Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

You really do work out hard Tom.

As you say, and I've seen others say, that deficit has to pay off eventually.

I hope this is the week! :)

Hey, curvie, Cannon, m2m, & felici -- thanks for stopping by! Yes, I hope this is the week, but I'm not anticipating it too much. I have a bad feeling that nothing's going to budge this month, and that after my trip to SF, I'll have to try something different with Coach Steve.
----------------------------------------------------

Weight: 243.2 - down from yesterday, day #33 of Plateau #2. BP & Pulse same.

Food yesterday: quality was 4/5. 2,307 calories, 39% fat (but only 5% saturated), 40% carbs (1/4 of that fiber), and 27% protein. For dinner, I made steamed broccoli, salmon, and a stir-fry with yams, mushrooms, and red peppers.

Slept good last night - no leg cramps!

Today is weights day, set "B". Kind of looking forward to it, actually.

Lots of work to do today -- in fact the next few months will be pretty hairy, as the pressure will be on for me to finish my project. So I'll spend some time on the net in the mornings, but make myself scarce the rest of the day.

YW Daise, glad to have you back. And of the 2 of us, only 1 knows what the hell he's talking about!

Morning Tom. :)

And I wouldn't say I know what I am talking about. Anyone who thinks this stuff (as in the science of the body and how it pertains to fitness) is easy is kidding themselves. I learn something new every single day. That is why I love it so much!!!

Well, you know a hell of a lot more than anyone else I've seen here, and anywhere else on the net.

Yeah, the more I read, the more I see all the unknowns. A lot of stuff follows easily identifiable patterns, but the exceptions drive you crazy.

Did you see Thibaudeau's article on losing fat at T-Nation?
Testosterone Nation - Destroying Fat: War Room Strategies to Maximize Fat Loss
Think I should give that a try after my vacation?

Good morning Tom, I'm off to check out that article you mentioned. Sounds intriguing! Have a great day, Rach

I did read Thibaudeau's article. I like a lot of his old stuff, books that are very hard to find nowadays. The article is good, he brings up a lot of the stuff I "preach" about. However, I wouldn't use this as your next alternative. I would work on nutrition before you start throwing in lactate inducing training. IMO, this really wouldn't make all that much of a difference and for some, I could even see this being too taxing systemically.

By "nutrition" you mean lowering the calories? Or changing the macros?

Should this wait until after my week off in SF, or should I start sooner?

Yeah, that day of doing weights + HIIT seemed pretty intense for an old fart like me!

Yes, I mean toying around with cals a bit. That week off in SF I would actually bump intake up to maintenance the entire time. Give your system a break. If the scale jumps up, so be it.

Then when you come back, probably slash cals a little. Certainly no surplus days except for an occassional cheat.

Workout Log - 3/20/2007

Full Body Weight Training, Part 2
51 min., 519 cal.

  • a) BB Back Squat, 1 x 5 @ 95 lb. [warmup]
  • b) BB Back Squat, 5 x 5 @ 175 lb. [Diff=2]
  • c) Incl. DB Bench Press, 5 x 5 @ 120 lb. [Diff=2+]
  • d) Deadlift, 1 x 5 @ 95 lb. [warmup]
  • e) Deadlift, 5 x 5 @ 175 lb. [Diff=2+]
  • f) BB Row, 5 x 5 @ 85 lb. [Diff=2]
  • g) Assisted Chinup, 5 x 5 @ level 17 [Diff=2]

Notes:
Felt stronger on the incline db press today - last time I barely made the last set.
Increased weight a bit on the deadlift. Will keep it the same next week.
Felt better on the chinups; will lower to level 16 next time.
Didn't do cardio after; I'm feeling 50 min. of weight training is enough!

It is enough!

The second Steve told me cardio before weights could work against me, I don't do cardio at all on weight days (mondays and thursdays). Well, I walk the dog to the beach at my lunch hour regardless. It's really nice not to have to worry about cardio--since I run or do HIIT the other 5 days of the week--still better than 70% of Americans.

WOW! 175lb deadlifts! You're realy in your late fifties?

Hope you drop weight soon--you really deserve to be in "onederland"

LOL, thanks Curvie. Yes, it is kind of nice to just do weights. And squats and deads on the same day is a killer.

My deadlifts, according to this site - Deadlift Standards --
are still in the "Untrained" [read weakling] category. I hope to be up to 200 lbs. by my 59th birthday this July.

"Onederland" -- now that would be a dream come true. At the rate of loss I'm going at now, I should be there by the time I'm 146 years old!

Some people use "LOL" but they don't really laugh out loud. I did! Loudly! I probably shoudn't but I did--you are funny

I did too!

NO - you're NOT going to be 146 old when you get there!

OK, you caught me -- I admit it, I was exaggerating. I just figured it out more accurately -- I'll be at my goal (at my current rate of loss) on July 5, 2016, just shy of my 68th birthday. ;)

I guess I have to change the name of my diary now to

Fit by 68! - TomO's Endless Journey

or plagiarizing from Steve's journal:

A Journey, Because I Forgot What the Destination Was

OMG - you definitely did make me laugh out loud!

Something tells me you and Steve are going to bust this plateau right out of here!

Weight: 243.8 - up from yesterday, day #34 of Plateau #2; BP & Pulse steady.

Food yesterday: 4/5 quality wise, 2,732 calories, 33% fat (9% saturated), 35% carbs, 26% protein. Calories expended came to 2,932, for a whopping deficit of 145 calories.

I had a creepy thought this morning. What if my metabolism is so screwy that my RMR is only about 1,800 calories? Now that would REALLY suck! That would mean that unless I exercise like a fiend the rest of my life, I'll gain weight. I sure hope that's not the case!

Watched "Work Out" on Bravo last night. Very amusing, and kind of everything that's wrong with the personal trainer industry. It started with Jackie having all her trainers for a "beach boot camp" where they all ran around in the hot sun while she cracked the whip. At one point, she got pissed at them because they went to get some water. Yeah -- that's a good message: hydration is for wimps. The focal point of her boot camp was for each trainer to contribute an exercise that everyone could use for all their clients to help them lose lots of weight. Lots of glute exercises, but nothing that looked particularly useful. Inside the gym, there are shots here and there of free weights, but no one ever uses them. It's machines all the way.

OK, OK, I know this is not really a show about fitness. It's just another reality show, with fitness as the backdrop. But still, it would be really cool to see a show like this propagate some useful knowledge at the same time.

Thanks daise, I have gotten pretty good at laughing at myself over the years! Of course having two teenagers helped a lot too. You can't take yourself too seriously if you go through that!
