evening tv snacking

I desperately want to quit the "in front of the tv" evening snacking (more like continuous grazing). I think I eat the majority of my calories between 7pm and 11pm! I just can't get a handle on this. I do really well during the day, I can make good choices and I can control my portions but in the pm, all heck breaks loose! It's like a compulsion that I have to fight if I try not to snack/eat in the pm. It's so strong it's distracting!

Does anyone else suffer with this? Has anyone beat this bad habit and if so, how?

Any and all suggestions welcome. THANK YOU.

if tv = snacking - maybe find something to replace the tv habit

board games , puzzles, a crafty type hobby that uses your hands, if you've got a family - maybe a family game night - charades, pictionary - if you're of age -- heck sex is a great replacement -e ven solo :D (hey - ya'll knew i was going to suggest it -I have a one track mind 'k? :D

or figure out how to work snacking into your daily calories - - portion out snacks and just have that portion

hmm i have this problem too.. lazing on the couch and watchin tv just makes me feel like eating and stuff lol.. im trying to keep away from junk food.. so even if i feel like eating i'll just grab a fruit or some nuts.. or else i'll just keep myself busy doing something, like read the papers while watching tv.. or do some stretching exercises.. if not drink water.. that will make you feel bloated and keep u from eating.. hope this helps!

Keep Busy :)

Evenings were my worse snack times too. I just plain avoid sitting in front of the TV during these times! I get home from work and play with my dog for a little bit, sit down relax, sometimes I'll have a snack like a banana or a protein bar, especially if I'm heading to the gym. The nights I go the gym by the time I get home and have dinner TV time is over :) I will go read, right in my journal, or nowadays I come here! I have to keep busy and over time I have quit thinking about that evening snacking.

Good Luck :)

How can you not want to eat in front of the tv? Every single commercial after seven pm is one for some restaraunt or another. And you really have to avoid the food channel at all costs. I have to tell you what I do. I found that the sugar free creamsicles made by popsicle have only 20 calories, low fat, and NO sugar! So that's my snack at night. Sometimes even two. 40 cals I can afford.

You mean like reading or painting or crocheting, right? :p
Ooooh, I'm hungry now. "Oh, hubby!":D

you know...I do recall watching a talk show on which a woman swore she lost tons of weight just by upping the frequency of sex between her and her husband (he was on the show with her and he never stopped smiling:D ). I got to admit, they both looked great.:)

I've started eating popcorn at night. I got some Healthy Choice popcorn, and it has only like 15 calories per cup. So I just eat popcorn and not feel guilty. It's tasty, it's crunchy, and very satisfying.

Yes--you are definitely not alone on this one.

Like others have suggested: find a substitute. However, instead of cutting out TV all together, you could try cutting out only the snacking part--instead of eating, you could lift weights or find a way to exercize while you watch.

Personally, I'm fortunate enough to live in a household that owns an eliptical machine. While I work out on it, I usually watch the tube. I find that both go hand-in-hand: I'm too busy to snack, and watching "Frasier" just takes my mind off of how hard I'm working :)

I have a little stepper machiene that I use while watching TV sometimes, though my boyfriend hates it cuz its a cheap one so it squeaks and creaks like anything :D Also if I get the munchies il have a big glass of diet pepsi or water, just seems to take my mind off it some how... Or strawberries, theyre a nice snack too.

I continue eating small portions into the evening: a low cal yoghurt pot, almonds, walnuts, seeds, a cup of low fat cottage cheese - typically I like some proteins or good fats at this time of the day, but I don't think that it really matters what you eat then. When I'm maintaining weight rather than trying to lose weight, I very often have a big bowl of a mixture of nuts, berries, seeds, or raisins covered with plain low fat yoghurt Mmmm... I think that low fat yoghurt has become my ice cream substitute - but a much healthier one!
