elliptical or treadmill?

I am gonna purchase a cardio machine for at home while I am doing my school, because I never have time to go to the gym thanks to full time work and full time school so i know if i had one at home i would do it while watching my class videos. So.... i am stuck between a treadmill or an elliptical??? or course I want theone that will burn the most calories so what do you guys think? which one is better?

Some random opinions..
Ellipticals will take the shock off the knees.
Some threads would say treadmill brings muscle while ellipticals are for cardio which I don't know why?

We used to have lifefitness ellipticals in our gym which used to overestimate the calories burned by as much as 25%. Now they have got the new model 95xi on which I feel it takes similar efforts to burn as many calories as running. So calibration matters for one.

i prefer the elipticals aswell also for my knees and i find it easier to do longer on them if that makes sense :)

Just my opinions, and you may have different ones.
Ellipticals - If your older and your bones aren't the best, then this is probably for you. You don't have any shock as mentioned, and it's easier on your bones, but the muscles and cardio system basically get the same workout.
Tredmills - More freedom. You can improve your form faster. It works your cardio system a little more since you don't have the elliptical pedals holding you up.

I sweat on the elliptical but not on the treadmill(3.9 speed).

Somehow, I don't consider "walking" as an excercise and I walk an hr a day during my lunch hour.

My vote is on the elliptical as well... Mostly because I'm a big guy and doing any kind of jogging / running on a tredmill means a whole bunch of noise. So I avoid them and just go for the ellipticals =-). Plus I find them a lot more fun, I never get bored on them for some reason.

personally..Ive given up on the eliptical .. it's sooo not motivating. Ive always had a special aversion for it lol I like the treadmil though because you can do a lot of things on it and if you have a tv near you..it's just perfect..oh I guess is nice to have an eliptical plus tv but I still prefer the treadmil, its more fun. If you join fun to exercise you get motivated

By cheap second hand and get both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is nothing better for a home gym than having 2 cardio machines.

1) you'll find your fave so next time you buy you'll know what to get.
2) you can keep changing over every 5mins for interval training.
3) you can workout with friends or family for motivation.

Dont worry bout all the crap on the screens. It dont matter if its broken. Dont aim for distances if your looking to get fit, as you'll only run slowly or stop when you get to your goal.

Buy a pulse watch, and aim to keep you heart rate at 60% ur max rpm for 4mins, drop to 40% for 5mins. Then 70% for 5mins...
you get the idea, just randomise your self a workout plan and stick to it.
