Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

OK, the scale's messing with my head, that's for sure. It is a nice "tease" though. Eight years ago, I got down to 234, so I'm getting very close to that, and once I drop below that, it'll be the lowest since 1988.

Ya know.....I think it's interesting how we remember our weight so clearly at particular points in our life...and the importance that it holds for us. I find myself saying the same thing....and your comment just got me thinking about that. My current "milestone goal" is to weigh below 135 which will be my lowest point since 1982! I got down to 136 in 2004. Have a good one! :)

Workout Log - 4/10/2007

First day back at weights after being away for almost 2 weeks -- it felt good.

Session was 50 minutes long; 500 calories burned

Squats
1 x 5 - bar only
1 x 4 - 95 lbs.
1 x 3 - 145 lbs.
5 x 5 - 165 lbs.
Difficulty = 2

BB Bench Press
5 x 5 - 140 lbs.
Diff = 2

Pullups
5 x 5 - level 17
Diff = 2

1 Arm Db Row
3 x 5 - 60 lbs.
Diff = 2

Swiss Ball Crunch
3 x 10
Diff = 2

I expect some DOMS in my hams tomorrow -- I could feel them straining a bit on the squats. Otherwise, everything felt normal. I'll stay at these weights another week, and then go up 5 lbs.

Did 30 minutes of digging in the garden after dinner for another 100 calories or so.

hey Tom! im gonna try to do my steady state for as long as you :) i think i just get bored. my hand is almost healed up, im gonna wrap them this time, the circuits helped fend off the boredom.

so on the squats you do 3 sets of warm ups then 5x5?

Hey Tom, I have some weight loss goals that I'm looking to hit too because I remember being that weight. 365 is a big one.

Weight: 238.4 -- the scale gods are still cooperating nicely.

Yesterday's food: 2467 calories - 34% fat (9% saturated), 42% carbs, 21% protein, 3% alcohol. RMR at this weight is 2,310 calories, so I ate slightly more than that. However, weight training + gardening put me over the top with an additional 600 calories, giving me a deficit of 453 for the day.

The dreaded plateau seems not to have started yet, though I have a feeling this may be where I stay for a while. But who knows? Maybe some of those calorie laden meals I had in San Francisco may have tricked my metabolism.

I'm really pissed at LA Fitness. They only have 3 power cages where you can do squats, and one of them has a broken clamp, so it's inoperable. The remaining two are often used by PT's to have their clients do stretches in (that's another rant; don't get me started on that one!). Yesterday, there were two guys using up both cages for almost 30 minutes, forcing me to do squats just about last in my routine. It wasn't a situation where I could work in easily, either, since they had the bar loaded with plates. (I did notice they weren't even going parallel, though. If that weren't bad for my knees, I'd try that too, I guess) I'm going to complain to the manager every day now, until they're fixes. Sheesh, it's already been 3 weeks, more than enough time to get the part.

It's amazing how few people even go to parallel on the squats, much less ATG. I would estimate it's somewhere in the range of 2% of all people who do them. Where do they learn this form? I don't get it.

I was HUNGRY yesterday -- had to work on-site, and couldn't fit in my afternoon snack. On the 1 hour drive back home, Starbucks was calling out my name, along with a big scone, but I resisted, opting instead for a nice handful of nuts when I got home. Take that, sweet tooth!

RJ, I don't care for steady state cardio at all myself. I only do it after weight training, because HIIT or interval sessions is too much strain on the legs the day after squats and/or deads.

I do warmups for both squats and deads. Basically, it's a declining set for every 50 lbs. So I do 1 set of 5 with just the bar; then I add a 25 lb. plate on each end, and do 1 set of 4; then I add 2 more 25 lb. plates and do 1 set of 3, etc. I find that really helps me concentrate on my form as well, so by the time I'm up to my working weight I've worked out all the kinks.

Looks to me like you'll be hitting that one fairly soon, Cannon!

Exercise Log - Wed., 4/11/2007

A comparatively lazy day today.

I didn't have DOMS from yesterday, but my legs were a bit tired, so I did 60 minutes of steady state in the "fat burning zone," LOL.

Jogged at 6 mph for 30 min. on the treadmill, then did 30 min. more on the elliptical. Burned around 750 calories.

Tomorrow I'm going to lose 1 pound in 30 minutes. It's a new diet that I do every 10 weeks or so. The 1 pound loss is guaranteed, but the trouble is, you tend to gain it back during the next week.

Please elaborate.... I am curious. I could lose 1 pound in a minute too, but fingers and/or toes dont grow back the next week.... ;)

What is the guaranteed 1 pound weight loss plan? And are you going to make a million off of it from an online ebook? :)

Oh yeah, as for the "dreaded plateau not starting yet.." Bah!!! Push that negativity out buddy! Fight that plateau, don't just accept that its around the corner! Positive thininking is half the battle right? I would rather hear you say, "A plateau *may* be around the corner.... But I am going to kick its butt before it see's the whites of my eyes!!!" Or something like that!

I know you have it in you! Show that potential plateau who is boss!!

sirant

Don't anticipate plateaus, that's bad luck! :p

Good for you!!! Scones are like, 800 calories (well maybe more like 460--but not worth it! All dry and nasty, sticking to the roof of your mouth, and sitting in your stomach like a rock).

LOL. Even though it's a guaranteed loss of a pound, and it only takes 30 minutes, I don't think I'll make much money from this "secret." Every 10 weeks, I give a pint of blood, and tomorrow morning is my appointment. A pint a pound . . .

As for plateaus, after the last two, I'm not nearly as afraid of them anymore. You see, I realize now that I can just "chip away" at them, and eventually they'll cave in. When they do, I suddenly drop 2 or 3 pounds, or, as in the case of plateau #2, 5 pounds in one week. I know I'll conquer the plateau this time -- that's the difference.

Yeah, I thought about whether it was really worth an HOUR on the treadmill just for a scone. And it wasn't.

Way to go Tom.

Thanks, Kelly. You're doing pretty damned good yourself.

It is exciting to be reaching a weight from years ago.

That kind of thought keeps me feeling like my age is running backwards too. :)

It's great to see you getting stuck back into your training and nudging away at that weight again. (Good luck with your gym! )

Heya Tom, just catching up on what you're up to. I agree about you on the gym equipment thing, our gym sometimes gets so busy you are waiting for cool down gear, by the time you get it you're cold!
I just generally go when there are less people or ill walk/run somewhere.
I think on The Biggest Loser where they had a week with no gym equipment really helped hit that one home for me. They had to make use of everything else and not use the 'it wasnt available' excuse. I recall them carrying couches from one room upstairs and then back down etc for an hour.

I like your 1lb in 30 mins diet though! Not exactly the best for a fad diet, perhaps we should all drink a gallon of water one day, then loose the gallon into the toilet the next for a fad diet? :D

in 1988 I wouldnt have weighed much at all, being that I was only a year old hehe.

I hope your gym get their equipment fixed soon, I used to go to gym where you could hardly ever use the cross trainers when it was busy! How frustrating.

Keep on going :)

that's just scary equating anything you can eat to how long it would take to burn it off - like that tic tac commercial - 1 1/2 calories -you know you can burn that off by breathing :)

if you enjoy the scone - eat the scone :)

I'm going to complain to the manager every day now, until they're fixes. Sheesh, it's already been 3 weeks, more than enough time to get the part.
nudges often work - what's the expression - the squeaky wheel gets the oil :)

Wow your doing really good - when you jog on the treadmill is it a straight jog...I alternate 1 min walkin and 30 secs jogging - so far it is all I can do...

As far as the digging Ive been doing alot of that lately - 100 cals hey - lol - a big part of me says is that it...LOL

Weight: 237.4. What have I done to appease the scale gods? Or are they just teasing me? I dopped a pound from yesterday, and this is before my guaranteed 1 pound weight loss in 30 minute plan. I don't get it, but I'm sure enjoying it while it lasts.

Yesterday's food intake came to 2,509 calories - 38% fat (8% saturated), 35% carbs (38 grams fiber), and 26% protein. With an RMR of 2,310 calories, plus 750 calories from exercise, I had a deficit for the day of 551 calories. So far, since I returned from San Francisco, I've built up an accumulated deficit of 2,000 calories, and that doesn't come close to the 2 pounds I've dropped this week.

My conclusion is that either I actually had a deficit while in San Francisco (very possible, with 8 to 10 hours of carpentry every day), or the scale gods are just toying me, tantalizing me to show where I'll be after I conquer my next plateau (equally possible, given my history).

Started watching "Fat, What They Aren't Telling You" on PBS. The one thing they seem to be emphasizing is how complex this all is. At first, I was saying to myself, "no, it isn't all that complex; it's energy balance." Then I realized how many decades it took me to get to the point I'm at now, where I'm approaching my weight loss and fitness program in a very scientific way. The average person just isn't there. Hell, the average person doesn't have time to learn how to do a squat in the correct form, much less learn about caloric intake, management of fatigue, etc.

Consequently, the average person embarks on weight loss programs that are virtually guaranteed to fail. And that's why it's a very complicated and difficult struggle for the vast majority of people.

I see the break is treating you well. Don't be fooled Tom. Taking a break from a diet, especially when you are as strict and prudent as you are, does wonders for jump-starting things.

Regarding squat form, I am the ONLY one in my gym that goes below parallel. Imagine that. I have been training there for almost a decade. In that time, I have transformed myself from a scrawny teen to what you see today. Yet, nobody follows me. And I refuse to help people who don't take the time to learn for themselves.

I know what I know today, mainly from asking questions of those who have walked this path with success already.

Every now and again, if I see someone totally screwing up form to the point where injury will certainly happen over time, I will chime in. But more often than not, the person usually listens, but you can tell they are thinking, "What the hell do you know?"

Keep up the good work man!

Glad to read your bit about "Fat". I saw it too. It made me grateful to be in the 100s. We are not supposed to be fat. It made me think of a few super committed fit people in my community and they are almost treated like royalty, with awe and respect, as if they're doing something impossible. Beating obesity in our culture deserves reward but as that woman said, its not everything.
I was taking a few notes during the show and the first thing I wrote down was "I'm 43 and cancer free, so far". That was worth a small celebration.

Well, there was so much to that program, I wish I had recorded it.
