Flyer's diary

i read up on what makes a good mortar & pestle and the consensus seems to be slightly on the large size, with a rough surface and heavy. i thought the wooden versions were great looking, but lacked the heft and rough surfaces in practically all cases. so i just ordered this one... a Japanese style made from granite...

if i were a flax seed in my kitchen, i'd be worried... ;)

The only disadvantage of the rough surface is that it´s almost impossible to clean (soapy water would get into the pores of the stone) so you have to use it regularly to avoid residue going rancid. Although in a pinch thoroughly grinding up some dry rice will help you get rid of that, too.

being made of stone, i have a feeling i'll treat this M&P like i deal with cast iron, though i don't think the rough surface of this one is as extreme as a molcajete and certainly a lot harder than volcanic rock. after cleaning i'll probably stick it in a warm oven to make sure all the moisture is gone. thanks for the tip, though... i saw a bunch of videos on seasoning a M&P and grinding up rice seems to be a staple of that task.

if there are any tea connoisseurs here, i've been pondering the reason for some of the holes i found in a teapot i have...

from searching i believe this was made in the 30's.
so i can understand the hole in the lid (vent)...

but two others i cannot figure out.
under the top of the handle...

and especially the one in the spout...

thoughts?

huh, i thought for sure there was some English tea-drinking heritage here. nevertheless, i'll be surprised if a search does not uncover at least one teapot collector society... :)

the worst part about the local bagel store is picking them up so fresh at 6am, the aroma has been driving me crazy all morning. trying my hardest to keep busy.

three outings in a row now, i've spotted a discarded face mask every time i've been out.
i fear they will become the new cigarette butts.

...Great M & P!
so far i'm 100% happy with this mortar & pestle (and i'm finally learning how to spell it...!)

the natural granite is beautifully polished and rough where it is appropriate and it's got some nice heft to it without being too heavy. for the price, around $35... considering this is hollowed out and shaped pieces of solid granite... i'd consider it a good deal.

tx for the wishes... i have always been thankful to my mom for any judicious foresight she had determining my delivery date...

either a day earlier (likely) or later (for certain) would have turned my life in quite a different direction.

Yep, I was 225 on the same chart! Don't recall how high they got but it was not to my number either.

I remember the draft well, but it now seems so long ago.

For those of you who don't know this was the results of the draft lottery to see who would have to go to Vietnam. They started with number 1 and went up until the quota was met. High numbers were very very good numbers.

i may have found the most useless calculator ever made... steps to paces

on a lighter note... if you can control your giggling, some interesting information i never knew...
Why Beans Cause Gas

i'll have to try the, "just checking on the health of my intestinal bacteria." excuse someday... :)

here is some good news for anyone who has hit their goal but is still a bit discouraged by their waistline. i've been in the 160's for a bit over a year now and one thing i had to buy after dropping from a 42" to a 35" waist was a new belt or two. when i first got the one i put on today, i was on the second hole. a few months ago i began to notice i was hitting the 3rd hole without too much effort. but this morning, again i wasn't forcing things, but i could see that i was comfortable passing the 3rd hole, but stuck there for now.

i suppose my fat is simply rearranging itself, but staying the same weight, my waistline still seems to be shrinking... :)

i still am an advocate of weighing yourself everyday, though not really taking much note of it anymore. for at least a few weeks i haven't seen a more than one lb variation...

it occurred to me i should be seeing some sort of change since the last beer i drank was three months ago, but apparently i have been making it up by other means. of course going out for a beer was typically coupled to a few mile walk. win some, lose some.

started some peppers from seed gathered last year... finally got one sprouting and i can see one more that should pop out tomorrow. Pimento Peppers (what they should eventually look like in the left picture)... not an easy one to find in the store. from last year's plants i already have some cayenne and ghost peppers growing.

They look pretty! Do peppers breed true or does it depend on what they got pollinated with?
