Flyer's diary

wow, it's been a long time since i've chewed any gum. i believe last Halloween... or maybe the previous one, i usually can't help but see what Bazooka Joe is up to and might blow a bubble or two... but regular gum is pretty boring.

back in hot water (the good kind) today ...!!

changing out my nearly 30 year old water heater was a little more challenging than i thought, but i did realize over the past 48 hours just how much i'd miss hot water.

:D Oh yes!
And that's pretty impressive, doing home plumbing. You're a man of many talents. :)

i think if it was gas i would have brought in some help, but an electric WH is pretty simple. it was the extra stuff... two frozen valves i also had to be replace, that made me a bit nervous. having to request a water main shutoff, if i screwed that up it would have effected a lot more units than just mine.

i'm pretty thankful that i had a father who was a home repair guy long before it became fashionable. i don't think i ever saw a plumber, electrician or general repairman every show up at our house... well, maybe except for the TV.... when TV's were actually repaired...!

this past week i seem to have been bracketed between 168 and 171, so 170 is a good average.

with all the seeds i have around for the low-carb crackers i'm now hooked on, i was thinking about other places to add some seeds. Googling "seed burgers", i came up with this...

Flax Seed Burgers

1 pound thawed ground beef
2 Tbs finely chopped onion
1 clove garlic minced
2 Tbs flax seed
2 Tbs water
3/4 cup soft bread crumbs (1 slice of bread)
1 beaten egg
1 Tbs mustard
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp pepper

i think i have everything on hand, though i might cut back (or out) the bread crumbs and sub maybe hemp seed hearts... they have about the same consistency... or maybe half chia seeds.

well i simplified the burger recipe a bit...

2 pounds ground beef
½ cup flax seed

8 - ¼ pounders w/ 1 tbsp flax seeds /burger

these went right in the freezer because i've got a lot of chicken in the fridge, too. not seriously worried about the coronavirus, but until more information is brought out, i'll be sticking close to home so i nearly doubled up on supplies my last grocery shopping trip.

flax seeds seem like a great addition to anything.
some benefits, flax seeds are high in ...

Omega-3 Fatty Acid- a “good” fat for heart and bone health.

Lignans- free-radical fighting antioxidants.

Fiber- well known digestive aid.

Nelly and I are making a determined effort to meet you at 170, Flyer - or even to get a foot inside the door of Club 160!

February has always been my lazy month ... regardless of the operation on my toe, i don't think i was out more than half a dozen days of walking. hoping to make March a better month.

picking up some boxed broth and stock, i ran into these dry soup mixes...

532.jpg

there is still some added sugar (16 gms in the Tortilla soup (the whole package) and 8 gms in the chili bean soup), but compared to some i used to use, they are pretty low. and the bottom line... both are very tasty. i've tried some Chicken Tortilla recipes, but sometimes it's worth the little sugar hit just for the convenience. you add your own chicken, so at least you have complete control over that.

they say 8 servings, but for me it's more like three. either one completely fills up my 2¼ quart pot.

this also seems to be a growing trend as there were many other similar mixes on the shelves.
i did fire off an email message already pleading for them to drop the added sugar.

Ha! I was just about to say what @Cate just said, i.e.
good for you, emailing them regarding dropping the sugar.

I was checking out cornflakes yesterday out of interest, and saw that they are 6% sugar, and 3% malt extract - which I'm thinking is probably sugar in another form.

this is getting boring...

169.0 - 2018.06.04.jpg....
so i looked back to last year and apparently it took me 6 months to drop 10 lbs. but then, that was based on my every other week schedule of a lot more activity which has now been postponed because our live steam club has been asked by the city to stop our activities until the pandemic is over.

...well, like Roseanne Rosannadanna used to say, "...it just goes to show you, it's always something."

last month...
1) get up
2) take a shower
3) brush my teeth
4) go to the store
5) drive home

today...

well, after reaching at high of 177 on one weight check last month, i think i've turned things around. haven't seen 170+ in about a week now. have to credit that upward surge to a perfect storm- type situation, though. shortbread on the menu... got carried away with bagels for a few weeks... & my foot operation put me on the couch for a while... all hitting at once.

i screwed up on my last shopping trip and wound up buying twice the amount of flax seed, so i've been trying to add it to everything...

bagels are short of fiber, so bagel, cream cheese and flax seeds?

i had one of the flax seed burgers i had made up, today. it changed the taste and texture, but only very, very slightly.

same old, same old, again...

CA is on a mandatory stay-at-home order as of today... i've been on my own isolation plan since the 9th. i will need to go food shopping soon, but will try putting it off until Tuesday or Wednesday. the last three days our county has gone from 55 --> 85 --> 105 --> 130 Covid-19 cases, so it's still pretty hard to tell just how pervasive the virus is here. testing remains slow, sporadic and well behind the curve with many people still having a problem even finding a doctor or place to get tested. Trump continues to encourage people to put off testing believing that if the numbers stay low, it will be better for him politically whereas in truth he might start feeling the weight of a soaring death toll very shortly.

I know that sounds good, and people staying home probably makes sense, but what does mandatory mean? In the US is there really any legal way to enforce such a thing? I know I have been subject to many a hurricane based "mandatory" evacuation and those are completely unenforceable. I think it was mostly a CYA thing so that if you stayed when you should not the local authorities could shift the blame to you for not evacuating. And in my experience 90% of the mandatory evacuation orders we got made no sense, and were usually ignored. The other 10% were a different story.

I am not against the whole shutdown thing, to the contrary I think most of it is for the best. I am just not sure what real enforcement teeth the government here has to make these things happen.
