From alpha testing to the QUERCUS 200

Quercus: They say it's all up in the head re: quitting coffee. The withdrawals (if you can call it that). Why are you going cold turkey with the coffee? A cup a day is good for you, no?

So I drank way too much coffee Amber. I was feeling cruddy on Saturday after drinking coffee and decided to cut it out until the caffiene headache came and then have 1 cup and repeat. Well I stayed really active all Sunday and the headache never came. By the time I really felt bad it was too late for coffee. I felt so bad the next day that I decided this was something I needed tro distance myself from. There is a real affect from stopping chronic high consumption of coffee. I have a friend that studies drug effects for a living (including stimulants). Here is what he said when I told him how bad I was dragging.

"Chronic treatment with antagonists can upregulate receptor number and increase sensitivity to agonists. Caffeine is an adenosine receptor antagonist. You are in withdrawal right now because you have too many receptors being expressed, and each one is sending a bigger than normal signal when adenosine binds."

I will likely have reasonable amounts of coffee again, but I am going to take a break from it for now.

Caffeine really is something and coffee has more of it than most stuff. My Diet Coke habit continues to this day, but I have managed to stop drinking it at around 3pm so that I can sleep at night.

I could have 4 shots of espresso at 6PM and still go to sleep at the regular time. I had a problem. The main benefit for quitting diet soda for me was the reduction in the craving fro real sweets. I have no desire to ever drink another soda diet or regular. Not because of the effect that it's had, but rather once I got past that initial craving for it the thought of the taste seems foreign. It doesn't seem like something I'd want to drink. Even if I am thirsty I'd rather wait and have something else than drink a cold soda on hand. That has actually happened in the field. With on of my past favorite sodas too. This after a lifetime drinking it. Weird.

Now that I don't drink beer, wine, or soda the groceries are a lot lighter. I also don't like sports drinks or flavored waters. Now that I'm off the bean juice it's just water and juice with occasional unsweetened tea. I drink mostly green tea and don't drink enough to have caffeine issues.

Dude!
Nice to see you still plugging along. You have really bettered yourself!. Nice job! Although I have not fallen apart and gained 30lb, I cannot claim progress from last Aug. when I disappeared from here. Thats part of why I am back. Not proud of it but I still lean on diet sodas way too hard. They are like the only bad habit I have left. Gave up cigars, gave up fast food, gave up couch potatohood...sigh

Thanks Brawny! I'm happy you're back. Not very many psoitive supportive places to be foud in internet forms. This site is great. Don't think of it as "gave up" think of it as "improved beyond". Diet sodas is certainly the lesser of those by far.

So I decided my body needed a break yesterday and didn't run. I felt sore and slept hard so it was the right decision.

This was a very good run for me. I felt strong and fresh. I could have went much further. I also had a long field day walking right at 2 miles in mostly mud with some wading and crossing water on logs. I sweat through all my clothes and this day would have worn me out before the regular running. The guy 13 years younger than me and much smaller was beat. :) He mentioned being in bad shape and I prosthelytized on running for a bit. I think he's considering it. I think I need to get some pamphlets printed up.

"Excuse me, do you have some time to talk about the role of Exercise? Wait, I have a pamphlet..."

300.8 for week 4 of 60-90 weeks is -3.2 pounds this week -10.2 pounds for 4 weeks and -32.4 pounds for the year. My average is now -1.5 pounds per week. That's 256 pounds by the end of the year at that rate.

Thanks Vee! Running is basketballl for those of us lacking coordiantion to physically multitask.

So My weekend away included a couple hours of hiking in the Ozarks on Sunday and lots of walking around Saturday and Sunday. My diet was good until Sunday evening and I ate some junk today. So over calories for Sunday and Monday.

Not a bad run after a 6 hour drive and eating junk. Back on the straight and narrow for calories and running because I will be under 300 on Saturday.

I think my reward for getting under 300 will be adjustments to my workouts. I think a 2.3 mile minimum (except recovery days) for each 30 minute run will be nice. I would also like to add 1 day of lifting and 1 day of yoga a week. I intend to run just as frequently, but do the yoga and lifting in addition or on my days off from running.

Running tends to shorten muscles and conective tissues as it builds strength. Yoga stretches and lengthens muscles and connective tissue as it increases fexibility, balance, and stability. These can be thought of a yin-yang of getting healthy. The weight lifting will focus on my upper body which doesn't see as much stress as my lower body in running. Building strength also increases basal metaboism and lowers the bodyfat percentage by building muscle and burning fat. Yoga (as I'll do it) is a low impact aerobic activity and running is a moderate to high impact aerobic activity. lifting is an anerobic activity giving me a balance and variety in my activities.

In the long term I'd like to increase the frequency of lifting and yoga beyond once a week, but for now I will enjoy easing into the routine.

Glad to see you doing so well! So close to that next milestone, you can do it!!

I think it's a good plan to ease into the routing of lifting and yoga, take it slow so you don't over exert your body and cause yourself more harm than good.

Thanks Icy! Good to see you back Miss!

Just a slow 5K. I'm not feeling very well today. My stomach is bothering me. After my run I still managed to clean the gutters, set up my small pool, move a recumbent stationary bike out of the house, move my bench into the house, put together a keyboard stand, and make almond/soy/cashew milk.

Old Q could not have done all that, even feeling well.
New Q......well, that's another matter! New Q, does it all, regardless! Well done. Hope you're feeling better soon xo Cate

Thanks Cate! New Q pushes too hard because he's afraid of becoming old Q again. I feel much better today. I think I may have a break from running today. Maybe some yoga.

Groovy tune V! I'm cautiously optimistic for tomorrow's weigh-in.

I took yesterday off from running. I hit 2,300 yesterday and way under tonight as my stomach didn't want dinner. About 1,300 today.

I didn't run until 11 as it was raining and my stomach didn't feel well. I think I'm stressing over our jobs. I also started eating mushrooms lately so I may be adjusting to that too. It was super humid to the point that I was soaked before I started sweating and could barely see the road at my feet with a headlamp. I'm surprised I went as far as I did.

Get well soon and be careful please!
