Flyer's diary

i found a good way to find a great local restaurant in a small town when Yelp is less than helpful... stop by the local grocery store and ask the oldest employee you can find where they like to have lunch (aka breakfast) ...

Is that the salad over there on the right? lol

it was a bit cheesier than i would have prepared myself, but this was an OMAD day, so i think i did ok. i hate to call it a problem with intermittent fasting, but when you don't eat three or more times a day, you have to be selective, though often on the road that selection is a dart throw and it seems like i hit a lot more places closer to one than twenty.

Cheers for being selective - and thanks for the tip for on-the-road restaurant selection! (Gotta admit, Rob's got a point about the salad! :rotflmao: )

linear algebra was never one of my strong points... :)

in the US we are hearing a lot about the wildfires in Australia and now it seems Koala populations are being devastated. if there is an upside, once the cute animals become at risk, people seem to care more. i know some members here are from down-under... is it really that bad? ...worse?

It is that bad, Flyer as the fire season is usually at it's worst in Feb. It's scary to have these catastrophic fires already. Cute animals, especially koalas, have been at risk in our country for a long time & governments still allow people to log old-growth forests, develop more rural land into residential or industrial land, build more coal mines, build in high-risk areas and so on. No wonder young people are despairing for their future. We'll be lucky to have any native animals left, cute or not. Whoops. Back off soap-box. Yes- the situation is awful.

Salad? We ain't got no salad!
My favorite bbq place was Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They had a hand written sign on the door that said "No bean, no slaw, no salad, don't ask!" The menu consisted of ribs, ordered by the pound and a selection of beers. White bread was served with the ribs, in half loaf stacks. Bear Bryant made the place famous when he started taking the team there for pregame meals. Now it seems to have franchised to other Alabama cites, not sure if its the same.

Congrats on being in the 150s, is that a first? First time I can remember you being there.

...Congrats on being in the 150s, is that a first? First time I can remember you being there.

at 159.5 lbs, i calculate a 22.1 BMI... nice to hit a low, but i don't think it will last. these past two weeks have been pretty stressful and while i hear a lot of people eat when confronted with stress, i seem to go just the opposite... i lose the incentive to eat. a lot of days recently have been OMAD days just because i felt i needed to eat something while having a few brews. i usually have a few beers maybe one or two times a week... this trip it was just about every day. oh yeah... and i tend to drink more when stressed.

but as effective as it sounds, i really wouldn't recommend the sitting on your butt for 7-8 hours/ day driving, having a few drafts, falling asleep early, getting up in the middle of the night, packing and starting it all over again diet.

i see people here referring to steps. could someone define a step? is it a single stride? a left foot or right foot forward? or is it both left & right (or right & left depending on which you start with)...? when i walk, a single stride of mine is about 2½ feet. so in one case, 10,000 steps would be 5' x 5000 = about 4¾ miles. otherwise, it would be double that or about 9½ miles.

i wish more restaurants would read this...
Why Flatware Matters to the Success of Your Restaurant

in the past two weeks i ate out almost every day on the road and there was not one place i stopped at that isn't now using horribly cheap, stamped out, sharp edge, uncomfortable to hold, metal flatware. since i brought along some from home, i started bringing my own into restaurants and before leaving, briefly tried making my point to the arguably deaf ears of their management. i can imagine their logic... put out something better and people are going to steal them. ...what a sad state.

this one was a surprise... i thought for sure yesterday's low was due to being dehydrated after a 9 hour drive, but today this was after breakfast...

i had to move my scale, but it's the same cement floor... just pointing west now.

unfortunately after two weeks of meeting new people everyday on the road, i feel a sore throat coming on... not an unusual occurance with me. oh well, time to re-up the antibodies... not that worried about it. on the upside i'm finding that i'm liking tea without milk now. it was a surprise that i started to like black coffee, but never thought i would give up tea with cream/ sugar. ...go figure. i might try some lemon, but that would just be hot iced tea..... bleah...!! :)

well, i hate to always harp on the intermittent fasting thing, but it's got to be the easiest diet regardless of where you are. on the downside of being away from home, i couldn't cook up steamed vegetables (probably 1/3 of all my calories on any one day), but on the upside, i only had two bagels in the past two weeks or even any bread (solid) besides what was attached to burgers.

and as i've said before, i don't consider exercise part of my diet.... just an adjunct, like walking somewhere rather than driving if it's within a few miles.

so this should be fun... in a few weeks i have an appointment to get my driver's license reissued due to the gold star thing. seriously thinking about lying about my weight. i think 165 would be ok.... i'm still convinced the 158/9 isn't going to hold... well, i do still have a few weeks.

What's the gold star thing? ...
apparently regular US state driver's licenses will not be considered a legal ID after October 2020. to travel after that you either need a govt issued passport or a "gold star" ID. for that, you now need a certified birth certificate. the actual "gold star" might vary from state to state... in CA it is a golden bear. ok... i guess it is now called a "Real ID".

also looking forward to an updated picture... with my hair the way it is now, i don't look much like my current DL.

not that it was illegal, but once on a trip to visit my brother in Virginia, i dropped into the VA DMV, took the written test blind, and walked out with a valid VA driver's license the same day good for 5 years. this was wayyyyyyyy before 9/11.

Just checking - by "to travel" you mean by plane, etc? There's no bar on you driving (or biking, or walking) from Massachusetts to New Mexico, right? Or would a person without the valid gold star be picked up as a vagrant, or similar?

Oh, and you said
not that it was illegal
Is it legal now to hold two different driver's licences in two different states?
