Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Of course, part of the difference is that you're bulking while I'm cutting. It's hard to keep a deficit and add that much extra protein. Even if I were eating at maintenance, I could probably get the extra protein in.

I do notice on the days when I have eggs and meat for breakfast, I get a lot closer. But I also like the health benefits of eating oatmeal and fruit. Difficult trade-off.

Tom, my cals seldom top 2000 and my protein 99% of the time ranges from 100 to 135 a day...of course almost every day I have egg whites, dairy, meat and nuts....(and every day I struggle to keep my saturated fat under 20g)...it is a frustrating trade-off sometimes...have you thought about using your oats to combine with eggwhites, berries, a little vital wheat gluten and making pancakes for breakfast somedays?

I wouldn't fret it at this point. If we notice that muscle mass is diminishing (how are the calves?) it might be a wise idea to bump up the protein.

Nutrition & Exercise

OK, I'm going to bring into public a disagreement I'm having with Coach Steve, not because I'm convinced I'm right and he's wrong, but because I think it's a discussion people can learn something from.

The question is: what is the role of exercise in weight loss?

Steve's position (I hope I'm paraphrasing it right here; if not, I know you'll correct me): Nutrition is the lion's share of it, both in short term and long term weight loss. In terms of physique development, however, exercise and nutrition are equally important.

My position: for short term weight loss, nutrition is the key element. But in terms of long term weight loss, nutrition and exercise are equally important. I believe once you reach your target weight, you won't stay there unless you exercise, even if your nutrition is spot on. Why? because without exercise, as you age, you'll naturally get less active. Also, even with a good diet, you cheat now and then. A solid, life-long exercise program is therefore just as important as your nutritional program in keeping the weight off over the years.

Of course, we all agree that if you let your diet go to hell, you'll gain the weight right back, no matter how much exercise you do. But I'm not talking about that situation. I'm talking about the situation where you continue to watch your diet carefully. At that point, I would maintain, you have to watch your exercise program just as carefully.

Let me say right now that I know FAR less about this subject than Steve! I am more than willing to admit I'm still basically an ignoramus on this subject. But part of my conclusion is based on my life experience, too. Generally, the first step in gaining my weight back after losing it was NOT a change in eating habits, but rather it was getting lazy about exercise. Then, when the weight started coming back on, I got lazy about eating, too.

Ahhh, you are basing our very brief discussion (via PM) on generalities too much. You should know by now that there is a lot more behind much of what I say on here. :D

First, I should say this:

I don't EVER advocate weight loss without the goal of physique improvement. Why?

1. Looking good tends to do good things for people in general.

2. More importantly, a strong body is a healthy body. Strong in the sense of muscular and endurance capacity. The human system of physiology was meant to be used. Not sit behind a computer screen all day long.

So because I don't EVER advocate weight loss without the goal of physique improvement, you can say that your above post is a MUTE topic.

In ANY situation, I think exercise and nutrition are equally important from where I stand, simply b/c I don't think anyone should be doing one without the other wrt exercise and eating right.

Follow me?

Now, in the EXACT context of weight loss ONLY:

I certainly think that nutrition plays a larger role than exercise. Energy deficits are the name of the game. It is much easier to create a deficit nutritionally than through exercise. Let's face it, we don't all have hours on top of hours to exercise in order to create the kind of deficit you need. Add to this the idea of fatigue management and whatnot, and it just isn't feasible.

The way I define what is more important is simple:

Which one could take you to your goal without the other, hence, be more important.

Nutrition can. Exercise, not so much.

If your nutrition is off, yet you are exercising everyday, you still won't reach your goals. Hell, you can move in the opposite direction actually. If your nutrition is on, yet you don't exercise, you can still reach your goals.

It is all about perspective.

Again, this is a mute topic for me. It is a theoretical debate only b/c I would only defend this stance in theory, and not in application.

psssst -It's moot - not mute :D

Moot means obsolete, irrelevant, something that doesn't apply anymore.

Mute means silent, without sound.

**personal pet peeve of mine**

as you were :)

i personally think your right on steve... for years ive done one without the other, and its gotten me to a dangerous level of being overweight. Now that im applying both tactics, i feel better, and im not getting discouraged, and a big plus is that ive yet to see my weight fluctuate more than 2 pounds up, even during periods of rest.

thank you :)

I always get amused when I turn into the grammar police - because my grammar and spelling are atrocious on most days :)

Funny thing is, I was saying moot when I typed it.

Steve I do the same thing...I KNOW how to spell it or say it...and it gets typed wrong....I just blamed it on my age... :)

Funny cause grammatical errors bug me, too, mal...and it slays me when I make them...I am known to edit my posts when I find mistakes.... *sigh*

Maybe it's an age thing.

Me, I'm just a dummy! :p

Plus, I typed like 300 trillion words a minute, putting little thought into anything.

Well, that sounds great then, Kim. Too bad they don't have classes like that at our gym!

Tom...HI!

Bruce and I were checking out the class list last night for LA Fitness...they have a Bodyworks and Abs class that uses weights...and a Bootcamp conditioning...both are intriguing me...still haven't gotten to the Kickboxing one...but I have a good excuse, since we we "working out' with our move last weekend!

I know the classes vary from location and from times of day, too.

Steve, OK, this explanation makes a lot more sense to me.

And, I think it's a much better explanation. Why? Because even though a lot of people come to you for advice about "weight loss", what they really need is advice about changing their lifestyle.

Maybe I'm just quibbling here. . . :)

Anyway, if I misrepresented your position, it was inadvertent. I really was looking for some clarification, and I got it.

So I agree, I will be mute about this "disagreement" because it is a moot point. :)

Beth, moving is basically a bunch of squats, deadlifts, and military presses. The trouble is, you do it to exhaustion about 20 times over!

Hi hi Tom!
I like this discussion!
But in relation to protein, I was just going to mention what's my new thing: snacking on canned smoked oysters and clams. I love em, for 1 thing, they are pretty low cal for their nutrition, and here's something I read in my Women's Running Book: supposedly studies have shown a lot of female runners don't get enough calories, then not enough iron, and not enough protein. So I read some more and decided oysters and clams will help me out in iron, protein, and zinc--all very important in general but especially for running. It's delicious! I just made a mini pizza on whole wheat pita bread with sauce, shredded Mex blend cheese, clams, green onions, basil, and mint with fresh avocado on top after I warmed it. Wow it was good!! :)
