Fighting the Apple

man, I didn't know that about tomatoes. Thats good to know, I love them too.

I'm with you on the changing tastes too. I do crave nasty stuff sometimes, but not like I did when I was eating it more often. I'm also right along with you on the booze...........but a man's gotta have a vice ;)

good work my man, keep it up!

What a great place to walk! And Woofy is adorable! My two little furry rat dogs stay home when I walk now, they just can't keep up ;)

You're doing a great job - keep it up!

(A fellow tomato lover)

Diary.

Up for work at 5:45 am.

Breakfast: All Bran cereal, almonds, small chopped banana, low fat yoghurt, semi skimmed milk and a glass of grapefruit juice. I love this breakfast at the moment!

Exercise: Warm ups, stretches, 38 crunches.

Off to work!

Lunch / Snacks: Two hard boiled organic eggs, two slices of wholemeal bread, apple, tomato, apricots, kiwi fruit, peach, plum, raw carrot batons.

Home at 7:30 pm.

Evening meal: Salad with a little chicken ham, plus baby spinach leaf, tomato, olives, sun dried tomatoes, radish, continental onion etc.

Exercise: Brisk dog walking for one and a half hours, along the riverside path that leads out into the forest - the style that Wolfy likes best - off leash! I included a run/jog session for about one mile. On the way back we watched a flock of over 80 geese swim along the little river almost single file.

Late evening: a very very good ferret - I kept off the wine totally and drank green tea ... and on a friday night too!

Diary.

Got up for a nice day off of work at 8:30 am ... bliss.

Breakfast: wholewheat porridge with almonds and low fat yoghurt. Plus an orange juice.

Exercise: Warm ups - stretches - 38 crunches.

Exercise: Run/jog with Wolfy through the forest - usual route of 2.5 miles. Another good run.

Went out with family for the day - plenty of walking, shopping etc. I bought some new jogging trousers (I don't like to wear short trousers in the forest because of the ticks and Lyme disease) - Its really nice to be able to feel comfortable going into a sports shop and buying stuff for myself.

Meal: Stopped at a cafe, had baked potato and baked beans - no butter. With a small side salad of lettuce and tomato. Diet coke.

Exercise: Walked one mile plus with Wolfy and daughter No.1 down to town centre etc. Snacked a little on dried apricots.

Evening meal: Salad with steamed cod fish, barbequed fillet of pork, corn on the cob, spinach leaves, carrot, wholemeal pasta and baked beans (low sugar/salt). Orange juice.

Hmmm ... thinking that I mught go out and buy a bottle of wine now?

Happy Birthday to me!

In the event, i was extremely well behaved last night - I only drank two glasses of the Californian red wine :) However, unusually, I did get the munchies which I took out on three small slices of wholemeal bread.

Red Bush Tea.

I was introduced to this herbal tea (its not from the tea plant) by a couple of colleagues who had both worked in power stations in Southern Africa. Its also known as Bush Tea, Red Tea, or Rooibos. Its claimed that like Green Tea (which is from the tea plant), it is rich in antioxidants - but unlike Green Tea, it is caffeine free and contains half of the tannins! If it is all true - looks to be healthier than even Green Tea!

Anyway, I found that it is available in tea bags in my local stores here in the UK, so I've bought some. I still like green Tea, but I also enjoy a cup of this Red Tea most days... Want to know more -Try Wikipedia for more information... Its a very nice refreshing cup of drink!

Diary.

Its my birthday!!!! 21 again!!! (ok, 44 :( ) Kids and the husky dragged me out of bed at 9 am...

Breakfast: Wholewheat muesli with low fat yoghurt. With a grapefruit juice.

Exercise: Warm ups - stretches - tai chi practise - 40 crunches.

I went to the local leisure centre for a gym induction - along with Mrs Ferret. Me - in a gym! I never thought that I would see the day - neither did many people who knew the old me. The package that we signed up for includes the gym, swimming pools, sauna, exercise classes, programmes, etc.

Lunch: A reduced fat peanut butter, raw carrot, and tomato sandwich - two small slices of wholemeal bread. An apple, and another tomato.

Exercise: dogwalked - here I tried out my new stepometer and my handheld GPS. We walked down to town and then along the river - two miles.

Exercise: Kids had gone out, so I decided to break the ice and try out my new gym membership. So many strange machines and devices - despite my induction - its all foreign to me. I started with the tread mill I was wearing my heart rate monitor and its great to see my heart in action. I ran for two miles in 20 minutes - much of it at 8 mph. I also tried a couple of weight machines (I would like a nicer body - I must admit), had a good bash at a rowing machine etc. All in all, spent around 80 minutes there working out hard. I think that I am going to be an addict.

I'm now sitting here having a nice glass of red wine. We are getting ready to go out for a family meal at a local Portuguese restaurant. Portuguese food does tend to be rather fattening - but what the heck - I've had a great day at the gym, and its my birthday!

I'll report on my dinner in tomorrows diary ... See you all :)

Update.

I had the Arroz de Marisco - seafood risotto - rice, mussels, crab, clams, shrimps etc... Very nice - plus copious amounts of Portuguese red wine, and uma bica...

A nice walk back - my 10 year old daughter challenged me to a race - and she had to cheat in order to win! Oh the times are changing...

Woo Hoo! Happy Birthday!!

It sounds like a GREAT day and the meal, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it :)

Enjoy your wine and tell that little race cheater, she's gonna have to try winning the honest way...if she CAN ;)

Have a great night and enjoy the rest of you 21st birthday (and with your math, I might still be 17
:)

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday, Dear ToothlessFerrett ;)
Happy Birthday to you!!

Good for you on going to the gym on your birthday! Enjoy that Portuguese food, you deserve it! :D

Happy Birthday!!!!

Wow - looking at your diary, we are very similar! Congrats on all the weight loss! Enjoy the gym - I'm a total Gym Rat!

Have a great day!

Happy belated birthday, TF!! :D Hang over, huh?! LOL gotta love 'em!

Rooibos tea is great! I drink a gallon of it myself! How did dinner go? :D

Weight loss is a pain in the back! Seriously! I have been suffering from a bad back for weeks - it has been ruining any feeling of new 'fitness'. So today I went to see an osteopath. She believes that the back pain was caused by my weight loss - my muscles and bones don't know yet how to handle the new shape and weights, and it hurts! Anyway, she thoroughly beat me up, jumped on me, thumped me etc, and seems quite confident that she can cure it...

Diary.

Got up 8 am. Working a night shift later.

Breakfast: High Fibre Bran with a chopped banana, almonds, and low fat yoghurt. Also a grapefruit juice.

Exercise: warm ups, stretches, tai chi, 40 crunches.

Exercise: Tai Chi Chuan lesson for one hour.

Lunch/snacks: Fresh fruit selection - apple, tomato, peach, apricot, and a honey sandwich in wholemeal bread. Green tea, Rooibus tea, dried apricots and prunes.

Exercise: Dog walking for one mile plus. Wolfy didn't seem all well - so I booked an appointment for him at the vets. He had a grass seed against his right ear drum and some infection. They had to sedate him in order to remove it - but he seems ok now - just a little groggy. Still, with sorting him out, I didn't have the time for swimming - it can wait.

Main meal: Salad - cod fish fillet, mixed leaves, tomato, radish, spring onion, grated raw beetroot and carrot, green lentils (canned), and some spinach stuffed pasta. Followed by usual low fat yoghurt with plant stenols.

Ok, I'm off for work now - unfortunately, I didn't get time for a pre-night shift sleep either - ah well...

that's really fascinating that weight loss would cause that - but i suppose our bodies compensate for the extra weight, and when it's gone.. it doest know what to do...

Hope you are feeling better soon

Oh back pain! That's the worst. I threw my back out awhile back and I thought I was going to die!

Feel better! I find cat stretch exercises helpful and also on tummy - superman pose helps strengthen.

Blood Test - Doctor' Orders!

Day starts in the middle of a nightshift at the power station.

Light meal: Canned green lentils with 3 slices of wholemeal bread. Fruit selection: apple, plum, apricot, grapes, kiwi fruit.

Rooibos tea at work and water.

Finished work 7:15 am, drove home, and hit the bed.

Wolfy woke me up early with his barking at Mrs Ferret having her lunch - got up at 1:30 pm.

Breakfast: Had to fast for blood test.

Exercise: Warm ups, stretches, tai chi practise, 40 crunches. I also received a Tae Bo DVD that I had ordered, in the post - I'll leave that until I get more time! It looks fun - but very challenging!

I have been trying to get a blood test done for several days - so took the opportunity and popped into the local cottage hospital.

The reason that I needed the blood test was by request by my doctor, who wants to check that my rapid weight loss is not down to an illness, rather than to my healthy living plan. I asked them to chuck in a cholestrol test at the same time - that sort of completes my new body road test. Heart rate and blood pressure have already been checked as excellent.

Late Breakfast Snack: a banana and a high fibre cereal bar.

Exercise: 1 hour 20 minutes working out in the gym. 25 minutes on the treadmill for 2.3 miles, peaked at 8.5 mph. Tried some weight machines (light weights only - 10 to 20 kilos) for my back and legs. Finished off with 6 minutes on a rowing machine.

Shopped. Snacked a little on Three Seed Mix. Had a purple grape juice.

Main meal: A big'un! Steamed tuna steak, steamed salmon steak, steamed vegetables (carrot, baby spinach, mange tout, mushroom), salad (radish, shredded beetroot, lettuce, tomato, red spring onion), some cold pasta, and low fat bio yogurt! Followed by a low fat fruit yogurt with reducol.

Exercise: Dog walking circa one mile.

Right, I'm off to work soon.... :(

Protein. I'm at a crossroads in my nutrition plan at the moment. I'm down to around 150 pounds - only maybe five pounds short of my 'target' weight. Thing is, I have always said that 'fitness' - including feeling and looking good, are more important to me than some target figure on a set of scales. I hated being fat and unhealthy - but neither do I want to be a 10 stone weakling.

I still have some 'residual' fat around my torso - but I have had that since I was a boy of around 10 years of age. I think that if I am going to finally lose that sticky flab, that doing it by exercise is a better way of doing it rather than by 'losing weight' by diet alone. I want to lose that flab AND replace it with more muscle - I'm doing more cardio now, especially on the treadmill - that should hopefully help me lose the flab - as well as increase my heart and respiratory health.. I now run/jog more - and I have joined a gym. I'm starting out on light weights, and a fitness instructor is giving me a program tomorrow.

In order to help me grow that muscle, I'm now increasing protein in my diet. Fish, chicken white meat, beef jerky, egg, pulses, and nuts are all on my target list. If it all goes horribly wrong, well, at least I tried - its a bit of an experiment. So - if I put on weight now - I don't mind - as long as its muscle and not fat this time!

Diary.

Starts in the middle of a night shift at work.

Light meal/snacks: low fat peanut butter sandwich, organic honey sandwich - total of four small slices of wholemeal bread. Fruit selection: apple, tomato, a plum. Green tea.

Finished work 7:30 am, did some quick shopping, and then went home to bed.

Had a nice sleep at last - got up to a beautiful sunny afternoon at 3:15 pm. I decided that following my sleep, that I would treat today as a rest and recovery day - no hard exercising, no crunches, gym, or jogging today!

Breakfast: Oat porridge with added almonds and low fat bio yoghurt. Washed down with a grapefruit juice.

Exercise: Static stretches - Tai Chi - no crunches. Rest Day!

Snack: Tablespoon of three seed mix, and the same of unsalted pistachio nuts. Green tea.

Exercise: Dog walking - walked Wolfy 2 miles. No running.

Main meal: Salad (mixed crispy leaves and raw baby spinach, radishes, cucumber, tomato, red spring onion), two hard boiled eggs, a little baked chicken breast, grilled aubergine slices (basted in olive oil and crushed garlic), mushroom and new potatoes. Followed by a low fat yoghurt with plant stenols - all delicious!

Off to work later tonight!
