Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

18 days?? You dont mean without breaks do you?

Good grief man! If you were doing that regime for 18 days without a break you must be a machine in human form! No wonder the plateau went away, you beat the crap out of it and sent it packing. I looked back through some of your posts this morning and saw you hit 231! Great work man! I was sort of sneakily hoping I would catch up with you, but looks like I have a lot more work for that to happen!

Ah the unassisted chin up..... How I wish! Another goal of mine for sure. But considering I thought running was a pipe dream, why not chin ups next? We don't have assisted chin up machines anywhere I go, so I will have to wait for the real thing. I do have real chin up equipment though. I may have mentioned it before, but the Chinese government makes wonderful use of the lottery money it takes in. They put amazing manual exercise equipment in all the parks and living complexs absolutely free. A gym for everyone and very safe. I was planning to make a movie this weekend showing everyone these cool little do-dads so you can see my outdoor gym in the bamboo and palm trees. I think our own government could learn a thing or two about encouraging fitness amongst its people. I will let you know when the video is online.

And thankfully for me today is my day off too! I will of course walk at lunch time, but after work it is straight down to the sauna at the end of the street. After 4 days straight of running my poor old bones need it. Its amazing though. As tired and sore as I feel on weds night, after the sauna on thurs night I literally feel like a new man. Should be a good day tomorrow.

After your regime buddy I hope you have a very restfull day off!! Dont let the family talk you into too much extra house or yard work!! Kick the feet up and sink into the deepest and comfiest sofa you got! You deserve it!

Oh and hey, quit planning for plateau #4!!! Positive thinking buddy!! After your current whirlwind of activity I am sure no plateau in its right mind would come near you with a 10 foot pole..... Just watch out for the ladies in the neighborhood this summer.... They may be more of a threat than the plateaus.... ;) You keep working out like that and you will have to change your diary name from "Fit by 60" to "Stud-muffin by 60"

I am sure many of the ladies here would agree!!

Thanks, Pinky. Yes, we have vanilla, green tea, sucklng pig, Beijing Duck, fried silkworm, and monkey brain.

Good thing you like vanilla, eh?

Lol... beijing duck scent?!?!? i think dat will set me on a wild eating spree.
i had that in Beijing and couldn't stop eating the whole nite!

wow your workout sounds heavy. do most guys do that?

They do make some weird ones....

I have (fortunately perhaps) not seen the same flavor of incense that Tom has, but I did honestly see a Christmas Incense back home in Canada a few years ago that was roast turkey and stufing scented...... Imagine, inviting the whole family over for Christmas dinner, they walk in smelling turkey and stuffing, start drooling, then you serve them macaroni and cheese!!! That would be awesome.... For the record though I bought the incense out of curiousity, and it smelled like no turkey I have ever met!

And as for most guys working out like Tom, we wish! Tom has a dedication that is amazing. Plus not everyone has the same goals. I barely weight train these days because I am quite a big dude already and I have gotten pretty heavily into running, so many days I lack the energy to work out like the big guy does. Once my weight is down I will weight train more, but I doubt I will be able to keep up with Tom.

LOL, no there's a rest day every 4 days. Here's the routine:

Day 1 Interval Training
Day 2 Weights A
Day 3 SS Cardio
Day 4 rest
Day 5 Weights B
Day 6 SS Cardio
Day 7 Interval Cardio
Day 8 Weights A
Day 9 rest
Day 10 Interval Training
Day 11 Weights B
Day 12 SS Cardio
Day 13 rest
Day 14 Weights A
Day 15 SS Cardio
Day 16 Interval Cardio
Day 17 Weights B
Day 18 rest

That's for sure. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing that video, though.

LOL, you totally crack me up. Actually, I don't view the plateaus in such a negative light anymore. I've defeated three of them in a row, and I'm confident about beating any more that come my way. It's kind of how I lose weight, and I've accepted that.

As for "stud-muffin," I haven't posted any pictures yet. When I do, you'll quickly retract that bit of nonsense! :)

LOL, yes, the beijing duck scent is more for guys like Steve, who have a hard time putting on weight.

As for my workouts, no, most guys don't work out anywhere near as hard as I do, and I don't think I'm just bragging here. Not even the young guys do what I do, and most of the people my age read the newspaper as they casually ride the stationary bikes. I think the sort of interval training I do would probably give them an instant heart attack, and the squats and deadlifts I do would wrench their backs in ways they couldn't imagine. But I'm driven, and I like to improve on what I did last time at each session, so after a few months of that, the workouts get pretty intense.

I have (fortunately perhaps) not seen the same flavor of incense that Tom has, but I did honestly see a Christmas Incense back home in Canada a few years ago that was roast turkey and stufing scented...... Again, you are such a crackup! I am literally LOL'ing.

I doubt you'll have much of a problem keeping up with me, once you start. Actually, if you do hit a plateau that doesn't seem to budge, you might consider starting weight training earlier than you had planned.

Congrats on the loss Tom. That's a heckuva regiment. You're doing outstanding.

Thanks, Cannon. I appreaciate the support, as always.

Tom, i dont know how the hell you keep such meticulous track of EVERYTHING health related, lol. you must be a statistician, either in this life or a previous one...

and after reading some of your workouts, i can not help but wish i had the opportunity to do some with you. you might actually be able to keep up with me in the weights intensity wise (ive met maybe 3 or 4 people in my life that could), and as a man more than twice my own age (no offense!!) you could kick my ass cardiovascularly and really push me to excel there.

heck, you know what, im going to start my own challenge! its going to be the "kick Tom's butt cardiovascularly" challenge! of course i mean this only in good fun, but you are setting a great example of something i need to get my ass moving with. i hate steady state cardio as much as you do, and interval training would be so much more beneficial to me athletically anyways. so that is now one of my goals, to catch up to you!

LOL, Thanks coach. Actually, statistics was my favorite class in my MBA program. I think what I enjoy is seeing patterns emerge from all the noise.

I'm up for the challenge! If you're really serious, you might be interested in the mp3 soundtracks at . I generally do Vol. 5, Vol. 6, or Press Play. I have Excel graphics that I cut out and take to the gym with me to show me the goals for that session. They're a hell of a challenge, and a lot of fun, and really have put me in good shape. If you want, I'd be happy to send you the excel files.

I love the Finger Lakes region. I was up there around 20 years ago, when my kids were just toddlers, and had a great time.

SS Cardio = Steady State Cardio, i.e. no intervals, pretty much at a constant speed.

This type of cardio is good to do after a heavy weights session, to give your quads and hams time to recover.

stats were always fairly interesting to me as well, really, math in general. when i was younger, i wanted to be a math teacher. now i have been coaching and substitute teaching, and have ruled that out as a permanent career option, lol. though i enjoyed my stats class as well, i have never quite took to the recording like you do. most of my results in the weightroom stay quite well in my head, and i can plan week to week just from that. though it would have been pretty interesting to have plotted a graph of my squat max going up 150 pounds in 10 weeks... lol.

thanks for that link, i checked out the site, and downloaded some samples. i cant really afford to purchase anything like that at this point in time, but with a personal collection of music that tops 4500 songs, i certainly could create my own workout compilations. my sound card came with stuff to mix and splice, just have to teach myself how to use it, and i could make some pretty interesting stuff on my own. im gonna have to take your advice and try it out.

Weight: 234.0

Most WLF'ers are too young to remember the cartoon strip "Peanuts". At the beginning of every football season, Lucy would entice Charlie Brown to kick the football from the place where she held it up for him. She'd let him get a good head of steam, and at the split second his foot should have contacted the ball, she'd snatch it away, whereupon he'd go ass over teakettle on the ground.

This is what the scale gods do to me. And, like Charlie Brown, I fall for it every time. At the beginning of a new plateau, they entice me with an absurdly low reading on the scale. I get all excited, talk about beating my goal for the month handily, think about eating some ice cream or cake, because I'm so far ahead. Then, two days later, BANG! I'm back to reality.

Still, though, the "reality" this time is around 234, not 237. I'm OK with that. I'm hip to the tricks of the scale gods and GOM, and I'm still going to win this battle, although it will probably take just as long as I thought it would when I first started - a little over 2 years.

Food yesterday was at 2,393 calories:
Fat: 90 gm, 34%; 27 gm saturated, 10%
Carbs: 209 gm, 29%; 43 gm fiber
Protein: 189 gm, 31%
Alcohol: 0

I made a great, healthy dinner last night: sauteed skinless chicken leg meat with a rub from the farmer's market; spinach cooked in a bit of chicken broth, with mango salsa and tomatoes; and lentils. I never realized what a good food lentils is - one serving =
calories: 120
fat: 0
sodium: 240 mg
carbs: 20 gm, 8 gm fiber
protein: 9 gm

Next time, though, I'm going to cook them in a bit of broth, with oniions and mushrooms. A great alternative to rice and pasta.

MMMM, lentils! Lentils are actually on my list of so-called "superfoods" I keep posted on my fridge as a reminder to eat at least twice a week....but totally forget week after week.

BTW: you wrote -"they entice me with an absurdly low reading on the scale. I get all excited, talk about beating my goal for the month handily, think about eating some ice cream or cake, because I'm so far ahead. Then, two days later, BANG! I'm back to reality." See, this is why the scale gods toy with you so mercilessly, they can read your mind and it amuses them. Next time think about grilled tofu and raw broccoli - make it less fun for them to snatch away the ball.,,LOL

I'm weak in the mind, I admit it. In fact, this morning at sunrise, since it is my off day, I took a casual 3 mile walk along the beach. Driving home, I passed by VG Donuts, absolutely the best donut place in San Diego County. I struggled to pass by it, but couldn't. I walked in, and there were 20 people in line. At that point, my impatience won out over my gluttony, and I left, 500 calories lighter.

Whew! That was a close one!

Good morning Tom...reading what you had for dinner has made me hungry this morning! I think it's time for breakfast!

What is up with the scales? Has to be water weight...ya know...my jumped a pound and then two more over the weekend, but then went back down the three pounds yesterday. But, of course I am still stuck where I have been since last Monday (May 7th).

I had to laugh outloud when I read your account of people who can read while working out...I'm 100% physically and mentally focused into my workout and busy breathing, taking a sip of water or wiping the sweat off my face before it runs into my eyes--who can read? Over the weekend, I got kind of lost in thought and inadvertently slowed my pace and almost slipped off the back of the treadmill! :D

Hope you are having a good day!

Hi, Beth. What really kills me are the people who not just read, but read large size newspapers. I guess the 100 calories an hour they're getting is better than nothing, though.

Are you kidding me? That's the kind of thing you mark as another milestone on your road to not just losing but keeping it off. And I am dead serious here. You wanted something tasty and fattening and alluring...you thought about getting it...had the means and opportunity - and decided against it because you felt in the moment that your time was more important to you than the food. Think about how many times in your past you would have placed more value on getting those donuts than your time....it would have felt "worth the wait" or once the idea was in your head "umm, donuts" would have stopped somewhere else along the way to satisfy that random want. I think that simple action was fanfriggintastic and I'll celebrate it for you!:hug2: :jump:

Haha, cym, you're right -- I was looking at the whole episode from a very negative point of view. Thanks for straightening me out on that. :)

Send the scale gods to me. I have enough of Lucys evil genius to make THEM fly in the air and land on their behinds. AND I have a bone to pick with them myself.
Congrats on defeating the donuts! One less food to tackle in the future. ;)

Thanks, Juliette. But take it from me, you won't want a visit from the scale gods without a proper supply of incense!
