Fasting

Hi
I am Ransy after I started working from home in 2001, I have gain weight about 31 lbs in the past 8 year. I also was active in trainings studio before I started working from home, at that time 3-4 times a week.
I am testing fasting right now; I have only been testing for less than a week and I intend to try this out for about 6-8 weeks. For many people this is a lifestyle. Regarding activity I have a dog (Goldie she is 6 months old) so I go out with her twice a day, which is working very well I really enjoy walking with her.
I believe fasting can be useful in a total health plan. Intermittent fasting is the practice of abstaining from all but water for a period of usually 24 hours, twice a week to help with the goals associated with fat loss and weight loss in general.
Fasting has been around since time immemorial, and many of the first references to it come from the Bible. They knew even back then the many and varied benefits one can derive from fasting, whether it is for short or longer periods of time. There are many examples from all religions that detail the benefits of fasting from a spiritual perspective, but there are also many other benefits to be realized from a health and wellness standpoint as well.

I keep you updated.

fasting in the biblical days was a sign of respect and honor to God. It was certainly not for weight loss.

good luck to ya, you'll need it.

Having spent a lot of time in Greece - I know a lot of people who fast according to the Greek Orthodox church. Fasting as it is understood in their religion is not a complete lack of eating as many people presume - but to eat a subset of a normal diet.

Quoting Constantine Cavarnos in Anchored in God he writes (pp. 29-30):

Fasting takes into account both the quantity and the quality of food. The idea is to eat a smaller amount of food during a fasting day; to abstain from fats and oils, as these tend to fatten the body and thereby to arouse lust and make one physically and spiritually lazy; to abstain from meat, fish, and products of animal origin, as these tend to excite carnal desire; and also to abstain from mere delicacies, as the consumption of these is a form of self-indulgence. St. John Climacus (c. 525-605) says: "Satiety of food is a begetter of unchastity." He also says, "Let us cut down fatty and greasy foods that inflame carnal desire, and foods that sweeten and tickle the larynx" (The Ladder, Migne PG 88, 864, 865).

People who refer to religious fasting as a historical basis connected to what they are doing should qualify whether or not they are referring to a similar type of fasting.

Many vegetarians get much protein without resorting to food of animal origin (as do many fasting Greeks). A short period of time on a fat free - no junk - vegetarian diet is totally different to life on water.

I am not fasting for some religious reasons because I am not a religious person. This is not something that I am recommending to anyone, this is something I am doing for myself. My Believe is that water fasting can detoxify cells and rejuvenate organs. I think we are all part of this community for the same reason and that is to lose weight, helping, shearing and supporting each other.

Well this isn't actually factual, but it's not really our place to tell you what to do. It's just that if information is to be given out on this site, it helps if it's accurate so that people can make their own informed decisions.

Good luck to you on your fast.

fasting is not good.

If you are trying to lose weight fasting is not good. You should be eating 5-6 small meals aday. Fasting will mess with your metabolism big time!!!!

If I didnt eat for a day at a time it would make me more preoccupied with the food that I was missing out on. I would run into danger of losing my control and might eat whatever came along. I am convinced that I would eat a whole lot healthier if I stuck to my normal eating routine.

Actually, neither of these is true either. :)

Absolutist statements are usually incorrect. There have been some *limited* (that's an important qualifier) studies that show types of intermittent fasting might have a positive effect on our bodies and our mental abilities. These studies absolutely reinforce that fasting is not a way to lose weight or "cleanse" the body. However fasting IN COMBINATION WITH a healthy eating plan and a healthy exercise plan might be beneficial in more ways than one.

As with any plan, you should research it from REPUTABLE sources and make up your own mind based on sound, logical, research - not advertisements and not blanket statements made by anyone on an Internet message board.

Anyone who can't back up a "factual" assertion with sources and documentation (again, from reputable sources) probably isn't worth listening to.

Use your brains and make decisions based on research and fact - not emotion and advertising.

Same here!

If you are referring to me that I should use me brain! I find your statement quit rude!

I have no idea who Kara was directing that statement to

... but...

There is nothing wrong with the concept that everyone on the forum should use their brain and evaluate everything that they read here...

A forum such as this is full of people with different opinions who have heard things / half remembered things and read something in a magazine. Such things are dished out time and time again as if it is a known fact - whether or not they are backed up by research.

We should all question the things that we read here and do our own research - going for the best authorities that we can find. We must all discern the wheat from the chaff - the facts from the old wives tales.

We owe it to ourselves to make our decisions based on fact - not someone else's fiction.

Really? You find being told to research something and be logical about it to be rude? Huh. We must have different ideas of rude.

AT any rate, Korrie is spot on. "I heard" or "I read" or "someone told me" is no way to manage your health and yet some people will do things that can affect their long term health w/out any more research or knowledge than a line from an Internet website.

It just blows my mind that people are so willing to use "I heard somewhere" as a reason for anything.
