Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Tom, Okay 3 things for you today!

1) Have you be eating a lot more sodium lately??

2) I'm sure at least 3 lbs is muscle gain, with your workouts it was bound to happen, your a weight lifting machine my friend, have you did measurements?? Or body fat percentage? I'm sure it's all converting to muscle and nothing more than that. Actually, I would be willing to put money on that one!!

3) Don't let it get you down, are you seeing the results in the mirror?? We all know the SCALES SUCK!! don't go by the scales, go by your clothes and how you feel and if you can calculate your body fat percentage that would be really helpful.

You do so well, something good is happening, except the BP issue, but don't let it discourage you!! Give it another week and try to lay off on sodium as much as possible and see if that works better. Let me know what happens

Kim

Kim, 3 answers:
1) My sodium intake has been average, with the exception of the 1 1/2 margaritas I had on Sunday.
2) I have been doing measurements, and everything is the same. Body fat percentage is the same, too.
3) I looked in the mirror and it CRACKED! :(

No, No, NO it didn't crack. Your wife see's you, what does she think?? I truly believe it's muscle my friend, and I don't care what you say, with your workouts it has to be. I say OVERLOAD on water for a few days and flush out any crap you might have in there. Maybe you have an infection working, now that I think of it. Infection inside can cause inflammation and weight gain. And also blood pressure elevation. How's everything else going?? Do you feel a bug coming on?? Just trying to figure this out. But that certainly could be your answer.

Good morning, Tom. I wonder if your BP is up because of your emotions about your weight increase. Or the pain from your back. My dr. says that when you are in pain, your BP rises.

I know how frustrating it is to deal with these increases. It happened to me in April...I felt like I had lost so much ground. I had to remind myself of all the other great benefits to my staying on track that month and try to ignore the scale so that I would not be discouraged.

Hang in there. It'll turn around, soon. :)

Stop trying to figure it out. Your numbers aren't exact, even though you track meticulously. You are eating more than usual and expending a lot less then usual. I am sure some of it is water weight. You are viewing this as a negative b/c you are giving the scale too much credit.

A few pounds.

Big whoop.

It's a break that your body needed.

Focus on that and come this weekend, you will be back into the swing of things.

How many cals have you been eating on the break?

OK, I'll try to calm down. . . :)
I've been averaging about 2,500 calories a day the whole time. Yesterday was a bit higher at 2,850 calories, but the other days, it's been more like 2,400 calories.

Ouch Tom, I totally agree with everything that's already been said...and I have a feeling that although you probably agree as well on an intellectual level...your emotional side is still wanting to have a mini-freak out and question "what am I dong wrong?" It's discouraging enough to see weight gain (unless that's your aim) when you know you've been slacking off, but it feels totally demoralizing to see it when you know you've been doing everything "right". This is one of those times when you really just have to "trust the process" as Cannon says....and trust your body and trust yourself. Yeh, I know, far easier said than done.

Sorry to see you don't feel you're doing too well... thpugh I'm sure as everyone else has said it will turn itself around. :)

With the shape that you want to get in you can't let the blips discourage you. When you're at this long enough they'll come and go. This break is going to be very beneficial--you'll see.

geez, I got images of steve slapping you upside the head moe-style or something. Are trainers supposed to get violent? lol. Tom, if i knew what to tell you to help get through something like this, I certainly would. everyone is different, and everyone has to handle these kinds of situations in their own personal way. lots of great suggestions youve gotten though for sure. whatever you have to do to get through it though, just know we are all gunning for you to succeed and hit the pavement running again this weekend.

Oh Tom. Long days with a massive drop in exercise and therefore your body isn't behaving routinely when it comes to weight, a massive drop in endorphins, so naturally a rise in BP!! Urk! Of course you are doing it anyway, just as you do the dreaded steady state cardio anyway. :)

But low endorphin time just drags doesn't it?

Are you allowed to walk a short way along the beach? Can you get a massage/foot massage or buy some new music, go to a play or a concert?? I hope something nice happens to take some of the sting out of this the next couple of days.

That is incredibly frustrating and discouraging Tom! You broke our hearts with this mirror cracking nonsense. I know how you feel as we seemed to hit this plateau and then regain period about the same time and its been a few months now with lots of discouragements. Our only option is to keep trying and you know this already as you are a very bright man. Let's just get back on track and see if this rest period actually helps beat our plateau/gain. This'll be interesting..

First, I want to thank all my friends on WLF who supported me yesterday. I really appreciate that.

Today I'm at 233.6, which is a bit more reasonable. After I totally freaked out yesterday morning, I buried myself in my work. I have a huge project due by August anyway, so I basically wrote software from 4:30 am to slightly past midnight, breaking only for meals and the occasional diversion of weeding in my garden. I decided I'm not going to count calories until Friday, using instead a "meal proxy" in FitDay for 3,000 calories a day. I'm not eating that much -- I don't think -- but at least if my weight goes up, I'll have a hefty surplus to "explain" it.

For dinner last night we went to Souplantation and I admit I pigged out a bit. Of course it's hard to pig out too much when you fill yourself up with vegetables first! But I did have two bowls of soup - one of posole and one of clam chowder - followed by 2 chocolate chip cookies and a brownie and ice cream. Yeah, and that morning I went to the coffee shop and indulged myself with some cheese cake. That's what I tend to do when I get really bummed out.

But I got it out of my system. Today I'm feeling pretty good. Systolic BP is still high for some reason, but it could be that intense exercise just keeps it in line. That kind of shows me what I need to do the rest of my life. Exercising where you really push yourself is not a "diet" thing; it's a "life" thing.

I'm not sure why I freaked out so badly, but I think what was going through my mind is this: I've worked my butt off almost every day, and even then the weight loss is painfully slow. I've done everything "right". And then in 4 days, I'm not even level; I'm back where I was a month ago!

Of course, that's the sort of thinking that leads people to give up. Although I fell off the wagon yesterday, I haven't given up. Intellectually, I know there are setbacks. Emotionally, it's hard to deal with them, but there'e really no other choice, is there?

So, Kim, Beth, Steve, Cym, Valerie, Sprite, Cannon, CoachCrimson, Felici, and Blancita - I can't thank you enough. Support really makes a difference, and you made the difference to me yesterday!

It's so good that you're feeling better. It is 100% understandable that you would cop that negative thought about what is going on. Of course, we know that you don't really believe you can lose a month of work in four well behaved days - not unless it's on a computer anyway. :) Two days to go now - right? :)

Hi Felici. Yep, Friday is blast off day, and I can't wait! I've got my programs all printed up, my mp3 player ready, and the HIIT program selected!

~hugs~

I'm so happy to see your feeling better! We all have break down days and it's good to see your human too! I wish you a very good day today!!
Kim
