time they fit in the legs they will be way too big in the waist. Levi straight fit are not the cut for me. I have a pair of jeans that I like very much that should fit soon. I look forward to them especially since my old favorite jeans are retired.

I used my inhaler as I started running and I think that raised my hr. I didn't feel like I was overdoing it. My back hurt a little tonight before the run, but it feel okay at the moment.

The back is feeling fine this morning. I'm only counting changes in my belly measurement by the half inch because I figure there is some variability. I did however measure at 52.8" this morning, so hopefully before too long I'll be down another half inch.

Positives:

Very slow fat loss should help reduce the occurrence of extra skin.

I don't even consider not exercising each day and for the past 18 days it has been a run every night.

I am pretty confident that I can run a 5K race any time I want without it disrupting my run schedule.

I'm enjoying being vegan and not drinking and it's saving us money as well.

Things I need to work on:

I need to watch my calories more closely. I've tended to overeat at night a bit lately. I get rather hungry after my run. I bought a large bag of organic carrots and other veggies while not buying high calorie snack food like chips and nuts last night so that's a step in the right direction.

I need to cook more and rely less on convenience food. It's easy to get used to microwaved veggie patties or vegan burrittos, but they are more processed and less healthy than whole foods.

I need to give up diet soda and especially the sugar free energy drinks. I'm working hard to be healthy and drinking god awful crap. I still have black coffee, teas, and juices to satisfy caffeine and taste. I know drinking artificial sweetener makes me crave real sugar and other simple carbs like bread and it also affects the appetite similarly to sugar.

I need to do more housework and less sitting on my butt in the evenings. I've used my daily runs to justify my sedentary time afterwards. There is nothing wrong with down time, but I need to keep it reasonable. I should also shift more towards reading and drawing and less computer and TV.

I love seeing your enthusiasm to keep improving your lifestyle Q. I have to go back to being determined & to keep moving forward with positive changes to my lifestyle & diet. I have turned to crap food lately & it makes you feel much worse. Our health is our wealth. Thanks for being so thoughtful & supportive in my diary xo Cate

love reading this after updating mine in the evening :) very inspirational. Nuts are ok by the way especially after exercise like a run or a workout. Were con'd into thinking that all fat is bad for you these days and that is not the case, the fat in nuts is very good for you and the protein is excellent. grabbing a bag of mixed nuts/seeds when your next at the shop will fill you up and there surprisingly tasty for those late night cravings :)
Also avoid processed foods like the plague, full of rubbish that's toxic to your body and slows down your weight loss by over 40% Anything canned, in plastic or vacuum packed has usually seen a preservative more than once. I made the mistake of having a pizza bought for me this week and i almost cried when i saw the calories in it lol. it said and i quote ' 900 calories.... per 1/2 pizza' and i couldn't even pronounce half of the chemicals on the ingredients list. Wont be making that mistake again.

As a vegan I eat lots of nuts and seeds. I should be more clear. I don't need the salty oil added snack nuts in the evening. That's entirely different from the cashews, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, etc. that are ingredients in my meals. I make my own almond milk and soy milk as well as tofu. Cashews have a creamy quality that makes them a great substitute for dairy if you are trying to get away from cheese. You soak and blend raw cashews and they make something between cream and ricotta in texture. It doesn't taste like cheese, but it tastes good. Let me know if you're interested and I'll give a recipe or two.

I don't think I could lose weight and quit energy drinks. I've come to really enjoy my sugar free red bull (I have 2 small one's a day). It motivates me and it's my reward. If I cut that out, too, I think I'd have a really hard time. If you manage to do it you'll be a real inspiration. Caffeine is a tough addiction to break.

That cashew "cheese" actually sounds really good lol.

Oh I'm not giving up caffiene. It's the only vice I have left, but black coffee is a lot healthier way of getting it than diet energy drinks and sodas.

Here is a basic recipe. I don't know what rejuvelac is, but it's optional. Try adding hatch green chiles before you blend it.

Tied my furthest half hour distance with a much lower avg bpm. Lower than yesterday by 3 bpm and a tenth of a mile further. Pretty easy time of it, but it was quite cold!

Keep up the fine work Q. My buddy Ian loves his vegan pizzas, I'll ask him to shoot off one of his recipes.

Hey Cate, I missed your post before. I certainly turned to crap food today, but it was worth it.

Vee, I'd love a vegan pizza recipe and thanks for th encouragement.

So today I worked outside of a small town called Onalaska which happens to be close enough to Livingston to stop by for the best ribs I've ever eaten. I had more than my fill of ribs at Florida's kitchen. I felt surprisingly well albeit overfull. Once I started running I felt awful. I managed nearly 2.2 miles despite feeling like I might ruin my new shoes at any moment.

I likely ended up under calories because I ate a 300 calorie breakfast, had no sides or bread with the ribs, and no dinner as i still feel full.

I made a pound of tofu and pitcher of soymilk this evening after my run.

In the aerobic zone for a change. The jury is still out on the new shoes. They are amply appointed in ugliness, but I don't know how they will hold up to my strong relationship with Newton's brainchild.

Here is a comparison of days that I've actually recorded both speed and HR. It matches up mostly with a few weird anomalies both ways.

Dude, did your heart stop beating on 2/25? HAHAHA, look at that drop, man. It's like the Demon Drop at Cedar Point.

That was certainly a weird one. I was hoping that it was a sudden leap in efficiency and I would be running like greased lightining. Instead it's been sucking the last few days. I ordered some more high $ shoes because the cheapo ones hurt my joints running and the old ones are crapped out. I'm hoping that the the new shoes wil help, but if it doesn't get better I will have to take a day off from running.

My right hip hurt a lot the whole time. My back was giving me problems before the run, but it feels better now. My hip still hurts and the rest of my legs are sore as shit. My 21st run in a row. 3 weeks straight and I'm feeling beat. Hopefully a good long sleep will do the trick. Maybe all the meat caused inflamation? Meat has arachidonic acid that causes inflamation. Or maybe I'm fat and have been running for 21 days.

Supreme suckage in my right hip. I feel beat up. Today should have been a day off from running but I wanted to finish the contest with a run as I had set for myself.

7 days a week of exercise for 8 weeks. 56 workouts in a row 22 runs in a row.

I also got into 5 pairs of jeans today. Only two of them fit well enough to start wearing so I will retire two pairs of 40s for the new 38s. The other 3 are too snug, but they shouldn't take long.

I've gotten super behind in your diary! Skimmed through what I missed in the last month or so.

Glad to hear your wife got the OK! And also that you are doing AWESOME with the running! WOW! Seriously, you better be proud of yourself.

That pic of you and your dad...and your mom is 5'? Really? Must have a tall gene somewhere in your family that skipped a generation or 2 and found you.

Keep up with the running and retiring them pants! Hope the hip feels better soon.

So I took yesterday off from running and midday the temps dropped and we started to get freezing rain that changed over to sleet. We couldn't get to work today which is okay by me and I can't go run on an icy road so I will have two days off from running. That is probably for the best since even after streching well yesterday, my right hip is tight and painful. It is feeling much better however.

An ice storm in March is odd for here and the fact that it came out of the southwest and was an actual storm with thunder and lightning was quite odd. A lot of buds and blooms have been frostbit no doubt. We lost power last night, but the woodstove kept us cozy with the help of a thermoelectric fan to distribute the heat a bit.

I also got into 5 pairs of jeans today.

Way to go Quercus, you DOG!!! You must be lookin' good; not everybody can manage to pick up 5 women in the same d...wait...you meant...oh...OOOOOOH, YOUR jeeeeeans.

Well, that's pretty awesome too, I guess.
